Inhabiting the City Light (A Parasite Action for Streetlights) / Habitando la luz urbana (Una acción parásita para farolas)

Continuing on the idea of finding zero-power-consuming options to replace the high-power-consuming lighted works, we used more realistic images to revisit an old idea of ours called Inhabiting the City Light (2013) which, in our opinion, makes more sense now than ever.

We used streetlights again to carry it out. However, this time we have dyed their beams with warm colors thus creating comfortable spaces people can step into and hang out there awhile at night.

These little bastions of parasitized light could be used to enjoy an intimate moment, or to read under a good light, to meditate, to have a friendly talk with other people, to check your cellphone, or just to sit and relax and observe whatever goes on outside.

They could also serve as little stages to offer all sorts of performances which can be seen by passers-by as they go about their business.

We picture an orchestra playing live or dancers evolving, public lectures or tiny workshops…

We are dying to see this piece set up and obviously in use.

Siguiendo con la idea de buscar alternativas de cero consumo eléctrico a las piezas de luz de gran consumo eléctrico, hemos querido revisar con imágenes más realistas, una antigua idea que llamamos Habitando la luz urbana del 2013 y que nos parece que hoy tiene más sentido que nunca.

Para llevarla a cabo, seguimos con las farolas, pero esta vez hemos teñido su haz de luz de colores cálidos, lo que nos sirve para crear espacios confortables en los que la gente pueda entrar y quedarse tiempo durante la noche.

Estos pequeños reductos de luz parasitada, se podrían usar por ejemplo, para disfrutar de un momento de recogimiento, para la lectura con buena luz, para la meditación, para una charla íntima rodeados de gente, para mirar el móvil sólo, o simplemente para sentarse a descansar y observar lo que pasa fuera.

Pero también podrían servir de pequeños escenarios, en los que llevar a cabo acciones performativas de todo tipo y que puedan ser vistas por el resto de los ciudadanos en sus desplazamientos por la ciudad.

Nos imaginamos dentro… una orquesta tocando en directo, o bailarines evolucionando, lecturas públicas o diminutos talleres…

Estamos deseando ver esta pieza instalada y por supuesto usada.

Inhabiting urban light / Habitar la luz urbana

‘Inhabiting urban light’ is a project that emerged in 2013 as a challenge: to create a piece suitable for festivals and light-related events that would take advantage of the city’s light resources without generating additional consumption. Already at that time, we felt that there was a perception that light events were a great waste of energy, something that, with current electricity prices, could be considered unethical.

Now, in a complex political and social context, this idea makes more sense than ever. We have therefore decided to graphically revise the project, refine it and present it in a more attractive and understandable way.

The approach is simple: to use the light of urban street lamps to transform their light beam into a living space, where people can spend time at night without external energy sources. In this way, instead of adding electricity consumption to the city, we use the resources that are already available in the streets.

The design consists of lightweight cone-shaped metal structures, created from two circumferences joined by rods. These structures, which can vary in size and shape depending on the type of luminaire to be intervened, will be attached directly to the foot of the lampposts located in main streets or squares.

To enclose the structure and create a sheltered environment, they will be covered with white semi-transparent tulle fabric. In this way, the light beam from the lampposts is captured, creating a cosy and comfortable environment that invites citizens to spend time there free of charge and without consuming additional resources. These spaces could also serve as intimate settings for free cultural activities.

Beyond being an energy-free piece in a light event, ‘Inhabiting Urban Light’ addresses a growing problem: energy poverty. This reality affects thousands of people who cannot afford to pay high electricity rates. In a context where having access to light at home has become a luxury for many, this piece seeks to make this social injustice visible while offering a space where urban light becomes the protagonist.

In addition, the project underlines the importance of good lighting in public spaces, which facilitates the lives of citizens by allowing them to be in well-lit streets at night and feel safe. At the same time, it reminds that this is achieved with public money, coming from the taxes of all citizens.

With this piece, we aim not only to create an artistic intervention, but also to raise awareness about energy poverty and to show that it is possible to generate sustainable and community spaces without resorting to high energy consumption, always thinking about the common good.

The piece would be open all day for people to use, and at night, once lit up, it could serve both as an urban shelter and as a stage for cultural activities, such as concerts or small-scale theatre.

In addition, it could include elements such as cushions, chairs and tables to make it more comfortable, or let the neighbours themselves inhabit it and adapt it according to their needs.

Hopefully we will soon be able to carry it out.

«Habitar la luz urbana» es un proyecto que surgió en 2013 como un desafío: crear una pieza adecuada para festivales y eventos relacionados con la luz, que aprovechara los recursos lumínicos de la ciudad sin generar un consumo adicional. Ya en aquel momento, considerábamos que existía la percepción de que los eventos de luz suponen un gran despilfarro energético, algo que, con los precios actuales de la electricidad, podría considerarse poco ético.

Ahora, en un contexto político y social complejo, esta idea cobra más sentido que nunca. Por ello, hemos decidido revisar gráficamente el proyecto, refinarlo y presentarlo de una manera más atractiva y comprensible.

El planteamiento es sencillo: aprovechar la luz de las farolas urbanas para transformar su haz lumínico en un espacio habitable, donde las personas puedan pasar tiempo durante la noche sin recurrir a fuentes de energía externas. De esta manera, en lugar de añadir consumo eléctrico a la ciudad, utilizamos los recursos que ya están disponibles en las calles.

El diseño consiste en estructuras metálicas ligeras con forma de cono, creadas a partir de dos circunferencias unidas por varillas. Estas estructuras, que pueden variar en tamaño y forma según el tipo de luminaria que se intervenga, se acoplarán directamente al pie de las farolas ubicadas en calles principales o plazas.

Para cerrar la estructura y crear un ambiente resguardado, estas se cubrirán con tela de tul semitransparente de color blanco. De esta manera, se captura el haz de luz de las farolas, generando un entorno acogedor y confortable que invita a los ciudadanos a pasar tiempo en él de manera gratuita y sin consumir recursos adicionales. Estos espacios podrían servir, además, como escenarios íntimos para actividades culturales gratuitas.

Más allá de ser una pieza sin consumo energético en un evento de luz, «Habitar la luz urbana» aborda una problemática creciente: la pobreza energética. Esta realidad afecta a miles de personas que no pueden permitirse pagar las altas tarifas de la electricidad. En un contexto en el que tener acceso a la luz en casa se ha convertido en un lujo para muchos, esta pieza busca visibilizar esta injusticia social mientras ofrece un espacio donde la luz urbana se convierte en protagonista.

Además, el proyecto subraya la importancia de una buena iluminación en los espacios públicos, que facilita la vida de los ciudadanos al permitirles estar en calles bien iluminadas durante la noche y sentirse a salvo. Al mismo tiempo, recuerda que esto se logra con dinero público, proveniente de los impuestos de todos los ciudadanos.

Con esta pieza, no sólo pretendemos crear una intervención artística, sino también sensibilizar sobre la pobreza energética y demostrar que es posible generar espacios sostenibles y comunitarios sin recurrir a un alto consumo energético, siempre pensando en el bien común.

La pieza estaría abierta todo el día para que la gente pueda usarla, y por las noches, ya iluminada, podría servir tanto como refugio urbano como escenario para actividades culturales, como conciertos o teatro de pequeño formato.

Además, podría incluir elementos como cojines, sillas y mesas para hacerla más confortable, o dejar que los propios vecinos la habiten y adapten según sus necesidades.

Ojalá pronto podamos llevarla a cabo.

Inhabiting the urban light / Habitando la luz urbana

Con nuestro proyecto aun no realizado Habitando la luz urbana queremos dar visibilidad a la luz urbana, de manera que seamos conscientes de su importancia en nuestra vida y la gran evolución que ha supuesto que todos los espacios urbanos estén iluminados y se pueda estar en ellos sin miedo.

Proponemos pues, una instalación de unas 40 piezas de tela elástica en forma de cono que se sujetan a la parte superior de las farolas y cuya tela se va abriendo hasta alcanzar el suelo terminando en una circunferencia de 1,20 metros de diámetro.

En la parte interior del cono, la tela tendrá una apertura para que la gente pueda meterse en el interior del cono. Al ser semitransparente las personas que estén fuera podrán ver lo que pasa en el interior del espacios iluminado.

La luz que saldrá de las farolas, quedará pues atrapada en el espacio interior de nuestro cono y según el color de la tela, toda la calle se teñirá de la misma tonalidad.

Con esta propuesta, queremos llevar a cabo una instalación que no conlleve ningun gasto de energía para la ciudad. Siempre tratamos de pensar en instalaciones de mínimos recursos y máxima efectividad y vistosidad, ya que creemos que en tiempos de crisis es importante poder seguir trabajando, a pesar de las condiciones adversas y hacerlo de manera responsible, sin derrochar energía. Es importante para nosotros que se perciba esta economía de medios en esta pieza.

With our unrealized project Inhabiting the urban light, we want to increase the visibility of urban light, so that the citizens realize its importance in their lives and the great evolution that has taken place to illuminate all urban spaces in order that the same things can be done as during the day without any fear.

We propose a installation of about 40 pieces of fabric in the shape of a cone that are fastened to the top of the street lamps (of the kind we have indicated in our drawings) whose fabric will open out until it reaches the ground terminating in a circumference of 1.2 meters in diameter.

That is to say we will create a cone that goes from the top edge of the lamppost to the ground by outlining a false, solid beam of light, as if the light had been made solid.

On the inside of the cone, created by the crook, the fabric will have an opening so that people can enter into the cone and being semi-transparent, those that are outside can see what happens inside.

The light which is produced by the lampposts, will be trapped in the space inside our cone and depending on the color of the fabric, the whole street will be colored with the same hue.

The cloth used will be semi-transparent to allow the light to pass through and so that one can see what’s happening on the inside as well as elastic so that the inhabitants of the light can vary its shape with their hands. Also, the very same citizens that enter into this magic space, will be able to design their own beam of light.

We want to carry out a light installation that does not entail any expenditure of energy for the city. We always try to think of minimum resource installations that have maximum effectiveness and visibility, as we believe that in times of crisis it is important to be able to continue working, despite the adverse conditions and to do so in a responsible way, without wasting energy, this is one of our constant inspirations. It is our desire that the people perceive this economy of means in our piece.

Inhabiting fountains / Habitando fuentes

Habitando Fuentes es otro de los proyecto que teníamos guardado y que ahora queremos compartir, hasta que llegue el momento de llevarlo a cabo.

Nos gustan las fuentes en la ciudad, estar cerca de ellas nos produce bienestar y sosiego y ayuda algo a sobrevivir en la ajetreada vida diaria. Suelen estar situadas en espacios privilegiados, a su alrededor abunda la vegetación ornamental y al estar ubicadas en zonas de atracción turística, no se escatima en su cuidado.

A pesar de que la gente se para a contemplarlas, la mayoría de las veces no son realmente usadas por los ciudadanos ya que suele haber barreras arquitectónicas que las protegen.

Nosotros pensamos que quizás en su interior se escondan puertas secretas a mundos desconocido y sorprendente y nos proponemos habitarde manera efímera el fondo de una fuente, transportando la vida cotidiana al interior de sus quietas aguas.

Para ello, dejaremos flotando puertas semiabiertas por las que el sonido y la luz del hogar se escapen, imaginando que en su interior, la vida transcurre normalmente.

El sonido ambiente, habrá sido grabado en el interior de casas de la zona, con ruidos de puertas que se abren, sonidos de televisión, música, conversaciones, cubiertos en la mesa… actos cotidianos que todos llevamos a cabo en nuestro hogar. Pediremos la colaboración de vecinos para que nos dejen grabar sus vidas cotidianas y trasladarlas dentro de la fuente.

Inhabiting fountains is another project we had saved and now we want to share, until the time comes to carry it out.

We like fountains in the city, to be close to them produces a feeling of well-being, tranquility, helping in some way to survive the busy daily life.

Often, they are located in priveleged spaces, abundantly surrounded by ornamental vegetation and located in areas which are attractive to tourists, their care not lacking.

In spite of the fact that people stop to contemplate them, the majority of the time they are not really used by the citizens, given that they usually have architectural barriers protecting them.

We think, that maybe in their interiors, they hide secret doors to unknown and surprising worlds, of exemplary town planning, impossible to find in other spaces in the city and we propose to inhabit, in an ephemeral way, the depths of a fountain, transporting the daily lives of families to the interior of its quiet waters.

For this purpose, we will float partially opened doors, through which the sound and light of the homes will escape, imagining that in its interior, life goes on normally.

There will also be ambient sound, which will have been recorded inside homes with the sound of opening doors, television sounds, músic, conversations, cutlery on the table… daily acts which all of us carry out in our homes. We will ask the cooperation of neighbors to let us recording their daily lives and transfer them into the fountain.

Celebrating public spaces / Celebrando el espacio público

We want to reclaim public space as a place for gathering and enjoyment, where we can pause, share, and express ourselves freely, without feeling pressured to consume. However, in Spain, with the Civil Security Law , something as simple as standing in front of a government building can lead to hefty fines or even arrests. These measures have turned the simple act of stopping in a shared public space into something that, inexplicably, can be interpreted as an offense.

Adding to this is the increasing occupation of public spaces by terraces and commercial zones, where you can only stay if you consume. If not, the only option seems to be to pass through quickly, without stopping, without inhabiting it. This reality limits the very essence of public space, which should be a free place for connection, rest, and celebration, beyond the dynamics imposed by consumerism.

It is becoming increasingly difficult to celebrate in spaces that seem reserved for the political and commercial interests of a few. But we won’t conform. Let’s throw a party!

That’s why we created «Celebrating Public Space», an artistic intervention that turns the ordinary into the extraordinary through light and reflections. Benches, fountains, street lamps, bollards, and pavements are covered in small mirrors, projecting glimmers that transform the surroundings into a kaleidoscope of constantly shifting lights. Mobile spotlights, mounted on tripods, sway with the wind, bathing the entire space in beams of light that seem to dance and change with each moment.

At night, visitors are invited to join with flashlights or headlamps, creating their own reflections and leaving their light imprint in a space that becomes interactive and alive. This proposal aims to restore the original purpose of public space: to be a place for gathering, enjoyment, and expression, not merely a thoroughfare or a place conditioned by consumption.

The installation is fully reversible and ephemeral, designed to respect the environment and disappear once it concludes. But its message endures: every glimmer of light is a reminder that the city belongs to all of us and that celebrating together, without restrictions or impositions, is a form of peaceful and creative resistance.

Queremos recuperar el espacio público como un lugar de encuentro y disfrute, donde podamos detenernos, compartir y expresarnos libremente, sin sentirnos obligados a consumir. Sin embargo, en España, con la Ley de Seguridad Ciudadana , algo tan sencillo como permanecer frente a un edificio gubernamental puede convertirse en motivo de multas desmesuradas o incluso arrestos. Este tipo de medidas ha convertido el simple hecho de detenerse en un espacio común en un acto que, incomprensiblemente, puede interpretarse como una infracción.

A esto se suma la creciente ocupación del espacio público por terrazas y zonas comerciales, donde solo puedes permanecer si consumes. Si no es así, parece que solo queda la opción de atravesar el lugar rápidamente, sin detenerse, sin habitarlo. Esta realidad limita la esencia misma del espacio público, que debería ser un lugar libre para convivir, descansar y celebrar, más allá de las dinámicas impuestas por el consumo.

Cada vez es más difícil celebrar en espacios que parecen estar reservados a los intereses políticos y comerciales de unos pocos. Pero no nos conformamos. ¡Hagamos fiesta!

Por eso hemos creado «Celebrando el Espacio Público», una intervención artística que convierte lo cotidiano en extraordinario mediante luz y reflejos. Bancos, fuentes, farolas, bolardos y pavimento se cubren de pequeños espejos, proyectando destellos que transforman el entorno en un caleidoscopio de luces en constante movimiento. Los focos móviles, montados sobre trípodes, se mueven con el viento, bañando todo el espacio con haces de luz que parecen bailar y cambiar a cada instante.

Por la noche, los visitantes son invitados a sumarse con linternas o luces frontales, creando sus propios reflejos y dejando su huella de luz en un espacio que se vuelve interactivo y vivo. Esta propuesta busca devolverle al espacio público su propósito original: ser un lugar de encuentro, disfrute y expresión, no solo un paso obligado ni un lugar condicionado al consumo.

La instalación es completamente reversible y efímera, pensada para respetar el entorno y desaparecer al finalizar. Pero su mensaje perdura: cada destello de luz es un recordatorio de que la ciudad nos pertenece a todos y que celebrar juntos, sin restricciones ni imposiciones, es una forma de resistencia pacífica y creativa.
