Siguiendo con la idea de llevar a cabo actividades recreativas en el espacio público, hemos transformado un poco nuestra instalación Pescando en Luz para seguir divirtiendo a la gente aprovechando uno de los objetos más común en nuestro paisaje urbano cotidiano.

Con el proyecto, Espacios de agua para pesca urbana, queremos convertir esos rudimentarios contenedores de escombros que tanto nos gustan y que ya hemos utilizado en anteriores ocasiones, en pequeños lagos iluminados, en los que poder pescar y pasar una divertida noche de fiesta y deporte comunitario.

La pesca estará asegurada y todo el mundo podrá llevarse lo pescado a sus casas.

Una instalación fácil de llevar a cabo, que esperamos pronto podamos hacer realidad.

In keeping with the idea of conducting recreational activities in public spaces, we have transformed our Fishing in Light installation a little to continue entertaining the people by taking advantage of one of the most common objects in our daily urban landscape.

With the project, Water spaces for urban fishing, we want to convert these rudimentary containers of rubble that we like so much and that we have used on previous occasions, into illuminated, little lakes, in which people can fish and spend a fun night of celebration and community sport.

The fishing will be guaranteed and everyone can take their catch home with them.

An easy installation to carry out, which we hope will soon be able to make reality.

Canalizaciones de luz fue la segunda instalación que creamos para dar un poco de calor a las heladas noches de Moscú y que finalmente tampoco pudimos llevar a cabo.

Empleando tubos de plástico corrugado de los que se usan para las canalizaciones urbanas, iluminados por dentro, conseguiríamos largas tiras amarillas con las que  jugar a construir pequeños y cálidos refugios en los que pasar tiempo resguardados.

Nos gustan mucho este tipo de tubos,  que siempre vemos en grandes montones, perfectamente ordenados en las aceras de las ciudades, y que dan un toque de animado color al gris asfalto.

Siempre hemos pensado que dan ganas de ponerse a trepar y deslizarse por ellos, como si de juegos de de un parque infantil se tratara, y realmente si se sujetan unos a otros con grandes bridas y si se fijan con enganches al suelo, podrían funcionar perfectamente como elementos de construcciones efímeras en manos de niños y no tan niños.

Light tubes was the second installation we created to inject a bit of heat into the freezing nights in Moscow, which, in the end, we could not carry out.

Using the corrugated plastic tubes that are used for the sewer system, illuminated from the inside, we would achieve long yellow strips with which to play and build small, warm shelters in which to spend some time protected.

We like these kind of tubes very much, which we always see in large piles, perfectly arranged on the sidewalks of the cities, and which bring a touch of lively color to the gray asphalt.

We have always thought that they make one want to climb them and slide down them, as if they were part of a children’s playground, and really if you attach them together with big flanges and if yothey are fixed to the ground, they could function perfectly as ephemeral construction elements in the hands of small and not so small children.

Estos son algunos proyectos de lámparas que hemos diseñado para iluminaciones públicas y urbanas de bajo coste.

El la luminaria creada con bolsas de plástico, es una pieza adaptada, basada en trabajos previos que hemos llevado a cabo, usando bolsas recicladas.

La pieza de los escurridores con luz, nos sirvió para plantear una instalación en Moscú, en la que queríamos llevar rayos de son y luz al frío y nevado espacio público cercano a la Facultad de Arquitectura. Finalmente no se pudo llevar a cabo.

Cualquiera de estas piezas se pueden construir con mínimos conocimientos de electricidad, además aguantan bien la intemperie. Esperamos poder materializarlas pronto.

These are some lamp projects that we have designed for low-cost, urban and public lighting.

The luminary created with plastic bags, is an adapted piece, based on previous projects we have carried out, using recycled bags.

The strainers with light piece helped us to create a installation in Moscow, in which we wanted to take rays of sun and light to the cold and snowy public space close to the Faculty of Architecture. In the end it could not be carried out.

Any of these pieces can be done with a minimal knowledge of electricity, and also withstand the weather well. We hope to be able to carry them out soon.

Habitando Fuentes es otro de los proyecto que teníamos guardado y que ahora queremos compartir, hasta que llegue el momento de llevarlo a cabo.

Nos gustan las fuentes en la ciudad, estar cerca de ellas nos produce bienestar y sosiego y ayuda algo a sobrevivir en la ajetreada vida diaria. Suelen estar situadas en espacios privilegiados, a su alrededor abunda la vegetación ornamental y al estar ubicadas en zonas de atracción turística, no se escatima en su cuidado.

A pesar de que la gente se para a contemplarlas, la mayoría de las veces no son realmente usadas por los ciudadanos ya que suele haber barreras arquitectónicas que las protegen.

Nosotros pensamos que quizás en su interior se escondan puertas secretas a mundos desconocido y sorprendente y nos proponemos habitarde manera efímera el fondo de una fuente, transportando la vida cotidiana al interior de sus quietas aguas.

Para ello, dejaremos flotando puertas semiabiertas por las que el sonido y la luz del hogar se escapen, imaginando que en su interior, la vida transcurre normalmente.

El sonido ambiente, habrá sido grabado en el interior de casas de la zona, con ruidos de puertas que se abren, sonidos de televisión, música, conversaciones, cubiertos en la mesa… actos cotidianos que todos llevamos a cabo en nuestro hogar. Pediremos la colaboración de vecinos para que nos dejen grabar sus vidas cotidianas y trasladarlas dentro de la fuente.

Inhabiting fountains is another project we had saved and now we want to share, until the time comes to carry it out.

We like fountains in the city, to be close to them produces a feeling of well-being, tranquility, helping in some way to survive the busy daily life.

Often, they are located in priveleged spaces, abundantly surrounded by ornamental vegetation and located in areas which are attractive to tourists, their care not lacking.

In spite of the fact that people stop to contemplate them, the majority of the time they are not really used by the citizens, given that they usually have architectural barriers protecting them.

We think, that maybe in their interiors, they hide secret doors to unknown and surprising worlds, of exemplary town planning, impossible to find in other spaces in the city and we propose to inhabit, in an ephemeral way, the depths of a fountain, transporting the daily lives of families to the interior of its quiet waters.

For this purpose, we will float partially opened doors, through which the sound and light of the homes will escape, imagining that in its interior, life goes on normally.

There will also be ambient sound, which will have been recorded inside homes with the sound of opening doors, television sounds, músic, conversations, cutlery on the table… daily acts which all of us carry out in our homes. We will ask the cooperation of neighbors to let us recording their daily lives and transfer them into the fountain.

La instalación Unidos por luz, fue pensada como parte de la iluminación artística de un colegio. La verdad es que nos hacía mucha ilusión estar presentes en un espacio donde iban a jugar todos los días niños, pero finalmente no la pudimos llevar a cabo, y hemos querido dejarla aquí archivada, entre nuestros proyectos aun sin hacer, por si algún día tenemos la oportunidad de materializarla.

De la primera versión de esta pieza, pensada para colocarse en un edificio, hemos evolucionado la idea con el fin de poder llevarla a cabo en la vía pública, que es lo que más nos apetece, convirtiendo el techado de babis infantiles, en largas tira de camisas largar, anudadas por las mangas, que podrían formar un tendido de ropa con luz, a lo largo de toda una calle.

Ojalá a alguien le guste y podamos llevarla a cabo pronto. Sería una metafórica manera de visualizar que en estos momentos algo oscuros, debemos estar más unidos que nunca contra los que quieren separarnos, con la insana intención de vencernos…

The installation, United by light, was conceived as part of the artistic lighting of a school. The truth is that we were very much looking forward to being present in a space where children were going to play all day, but in the end we weren’t able to do it, and we wanted to leave it archived here, among our incomplete projects, just in case some day we have the opportunity to make this a reality.

Since the first version of this piece, which was intended to be placed inside a building, the idea has evolved so that it could be installed in a public street, which is what we would like most, converting the roof made up of children’s smocks into long strings of long-sleeved shirts with the sleeves tied together, which could form a clothesline with lights, along the whole street.

Hopefully someone will like it and we can carry it out soon. It would be a metaphorical way of visualizing that in these dark times, we must be more united than ever against those who want to separate us, with the insane intention of defeating us…

Aprovechando la visita del Comité Olímpico Internacional a Madrid, para evaluar la “situación” de nuestra ciudad como candidata a organizar los Juegos del 2020, nos echamos a la calle con nuestras luces, para manifestar nuestro rechazo a convertirnos en sede de este evento de la vergüenza, que no sólo no va a reportar ningún beneficio económico a los ciudadanos, (sí a los empresarios del ladrillo), sino que además va a provocar que nos hundamos un poco más en el abismo del déficit presupuestario que ya está concluyendo en preocupantes recortes en cultura, sanidad, educación…

Para llevar a cabo la protesta, nos dirigimos a un bien conocido parque, abandonado durante su construcción, y que amenazan con reconvertir en equipamiento olímpico quitándoselo a los vecinos, y que seguro, una vez terminado el evento, languidecerá como el resto de  infraestructuras ya construidas, que ahora se encuentran infrautilizadas, por no decir abandonadas.

Durante un mes, estuvimos recopilando botellas de cristal, recicladas de bares próximos a nuestras casas, hasta conseguir unas 500 unidades que limpiamos de etiquetas y preparamos cuidadosamente, con la intención de darles el aspecto de amenazadores cócteles molotov.

Nuestra instalación “Juegos Olímpicos como estrategia de destrucción” se instaló la noche del 18 de marzo, y consistió en la creación de los 5 aros, de 2 metros de diámetro, dibujados con botellas/cócteles, en las que el combustible se sustituyó por agua coloreada y la mecha prendió, no con peligroso fuego, sino con cálida luz led.

Y ahí dejamos la pieza, con la intención de que la visita olímpica se topara con ella a lo largo de su recorrido de inspección. No estamos seguros si lo conseguimos pero a los pocos días fuimos a comprobar si aún seguía para retirarla, y ya no quedaba rastro de ella…

Nos preguntamos si nuestros dirigentes se habrán parado a pensar que con todos los sacrificios presupuestarios que estaremos obligados a asumir para cubrir las exigencias del COI, probablemente tendremos costosas infraestructuras, pero no habrá deportistas capacitados para competir en ellas, ya que las futuras generaciones no tendrán ni una educación específica, ni salud, ni dinero, para prepararse o habrán tenido que marcharse fuera de España, para poder desarrollarse como profesionales de élite…

Ojalá este megalómano evento finalmente no tenga lugar en nuestra querida ciudad.

Gracias a nuestros amigos de La Selva, Bufalino, Passenger, Mezklum, Hawai, Portomarín, por guardarnos sus botellas, y a Liévana y Alex que estuvieron ayudándonos durante la complicada instalación, en la que además de pasar un mes preparando el material, nos obligó a permanecer 6 horas a la intemperie, en una fría y húmeda noche del mes de marzo.

Taking advantage of the  International Olympic Commitee visit to Madrid, to evaluate the “situation” of our city as a candidate to organize the 2020 Games, we went out into the street with our lights, to demonstrate our opposition to becoming the headquarters of these event of shame, that not only are not going to bring about any economic benefit to the citizens, (except for the construction industry), but are also going to cause us to sink a little further into the abyss of the budget deficit that is already causing worrying cuts in culture, health, education…

To carry out the protest, we headed to a well known park, abandoned during its construction, and that they are proposing to reconvert into an Olympic site taking it away from the citizens, and which will surely, once the event has finished, will languish like the rest of the already constructed infrastructure, which is now underused, so as not to say abandoned..

For a month, we collected glass bottles, recycled from bars close to our houses, until we had about 500 units which we cleaned of labels and carefully prepared, with the intention of giving them the appearance of menacing Molotov cocktails.

Our installation “Olympic Games as a strategy for destruction” was carried out on the night of March 18th, and consisted of the creation of the 5 rings, 2 meters in diameter, made up of bottles/cocktails, in which the fuel was replaced with colored water and the wick burned, not with dangerous fire, but with the warm light of an LED.

And there we left the piece, with the intention that the Olympic visitors would come across it during their inspection tour. We are not sure if we achieved it but after a few days we went to see if it still remained in order to remove it, and there was no sign of it…

We ask ourselves if our leaders have stopped to think that with all the budget sacrifices that we are forced to accept in order to meet the demands of the IOC, we will probably have expensive infrastructure, but there won’tl be any athletes capable of competing in them as the future generations won’t have the specific education, or health, or money, to prepare themselves or would have had to leave Spain, so that they can develop as elite professionals…

Hopefully, in the end, this megalomaniac event does not take place in our beloved city.

Thanks to our friends from La Selva, Bufalino, Passenger, Mezklum, Hawai, Portomarín, for saving us their bottles, and to Liévana and Alex who helped us during the complicated installation, in which in addition to spending a month preparing the material, we were forced to be out in the open for 6 hours, on a cold and wet night in the month of March..

Añorando el buen tiempo que no acaba de llegar a Madrid, nos han entrado ganas de revisar y llevar a cabo uno de nuestros proyectos favoritos y que por distintas circunstancias aun no hemos podido materializar… pero que de este año no pasa…

Se llama Pescando en luz y lo ideamos para el jardín del Victoria & Albert Museum de Londres. Finalmente llevamos a cabo otra pieza Sombras de Museo, bastante más truculenta y acorde con los sentimientos contradictorios que sentimos al estar en un espacio tan mítico, pero tan fuera de nuestro contexto natural.

Así contamos, hace ya mucho tiempo, la idea:
“El proyecto Pescando en luz quiere convertir un espacio al aire libre en un lugar mágico y misterioso, en el que los visitantes puedan pescar de noche, rodeados de reflejos de luz y brillantes colores de plástico.Para ello, se colgarán unos 200 objetos de plástico de uso doméstico de muy variadas formas y con llamativos colores, que llenaremos de agua e iluminaremos desde abajo y desde el interior para que la luz envuelva y traspase los recipientes, convirtiendo el espacio en un mundo de destellos de colores creados con recipientes y agua.Dentro de los recipientes, colocaremos pequeños juguetes de cuerda que nadarán sobre el agua, agitándola de manera que las ondas de agua iluminada, proyecten en el recinto, haces de luz que se vibran suavemente, al compás del movimiento de los juguetes.
Para interactuar con los transeúntes, se repartirán pequeñas cañas de juguete con los que podrán pescar los objetos que flotan en el agua”.

Ahora, queremos revisar el proyecto y sacarlo al espacio público y hacer de él una pieza participativa, en la que los vecinos nos presten sus recipientes de plástico de colores de uso cotidiano, y que nosotros se los llenaremos de luz y de pececitos para recrear un lago nocturno, multicolor e iluminado.

Nos gustaría llevarla a cabo en la plaza de algún pueblo o en un barrio popular de una gran ciudad, con la idea de que niños y mayores disfruten de una noche de pesca comunitaria.

Al terminar la noche, cada recipiente, retornará a su dueño y a su casa, pero ahora será mágico, porque llevará una luz en su interior y por supuesto, todo lo pescado.

Longing for the good times which have not come to Madrid, we have the desire to revise and carry out one of our favorite projects which for different circumstances we have not been able to perform… but that will not happen this year…

It is called Fishing in light and we designed it for the garden in the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. In the end we did another piece called Museum Shadows, Rather more truculent and in line with the mixed feelings that we had about being in such a mythical place, but so out of our natural context.

This is how we explained the idea so long ago:
“The project Fishing in light is designed to convert an outdoor space into a mysterious and magical place, in which visitors can fish at night, surrounded by reflections of  light and bright colored  plastic. To do this, about 200 domestic use plastic objects in a variety of forms and striking colors will be  hung, that we will fill with water and iluminate from below and from inside so that the light fills and passes through the containers, converting the space into a world of flashes of colors created by containers and water. Within the containers, we will place small mechanical toys that will swim on the water, moving it in such a way that the illuminated waves of water will  project gently vibrating beams of light into the compound, to the rhythm of the movement of the toys.
Tomake it interactive for those who pass by, small toy fishing poles will be distributed with which they can fish for the objects floating in the water”.

Now, we want to revise the project and bring it to the public space as a participative piece, in which the neighbors lend us their colored, everyday use plastic containers, which we will fill with light and small fish to recreate a multicolored and illuminated nocturnal lake.

We would like to carry it out in the plaza of a town or in a popular neighborhood in a big city, with the idea that children and adults can enjoy a night of community fishing.

At the end of the night, each container, will be returned to its owner and its home, but now it will be magical, because it will have a light in its interior and of course, all the fish.

25 Minutes of protest in the smoke from luzinterruptus on Vimeo.

La noche del 31 de enero nos lanzamos a la calle para “perpetrar” una intervención que llevábamos tiempo queriendo hacer y que esa noche tenía más sentido que nunca.

A esas horas, la gente se había echado a la calle de manera espontánea, para protestar contra la escandalosa corrupción política que había sido destapada por un periódico nacional y que implicaba, con nombres y apellidos, a toda la cúpula del gobierno español.

Mientras las fuerzas vivas andaban entretenidas, intentando “controlar” el orden público en la sede del PP de Madrid, nosotros elegimos una calle céntrica, próxima a la Gran Vía, y allí llevamos a cabo nuestra intervención lumínico/sonora, 25 minutos de protesta entre la niebla.

La acción fue muy sencilla, sólo unas pequeñas bombas de humo caseras, totalmente inofensivas, que colocamos bajo 9 potentísimas farolas, para conseguir que la calle mejor iluminada de la zona, se opacara totalmente, bajo una espesa niebla.

Esta ambientación, propia de una zona post conflicto o de una iglesia en horas de oración, invitaba a quedarse rato observando cómo el humo materializaba los haces de luz de las farolas, dibujando conos imperfectos en el espacio, dentro de los cuales, la niebla evolucionaba en hipnóticos movimientos.

Para mejorar la puesta en escena, el humo logró activar todas las alarmas anti incendios de la Gran Vía que sonaron durante largo rato, contribuyendo de manera perceptible, al malestar general que reinaba en las calles en ese momento.

Y la neblina se expandió por el aire, provocando que toda la zona acabara cubierta de una capa blanquecina que producía en el ánimo, una sensación de pesadez y tristeza, además de extrañeza, ya que el humo y el sonido de las alarmas, no iba acompañado de fuego ni olor a quemado.

Esta pieza nos ha servido además, para ratificarnos en nuestra idea de lo necesario que es para la contaminación de Madrid, una iluminación más tenue y sostenible, en la que la claridad perpetua, deje paso a la noche con sus sombras.

Gracias a nuestros amigos Cris, Alex y Aretha, que nos ayudaron a que todo se desarrollara a gran velocidad.

The night of January 31 we took to the street to “perpetrate” an intervention that we’ve wanted to carry out for some time and that night it made more sense than ever.

At that time, people had taken to the streets in a spontaneous manner, to protest against the scandalous political corruption that had been uncovered by a national newspaper and which implicated, with names and surnames, the entire leadership of the Spanish government.

While the powers that be were entertained, trying to “control” public order at the headquarters of the PP of Madrid, we chose a central street, close to Gran Via, and there we carried out our light/sound, 25 Minutes of protest in the smoke.

The action was very simple, only a few completely harmless, small, homemade smoke bombs that are placed under 9 powerful lampposts, in order to totally obscure the most illuminated street in the area, under a dense cloud of smoke.

This environment, belonging to a post-conflict zone or of a church during the hours of mass, was inviting to stay and watch as the smoke materialized the beams of light from the lampposts, forming imperfect cones in space, within which the smoke evolved in hypnotic movements.

To improve the scene being staged, the smoke managed to activate all the fire alarms on Gran Via which rang for a long time, contributing significantly to the general malaise that reigned on the streets at that time.

And the smoke carried through the air, causing the entire area to eventually be covered with a whitish layer that produced a feeling of heaviness and sadness, as well as being very strange because the smoke and the sound of the alarms were not accompanied either by fire or a burning smell.

This piece also served, in addition, to ratify for us our idea of just how necessary a softer, more sustainable lighting is for the contamination in Madrid, , which brilliance perpetuates, lets the night pass with its shadows.

El pasado mes de septiembre estuvimos en Caracas invitados por la Embajada Española para trabajar en Por en Medio de la Calle, un festival urbano que celebra cada año la importancia del espacio público como lugar de convivencia ciudadana y que tuvo lugar el 1 de septiembre en el barrio de Chacao en Caracas.

Como es habitual, al plantearnos la instalación, intentamos introducir una pequeña reflexión sobre algún tema que nos preocupa, en este caso no iba a ser menos, y elegimos el agua, uno de nuestros asuntos recurrentes.

Con la pieza Río Portátil, quisimos acercar un río de agua al centro de Caracas, para lo que tuvimos que envasarla y dejarla en reposo, cosa bastante inusual ya que allí, lo que normal es verla desbordarse por las calles cada vez que llueve. Nosotros queríamos pararla por una noche para que la gente pudiera sentarse a contemplar su belleza y quizás, a pensar en el valor de este elemento esencial para la vida y el reto que supone acercarla a los ciudadanos, sobre todo en las grandes urbes.

Para conseguir nuestro río urbano, creamos un particular caudal de agua cristalina empaquetada en 2.000 bolsas transparentes, en cuyo interior, además de luz, incluimos muestras de la vida que en ella habita. Cada bolsa era un pequeño acuario efímero, contenedor de peces y plantas, que gracias a la luz adquiría un valor insospechado.

Al final de la noche, los transeúntes podrán llevarse nuestros pequeños ecosistemas iluminados, convirtiendo el río quieto, en otro que rápidamente circuló por la ciudad, en la mano de los niños y adultos que quisieron llevarlos a sus casas. Otra parte del río se desbordó, para nuestra sorpresa…

Esta pieza no hubiera sido posible sin la ayuda de muchos amigos: nuestros increíbles voluntarios y el Taller de Bicicletas, que estuvieron trabajando y recolectando hierbas con total entrega durante 4 días, para conseguir llenar las bolsas; por supuesto, las queridas María José y Anna, de la Embajada que nos trataron como si estuviéramos en casa y nos ayudaron en todo y mucho más, los organizadores del evento Cultura Cachao y Platanoverde que nos acogieron y ayudaron en la producción con la mayor profesionalidad, también los señores de la cisterna de agua que colaboraron desinteresadamente, y a la gente de la calle que, de manera espontánea, se ofreció para poder terminar en el menor tiempo. A todos queremos darles un millón de gracias.

Ahora, al repasar las fotos de esta instalación y ver el agua dentro de las bolsas, a modo de sacas de dinero, no podemos dejar de pensar en cómo algunos gobiernos trafican con este vital elemento, ofreciéndolo al mejor postor…

Last September we were in Caracas invited by the Spanish Embassy to work on In the Middle of the Street , an urban festival that each year celebrates the importance of public space as a place of peaceful coexistence and took place on the 1st of September in the Chacao neighborhood in Caracas.

As usual, as we thought about the installation, we tried to introduce a little reflection regarding an issue which concerns us, in this case we weren’t going to do any less, and we chose water, one of our recurring themes.

With the piece, Portable River, we wanted to bring a river of water to the center of Caracas, for which we had to package it and lay it at rest, quite an unusual thing, because there it is normal to see it overflowing the streets every time it rains. We wanted to stop it for one night so that people could sit down and admire its beauty and perhaps, think about the value of this element, essential to life and the challenge presented in bringing it closer to the citizens, especially in the big cities.

To achieve our urban river, we created our own flow of crystal clear water packaged in 2,000 transparent bags, inside of which, in addition to light, we included samples of the life that dwells in it. Each bag was a small, ephemeral aquarium, a container of fish and plants, which, thanks to the light acquired an unsuspected value.

At the end of the night, the bystanders could carry away our small, illuminated ecosystems, converting the still river, into another that quickly circulated around the city, in the hands of children and adults who wanted to take them to their homes. Another example of the river overflowing, to our surprise…

This piece would not have been possible without the help of many friends: our incredible volunteers and the  Bicycle Workshop, who were working and collecting plants with total dedication for 4 days, in order to be able to fill the bags; of course, dear María José and Anna, from the Embassy who treated us as if we were at home and helped us with everything and so much more, the organizers of the event Cachao Culture and Green Banana who hosted us and helped with the production very professionally and also the gentlemen from the water storage tank that collaborated selflessly, and to the people on the street that spontaneously offered to help so we could finish in the shortest possible time. We want is to give a million thanks to all of them.

Now, looking at the photos of this installation and seeing the water inside the bags, as if it were sacks of money, we cannot stop thinking about how some governments traffic in this vital element, offering it to the highest bidder…
