By the light of the peppers / A la luz del peperone

El pasado septiembre estuvimos en Rosarno un pueblo de Calabria, en el que se celebra un festival de regeneración urbana llamado A di Città en el que gran número de impresionantes artistas, muchos de ellos buenos amigos, se reunieron con el propósito de intervenir artísticamente en un entorno urbano deteriorado, con la complicidad y ayuda de vecinos y de la administración.

Allí fuimos, con la idea de iluminar algún elemento familiar en el entorno y convertirlo en otro, con el que crear un entorno festivo, que poder compartir.

Elegimos el pimiento, hortaliza que se cultivan en la zona y que desde tiempos remotos se pueden encontrar en todos los balcones del pueblo, secando al sol.

Para llevar a cabo nuestra Peperonata Nocturna empleamos 2.000 preciosos pimientos, de color amarillo y rojo, traídos de huertas cercanas, a los que añadimos luz y colgamos de un tendido de cuerdas, formando un colorista toldo natural.

Durante 5 días preparamos los pimientos, añadimos las luces y los cosimos al tendido, formando guirnaldas que durante 3 días iban a iluminar un espacio en decadencia, bajo la noche de Rosarno.

Fue un laborioso trabajo, para el que contamos con la ayuda de muchos vecinos, visitantes del festival, y los propios artistas participantes, que se unían de manera espontánea, en torno a cajas de pimientos que al caer la noche teñían el espacio de trabajo de una íntima luz roja, que invitaba a las confidencias.

La última noche, ya con los pimientos colgados, se celebró una cena bajo la instalación, para todos los participantes en el festival. El menú, deliciosa pasta a la «peperonata» elaborada con los pimientos sobrantes, vino, pan y queso… qué más se puede pedir.

Las viandas, por supuesto, no las elaboramos nosotros, fueron cocinadas por algunas vecinas y amigos de la organización, nosotros… nos limitamos a comer hasta reventar…

Al día siguiente nos fuimos, dejando la instalación luciendo, para todos los que aun no habían tenido la oportunidad de acercarse a verla.

Queremos agradecer el esfuerzo que hizo la organización del festival para que estuviéramos allí, Angelo, Humberto, Giovanni… a los vecinos que nos prestaron sus casas y nos ayudaron a llevarla a cabo, a la encantadora familia que nos agasajó con una auténtica comida típica, a base de peporoni, a la gente del ayuntamiento que nos dio mas que apoyo logístico… a otros participantes en el festival que en algún momento pasaron por las cajas de pimientos a poner luces, y especialmente a SpY, The Wa, BR1, Elfo, Guildor, que nos echaron una mano, incluso dejando de hacer sus propias piezas, para que la nuestra saliera adelante.

Una última mención para Gianni, un personaje muy especial, que además de solventarnos todo tipo de problemas logísticos y echarnos una mano con las labores más rutinarias, nos dio cobertura emocional y nos enseñó lo que es la verdadera hospitalidad calabresa

Last September we were in Rosarno a town in Calabria, where they were celebrating a festival of urban regeneration called A di Città in which a great number of impressive artists, many of them good friends, met with the intention of intervening artistically in a deteriorated urban environment, with the complicity and the help of the residents and the administration.

We went there, with the idea of illuminating some familiar element of the environment and converting it into something else, to create a festive environment, to be able to share.

We chose the pepper, a vegetable grown in the area and which since ancient times can be found on all the balconies of the people, drying in the sun.

To carry out our Nocturnal Peperonata we used 2,000 precious yellow and red peppers, brought from nearby fields, to which we added lights and hung on ropes, forming a colorful natural canopy..

For 5 days we prepared the peppers, adding lights and sewing them onto the ropes, forming garlands that were going to illuminate a decadent space for 3 days, during the night in Rosarno.

It was laborious work, for which we had the help of many residents, visitors to the festival, and the participating artists, who came together in a spontaneous manner, surrounded by boxes of peppers, which with nightfall, the workspace had an intimate red light, inviting confidence.

On the last night, with the peppers already hung, there was a dinner under the installation, for all the participants of the festival. On the menu, delicious “peperonata” pasta made with the leftover peppers, wine, bread and cheese… what more can one ask for.

The food, of course, was not made by us, but was cooked by some residents and friends of the organization, ourselves… we limited to eating until bursting…

The next day we left, leaving the installation shining, for all those who had not yet had the opportunity to get close enough to see it.

We want to say thank you for the effort that the organization of the festival made for so that we could be there, Angelo, Humberto, Giovanni… to the residents who lent us their houses and helped us to carry it out, to the lovely family that entertained us with a genuine, typical meal, based on peporoni, to the people of the city that gave us more than logistical support…to the other participants in the festival, who passed by the boxes of peppers to help put in lights, and especially to SpY, The Wa, BR1, Elfo, Guildor, who gave us a hand, even stopping working on their own pieces, so ours could move ahead.

One last mention for Gianni, a very special character, who in addition to solving all kinds of logistical problems for us and giving us a helping hand with the more routine work, gave us emotional support and taught us what true Calabrian hospitality is
