Flags don’t hold / Las banderas no sostienen
Last April 14, Día de la República (Republic Day), we thought it was the perfect day to take up our guerrilla activities again and go out into the streets to protest against the situation we are currently in, deep in a long-lasting crisis, affording ourselves the luxury of maintaining a king who doesn’t rule but ispaid as if he actually did, and a bunch of incompetent politicians who are not even able to reach an agreement as to how to do their job.
An absurd reality that has dragged us into second elections that could keep in power a retrograde, evindently corrupt party. It looks like us, Spanish people, are masochists…
Bearing all this in mind, we came up with the idea of paying a luminous visit to one of the places which best represents this retrograde, chauvinistic spirit that magnifies the symbols of power while it turns its back on the crude reality of citizens. In Madrid, this patriotic symbol has the shape of a 14 x 21 meter flag, weighing 19,000 kilos and bound to a 50 meter high flagpole.
This humongous piece of fabric flaps in the wind at Plaza Colón (Columbus Square), a famous place among tourists and hardly visited by local Madrilenians, though we can still feel its daunting presence even while driving around the downtown area.
So there we went. In an attempt to make the best of the blowing wind that keeps the flag moving, we gathered an army of more than 200 toy parachutes to which we added light and left adrift on the ground.
To our surprise, the wind refused to work that night and neither moved the flag nor our parachutes. So they finally remained motionless and the figurines stayed lying on the ground bleeding metaphorically. Everything looked very dramatic.
We called this piece “Las banderas no sostienen” («Flags Don’t Hold) and there isn’t much more we can say about it. We leave this for everyone’s interpretation.
This piece was installed for less than 2 hours. During this time, no one visited the square. So we finally picked everything up leaving no trace of our visit.

El pasado 14 de abril, Día de la República, nos pareció oportuno retomar nuestras actividades de guerrilla y echarnos a la calle para protestar contra la situación en la que nos encontramos, metidos en una profunda y larga crisis, y permitiéndonos el lujo de mantener a un rey, que no gobierna pero que cobra como si lo hiciera, y a unos políticos que son incapaces de ponerse de acuerdo para hacer su trabajo.
Una absurda realidad que nos ha arrastrado a unas segundas elecciones, y que podrían mantener en el poder a un partido retrógrado y demostradamente corrupto. Da la sensación de que los españoles somos masoquistas…
Pensando en estas cosas, se nos ocurrió que podríamos hacer una visita luminosa a uno de los lugares, donde más visible se hace este espíritu retrógrado y patriotero que magnifica los símbolos del poder, mientras cierra los ojos a la cruda realidad de los ciudadanos. En Madrid, este símbolo patriótico tiene forma de bandera, de 14 x 21 metros, sujeta a un mástil de 50 metros y pesa 19.000 kilos.
Este inmenso troza de tela, ondea al viento en la céntrica Plaza de Colón, lugar de paso para turistas y escasamente frecuentado por los madrileños, que aun sin acercarnos podemos sentir su imponente presencia cada vez que nos desplazamos en coche por la ciudad.
Allí nos fuimos, e intentando aprovechar el gran viento que corre y que da vida a la bandera, nos armamos con un ejercito de mas de 200 paracaídas infantiles, a los que añadimos luz, y dejamos en el suelo, a merced del viento.
Pero sorprendentemente, el viento esa noche no quiso ponerse a trabajar y ni movió la bandera ni levantó nuestros paracaídas, por lo que finalmente quedaron inertes y las figuritas, estampadas y sangrando metafóricamente en el suelo. Todo muy dramático.
Llamamos a la pieza, «Las banderas no sostienen» y poco más tenemos que decir sobre ella, mejor que cada uno interprete lo que quiera.
La pieza estuvo instalada menos de 2 horas, tiempo en el que nadie transitó por la plaza, por lo que finalmente recogimos todo, y no quedó rastro de nuestra visita.
