When there are no more leaves / Cuando no queden hojas

.

One of our recurring concerns is the possibility of the natural disappearing to make way for a spectacular imitation, adapted to the whimsical tastes and needs of «civilised man.»

It is true that nature has been shaped over the centuries to meet the ever-increasing demands of humankind. Large populations have demanded their space in it, and it has been manipulated to increase its efficiency and feed an overpopulated world.

However, what is currently happening is not justified for the benefit of humanity, but is driven by the selfishness of a privileged society that thinks only of its own interests. This society is incapable of looking to a future that does not belong to it and to which it is denying its survival.

As trees disappear, the earth warms, glaciers melt, and water becomes scarce, scarce natural environments are transformed into creatively and technologically designed decorations. In order to suit the tastes of an increasingly infantilised consumer, who pays to experience an artificially created reality.

In this way, the natural becomes a carefully produced spectacle, for which we pay a ticket to enjoy it, without having to worry about adverse conditions or seasonality.

Our proposal for the piece When There Are No More Leaves starts with a dry or leafless tree, which we will protect with a white canvas structure, illuminated and surrounded by fans.

We will fill this structure with thousands of tree leaves drawn on paper and silhouetted, which will be moved by the wind produced by the fans. This effect will create swirls of fake leaves that will rotate around the naked tree.

This installation is a metaphor for how we prefer to remove the natural and then recreate it artificially, with more spectacular and restricted access.

We hope to be able to realise this idea very soon.

—————————–

On Blank Pages / En hojas blancas. Durham 2023

Last November we were invited by Artichoke to take part in Lumiere Durham 2023, one of the most prestigious light festivals in the world.

The chosen piece was «On Blank Pages», which we have already carried out in many cities around the world and which has become one of our favorites, as it allows us real interaction with the visitors, who become the creators of the piece, which is transformed and filled with meaning based on their contributions.

The purpose of the piece has been the same as on previous occasions, to carry out a large-scale installation with a poetic character, a wall of free expression where the thoughts of citizens can be shown without censorship, made of light and sound. A large wall covered by thousands of white sheet notebooks that invade the public space and house a monumental collage of anonymous and intimate interventions that the wind moves at random, offering the spectator millions of random compositions, the fruit of collective contributions.

In this case, we used some 2,200 notebooks of white sheets, made with paper derived from cement, which makes it resistant to inclement weather and totally ecological.

The festival proposed that we work on a specific theme, «The judicial system,» and of course, we thought it was most appropriate. Artichoke’s learning and participation teams organized workshops with groups from across the UK, and the participants’ responses also formed part of the installation.

The booklets explored the UK judicial process, the prison system and its impact, as well as current colonial regimes and justice-related issues. In almost all the contributions, there was a common voice, that the system has failed and that power is in the wrong hands.

An online form was also created where anyone could respond to questions about the justice system, an effective way of getting the initiative across the country. The answers were transcribed by hand into notebooks by groups of volunteers.

All this groundwork done with the communities is what gives the piece its true value and makes it unique each time. It never ceases to amaze us what people manage to convey through their writings and drawings; they are extremely generous in their contributions and sincere in their comments.

To find out more about the organizations that have taken part in the piece, you can do so here. You can also see images of some of the interventions.

We would like to thank all the associations and organizations that have made the piece possible. To the coordination teams of Artichoke and groups of volunteers and cultural and social organizations in the city of Durham. To the visitors and neighbors who showed their civic-mindedness and their desire to participate.

Of course, to the organization of the festival, Artichoke, for counting on us again and putting at our disposal resources and an extraordinary human team, special thanks to Beth, Hannah, Kate, Zafeerah for taking on the complicated management of this work. And of course, to Melisa Hernández for the wonderful photographic report.

Assembly time: 4 days.
Material preparation time: 3 months

Quebec 2023

Last October we were invited by EXMURO Arts Publics to participate in the Passages Insolites Festival in Quebec, with our piece Literature vs Traffic, which we have already performed in many cities around the world.

The idea of this piece has not changed since the first time we carried it out:

We want literature to take over the streets and to become the conqueror of all public places, offering passersby a traffic-free area that will, for a few hours, surrender to the humble might of the written word.

Thus, a place in the city usually dedicated to speed, pollution, and noise, shall turn, for one night, into a place of peace, quiet, and coexistence, lighted by the soft dim light issued from the book pages.

The books will be available for those who want to take them, so the installation will recycle itself and will last as long as its users decide to make it disappear.

Cars will eventually re-claim their place. However, those who walked by this place that night will hold the memory of how once books took over it, so they will have a better relationship with it.”

To raise the 11,000 books needed to complete the piece, we relied on organisations specialising in used books, libraries and bookshops. Local residents also contributed, donating books that were collected in various mailboxes set up throughout the city.

We also relied on more than 50 volunteers, citizens interested in literature and art in general, who were contacted through a public call. They helped us in the whole process of assembling and placing the books.

The piece was installed for 1 day and a local literature festival organised a participatory literary open mic, in which members of the public were invited to read fragments of books from the installation, or books that they themselves had brought, as well as texts of their own creation.

During the evening, visitors were invited to go inside the piece, enjoy the books and of course take the ones they were most interested in.

Those that were left without owners at the end of the night, were collected and kept by the organisation to give them new uses and the street returned to its normal activities the next day as if nothing had happened.

Many thanks to EXMURO for inviting us to participate in the 2023 edition of Passages Insolites, especially to Michelle and Emmanuelle who personally made sure that everything went exactly as we had planned.

Of course, full thanks to the volunteers who generously gave us their time and to the book lovers who shared their precious treasures with us. And we cannot fail to mention Stéphane Bourgeois who photographed the whole process and what happened during the exhibition of the piece and Rachel Trudeau, Nicolas Lamoureux and Simon Trudeau who shared their videos with us.

Christmas in the trenches / Navidad de trincheras

Few public celebrations should be allowed this year. If the Christmas spirit of peace and love can’t even reach Bethlehem, how can we artificially install it in our streets and squares?

So, our annual Christmas styling exercise, which consists of imagining an urban decoration in keeping with the times in which we live, comes with dim lighting and lots of barbed wire. We don’t have the creativity for more festive themes.

So nothing… another year without much to celebrate.

Hopefully the excess of light won’t prevent us from seeing the terrifying darkness that stalks us.

Thanks to @zekewenders for this creepy simulation.
