We want to share some versions of On Blank Pages that have been requested in different countries but ha

ve not yet been realized. These speculative proposals show the adaptability of the piece to different contexts, cultures, and public spaces.

On Blank Pages is an artwork we have already carried out in many parts of the world, where it has taken on new meanings through the voices and reflections of the people who participated. Each version becomes a living archive of emotions, memories, and shared thoughts about identity, community, and the role of culture in public life.

Queremos compartir algunas versiones inéditas de nuestra instalación En hojas blancas, propuestas que nos han solicitado en distintas partes del mundo pero que aún no hemos llegado a materializar.

A lo largo de los años, la pieza ha cobrado vida en numerosas ciudades, adaptándose a diferentes contextos sociales y urbanos, siempre con la voluntad de invitar a la ciudadanía a escribir, intervenir y compartir sus pensamientos sobre temas que nos afectan a todos.

Estas versiones que aún no han visto la luz nos permiten imaginar nuevas formas de activar el espacio público a través de la escritura colectiva y la luz, y mantienen viva nuestra voluntad de seguir ampliando los caminos de esta obra.

On Blank Pages / En Hojas Blancas (version for canals)

Several months ago, we presented a project specifically designed for the canals of Amsterdam, inspired by our piece “On Blank Pages”, which we have successfully carried out in various cities worldwide, always with formal adaptations to suit the local context. Although this idea will not ultimately be carried out in Amsterdam, we believe it could come to life in any body of water that meets the necessary conditions for its development.

The theme given to us for the proposal was «Legacy,» a concept that raises essential questions: How will we be remembered? Contrasted with: How do we want to be remembered? We see this as a perfect approach to be explored through personal reflections written on blank pages.

The project would begin with the distribution of blank notebooks among neighbors, collectives, and local groups, inviting them to reflect in private on the meaning of «legacy.» Questions such as: What values are worth preserving? What inherited problems could we try to solve? What ideas do we want to pass on to future generations? would serve as a guide to stimulate their contributions.

Each notebook would be personalized with total freedom: writing, drawing, or expressing ideas in any form would be valid, with no rules or worries about doing it «right» or «wrong.» The goal would be to create a free and anonymous space where all voices could be included.

Once completed, the notebooks would be suspended over the water and illuminated to create a visually impactful installation. From afar, they would offer a magical and evocative atmosphere; up close, they would invite passersby to stop, read, and discover the reflections of the community. Walking alongside the water would provide a unique visual and auditory experience: the notebooks, swaying in the wind, would reflect light onto the water, creating a dynamic and ever-changing environment that symbolizes the living and evolving nature of ideas.

The theme of «legacy» aligns perfectly with our proposal, as it would not represent something fixed or rigid but rather something fluid and constantly evolving, like life itself and the water that sustains the installation. The piece would not only aim for visual impact but would also invite reflection on what we want to build and leave for those who come after us.

More than just an aesthetic installation, “On Blank Pages”, as in previous versions that addressed other themes, would serve as a platform for people to share what they consider essential to preserve, what they aspire to change, and what they dream of for the future. By coming together in this space, these private reflections would transform into a powerful collective testimony.

To bring it to life, simple white paper would be used. Depending on the weather conditions, basic recycled paper or a water-resistant and eco-friendly variant could be employed. This paper could be presented as illuminated sheets clipped into place, as we did with our piece «Hojas por Hojas» , or as notebooks illuminated with small internal bulbs or autonomous lights that would be easier to install and provide an intimate yet perfectly perceptible glow.

The final appearance of the installation would always adapt to the setting and the optimization of costs, as is customary in our work. We have considered some initial options, which are reflected in these images, but there are endless possibilities to explore. We even thought about the beauty of leaving the paper completely white so that everyone could imagine what they wanted to write on it.

Hace varios meses presentamos un proyecto diseñado específicamente para los canales de Ámsterdam, inspirado en nuestra pieza “En hojas blancas”, que ya hemos llevado a cabo con éxito en diversas ciudades del mundo, siempre con adaptaciones formales para adaptarla al contexto local. Aunque esta idea finalmente no se llevará a cabo en Ámsterdam, creemos que podría cobrar vida en cualquier espacio de agua que reúna las condiciones necesarias para desarrollarla.

El tema que se nos dio para la propuesta era «El legado», una cuestión que plantea preguntas esenciales: ¿Cómo seremos recordados? contrapuesto a ¿Cómo queremos ser recordados? Nos parece un enfoque perfecto para desarrollarlo a través de reflexiones personales plasmadas en hojas en blanco.

El proyecto comenzaría con la distribución de cuadernos en blanco entre vecinos, colectivos y grupos locales, invitándolos a reflexionar en la intimidad sobre el significado del «legado». Preguntas como: ¿Qué valores merece la pena preservar? ¿Qué problemas heredados podríamos intentar resolver? ¿Qué ideas queremos transmitir a las generaciones futuras? servirían como guía para estimular sus contribuciones.

Cada cuaderno sería personalizado con total libertad: escribir, dibujar o expresar ideas de cualquier forma sería válido, sin reglas ni preocupaciones por hacerlo «bien» o «mal». El objetivo sería crear un espacio libre y anónimo donde todas las voces tuvieran cabida.

Una vez completados, los cuadernos se suspenderían sobre el agua y serían iluminados para formar una instalación visualmente impactante. Desde lejos, ofrecerían una atmósfera mágica y evocadora; de cerca, invitarían a quienes paseen a detenerse, leer y descubrir las reflexiones de la comunidad. Pasear junto al agua permitiría disfrutar de una experiencia visual y sonora única: los cuadernos, movidos por el viento, reflejarían las luces sobre el agua, creando un ambiente dinámico y cambiante que simboliza la naturaleza viva y en evolución de las ideas.

El tema del «legado» se alinea perfectamente con nuestra propuesta, ya que no se trataría de algo fijo ni rígido, sino fluido y en evolución constante, como la vida misma y como el agua que sustenta la instalación. La pieza no solo buscaría un impacto visual, sino que también invitaría a reflexionar sobre lo que queremos construir y dejar para quienes nos sigan.

Más que una instalación estética, “En hojas blancas”, como en anteriores versiones en las que se plantearon otros temas, sería una plataforma para que las personas compartieran lo que consideran esencial preservar, lo que aspirarían a cambiar y lo que soñarían para el futuro. Al unirse en este espacio, estas reflexiones privadas se transformarían en un poderoso testimonio colectivo.

Para materializarla, se utilizaría simple papel blanco. Según las condiciones climáticas, podría emplearse papel reciclado básico o una variante resistente al agua y ecológica. Este papel podría presentarse en forma de folios iluminados sujetos por pinzas, como hicimos en nuestra pieza «Hojas por Hojas», o bien como cuadernos iluminados mediante pequeñas bombillas interiores o luces autónomas que serían más fáciles de instalar y generarían una iluminación íntima pero perfectamente perceptible.

La apariencia final de la instalación siempre se adaptaría al entorno y a la optimización de los costes, como es habitual en nuestro trabajo. Hemos pensado en algunas opciones iniciales que plasmamos en estas imágenes, pero hay infinitas posibilidades que explorar. Incluso hemos pensado en la belleza de dejar el papel completamente blanco para que cada uno imagine lo que quería escribir en él.

Ojalá pronto podamos verla cobrar vida y lucir sobre nuestras cabezas.

On Blank Pages (a Somehow Christmassy Version) / En hojas blancas (versión algo navideña). Las Palmas de Gran Canaria 2022

This month of December we were invited by LPA Cultura of Las Palmas city hall to carry out a Christmas intervention that would differ from those typical luminous proposals that adorn the cities with a Christian tradition.

They proposed to us the idea of doing our piece On Blank Pages but a Christmassy version of it, so that in this case we would use the classic conic structure that shapes the commonly lighted trees that sprout everywhere these days.

We found it interesting to bare this Christmas icon of every ornament and just cover it with notebooks filled with blank back-lighted pages so that we would obtain a paper surface full of light which would invite visitors to leave their spontaneous contributions.

We placed it at the entrance of Castillo de Mata. To complete this intervention, we created a wall with light and notebooks as well. It was embedded in the surrounding architecture so that it perfectly blended with the centenarian stones.

The paper, the light, the color ink, the wind moving the pages and the sound produced by this, became the protagonists of this barely Christmassy piece.

We want to thank Las Palmas de Gran Canaria city hall, the LPA Cultura and Promoción Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Special thanks to Rafael Pérez who proposed this thrilling project to us; also to Miguel Hernández, José Ignacio Aguiar and especially to Yeray González and his team who did their magic to make everything happen on time.

When we left, the paper was still blank. However, we expect to achieve during the holidays what we always expect of this piece, which is to create a blank surface “where people can express themselves freely creating a collage of anonymous intimate interventions carelessly swayed by the wind offering spectators a myriad of random compositions stemming from collective contributions.” We are almost there!

Este mes de diciembre hemos sido invitados por LPA Cultura del Ayuntamiento de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria para llevar a cabo una intervención navideña alejada de las propuestas lumínicas que adornan las ciudades de tradición cristiana.

Nos plantearon llevar a cabo la pieza En hojas blancas, pero en versión «un poco navideña», usando como soporte la típica estructura cónica que da forma a los árboles de luminosos, que emergen como setas en estas fechas.

Nos pareció interesante poder despojar a este icono navideño de todo ornamento, y simplemente cubrirlo de cuadernos de hojas blancas y retroiluminarlo, para conseguir una superficie de papel de luz en la que invitar a los visitantes a dejar sus libres aportaciones.

Lo hemos situado en la entrada del Castillo de Mata, y para completar la intervención hemos creamos un muro, también con luz y cuadernos, que acoplado a la arquitectura del espacio, consigue una fusión total con la piedra centenaria.

El papel, la luz, la tinta de colores, el viento que mueve las hojas y el sonido que se produce cuando esto pasa, se convierten en protagonistas de esta obra con poco aspecto navideño.

Queremos dar las gracias al Ayuntamiento de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, a la LPA Cultura, Promoción Las Palmas de Gran Canaria y en especial a Rafael Pérez que fue quien nos planteó el reto, también a Miguel Hernández, José Ignacio Aguiar y especialmente a Yeray González y su equipo, que hicieron la magia para que todo saliera en tiempo y forma.

Cuando nos fuimos, aun el papel estaba blanco, pero a lo largo de las fiestas esperamos conseguir lo que siempre queremos con esta pieza «Una superficie blanca de libre expresión, un collage de intervenciones anónimas e íntimas que el viento mueva al azar ofreciendo al espectador millones de composiciones aleatorias, fruto de las aportaciones colectivas». Ya casi lo tenemos!.

On Blank Pages / En hojas blancas. Brixen 2026

Last May we participated in the Water Light Festival 2026 in Brixen (Italy) with our piece On Blank Pages.

The installation was presented in front of the city’s cathedral, as part of an edition dedicated to reflecting on peace under the theme “Imagine Peace.” For this occasion, we built a large circular wall of free expression measuring 12 meters in diameter and 3 meters in height, covered with thousands of blank pages illuminated from within, on which visitors could freely write and draw.

As in previous versions of the piece, we wanted to create a space where people could freely share opinions, questions, concerns, or proposals related to the theme proposed by the festival. Little by little, the pages filled with texts and drawings about peace, coexistence, contemporary conflicts, and the ways in which we imagine a better future.

Over the course of the festival, contributions accumulated progressively. Words, drawings, and messages covered the pages, creating a large collage of anonymous and intimate interventions. The occasional action of the wind moved the sheets and altered the reading of the whole, allowing the installation to constantly offer new compositions to those who visited it. For this version, we used an ecological water-resistant paper capable of withstanding the weather conditions throughout the festival without any problems.

As is often the case with this piece, participation began in the early morning and continued well into the night. The lighting transformed the installation after dark, but during the day the written pages continued to attract visitors in the same way. On this occasion, the installation coincided with numerous activities organized in the square, which encouraged many children to approach and intervene the notebooks. Their drawings, messages, and spontaneous ideas brought a special energy to the piece and entertained us throughout the festival.

On Blank Pages is a piece that we have carried out in numerous cities and countries over the years. Each new version incorporates the concerns and sensibilities of the people who inhabit it. In Brixen, the pages ended up gathering hundreds of reflections around a question as complex as it is necessary: how to imagine peace.

We would like to thank the entire Water Light Festival team for inviting us to take part in this edition and for accompanying us throughout the process. Special thanks to Nika, Hanna and Simon for their trust, support and help in bringing the project to life.

We would also like to thank the City of Brixen for welcoming the installation into such an extraordinary setting, the technical team for their excellent work and dedication, and all the residents and visitors who filled the pages with their contributions and helped build this collective archive of thoughts and wishes. El pasado mes de mayo participamos en el Water Light Festival 2026 de Brixen (Italia) con nuestra pieza «En hojas blancas».

La instalación se presentó frente a la catedral de la ciudad, dentro de una edición dedicada a reflexionar sobre la paz bajo el lema «Imagine Peace». Para ello construimos un gran muro circular de libre expresión de 12 metros de diámetro y 3 metros de altura, recubierto por miles de páginas en blanco iluminadas desde el interior, sobre las que los visitantes podían escribir y dibujar libremente.

Como en anteriores versiones de la pieza, queríamos crear un espacio donde las personas pudieran compartir libremente opiniones, preguntas, inquietudes o propuestas relacionadas con el tema planteado por el festival. Poco a poco, las páginas fueron llenándose de textos y dibujos sobre la paz, la convivencia, los conflictos contemporáneos y la manera en que imaginamos un futuro mejor.

A lo largo de los días, las intervenciones fueron acumulándose de manera progresiva. Palabras, dibujos y mensajes fueron cubriendo las páginas y creando un gran collage de aportaciones anónimas e íntimas. La acción ocasional del viento movía las hojas y alteraba la lectura del conjunto, haciendo que la instalación ofreciera continuamente nuevas composiciones ante los ojos de quienes la visitaban. Para esta versión utilizamos un papel ecológico resistente al agua, capaz de soportar sin problemas las condiciones meteorológicas durante todo el festival.

Como suele ocurrir con esta pieza, la participación comenzó desde las primeras horas de la mañana y continuó hasta bien entrada la noche. La iluminación transformaba la instalación al anochecer, pero durante el día las páginas escritas seguían ejerciendo la misma atracción sobre los visitantes. En esta ocasión coincidió además con numerosas actividades organizadas en la plaza, lo que hizo que muchos niños se acercaran a intervenir los cuadernos. Sus dibujos, mensajes y ocurrencias aportaron una energía especial a la pieza y nos divirtieron especialmente a lo largo de todo el festival.

«En hojas blancas» es una pieza que hemos llevado a cabo en numerosas ciudades y países a lo largo de los últimos años. Cada nueva versión incorpora las preocupaciones y sensibilidades de quienes la habitan. En Brixen, las páginas acabaron reuniendo cientos de reflexiones en torno a una cuestión tan compleja como necesaria: cómo imaginar la paz.

Queremos dar las gracias a todo el equipo del Water Light Festival por invitarnos a formar parte de esta edición y por acompañarnos durante todo el proceso. Gracias especialmente a Nika, Hanna y Simon por su confianza y apoyo.

On Blank Pages / En hojas blancas. Xi’an 2026

In December 2025, we presented our installation On Blank Pages in Xi’an, China, as part of the first edition of the Chang’an International Light Festival, curated by WAVELENGTH and hosted at Xi’an MixC.

The piece is located at the main entrance of the site, beneath a pedestrian bridge, facing the architectural feature known as the “Tree of Life.” Within this urban context, the installation takes the form of a monumental circular structure, 10 meters in diameter and 4 meters high, entirely covered with thousands of notebooks and illuminated from within. The work functions as a wall of light and words: a collective surface where the public can write, read, and transform the piece through their own contributions.

The surrounding space is defined by a contemporary, futuristic architecture, characterized by large scales, metallic surfaces, and technological reflections. Against this backdrop, the installation introduces a humble and everyday material: paper. The delicacy of the notebooks, their fragility, and their manual quality establish a dialogue with the solidity of the environment. In this contrast, the work finds its meaning: vulnerability and intimacy emerge within a landscape dominated by monumentality.

Being located in a covered space intensifies the visual experience. The light emerging from the interior of the structure becomes more concentrated, acquiring an almost physical presence. The ceiling of the bridge, with its reflective surfaces, acts as a suspended mirror that duplicates the installation. The illuminated pages are reflected above, multiplying the image of the notebooks and expanding the presence of the work. Overhead, paper and light form a kind of expanded chamber, where the installation seems to extend beyond its own structure.

Public participation unfolds in a continuous and open way. Visitors stop, read the messages left by others, and add their own words. Over time, the interventions accumulate, and the surface of the work becomes denser, more complex, and more human. Each written page leaves a visible trace, transforming the installation into a collective archive in constant construction.

Throughout this extended period, the work evolves organically: the movement of the pages, the inner light, and the constant interaction of the public turn the structure into a living organism, always changing, always growing. The piece is not a closed object, but a process—a space for encounter, memory, and shared expression.

On Blank Pages is a project we have carried out in different cities and contexts around the world. The Xi’an version stands out for its scale, its duration, the intensity of public participation, and the dialogue between the fragility of paper and the architectural power of its surroundings. In this context, thousands of ordinary pages together acquire an extraordinary dimension.

En diciembre de 2025 presentamos nuestra instalación On Blank Pages en Xi’an, China, dentro de la primera edición del Chang’an International Light Festival, comisariado por WAVELENGTH y organizado en el complejo Xi’an MixC.

La pieza se sitúa en el acceso principal del recinto, bajo una pasarela peatonal, frente al elemento arquitectónico conocido como “Tree of Life”. En este contexto urbano, la instalación adopta la forma de una estructura circular monumental de 10 metros de diámetro y 4 metros de altura, completamente recubierta por miles de cuadernos e iluminada desde el interior. La obra funciona como un muro de luz y palabras: una superficie colectiva donde el público puede escribir, leer y transformar la pieza con sus propias aportaciones.

El espacio que la acoge está dominado por una arquitectura contemporánea y futurista, caracterizada por grandes escalas, superficies metálicas y reflejos tecnológicos. Frente a ese entorno, la instalación introduce un material humilde y cotidiano: el papel. La delicadeza de los cuadernos, su fragilidad y su dimensión manual establecen un diálogo con la solidez del lugar. En ese contraste, la obra encuentra su sentido: lo vulnerable y lo íntimo irrumpen en un paisaje dominado por lo monumental.

El hecho de estar situada en un espacio cubierto intensifica la experiencia visual. La luz que emerge desde el interior de la estructura se concentra y adquiere una presencia casi física. El techo del puente, con sus superficies reflectantes, actúa como un espejo suspendido que duplica la instalación. Las páginas iluminadas se reflejan sobre nuestras cabezas, multiplicando la imagen de los cuadernos y ampliando la presencia de la obra. El espacio se convierte así en una cámara de luz y papel, donde la instalación parece expandirse más allá de su propia estructura.

La participación del público se despliega de manera continua y abierta. Los visitantes se detienen, leen los mensajes escritos por otros y añaden sus propias palabras. Con el paso del tiempo, las intervenciones se acumulan y la superficie de la obra se vuelve más densa, más compleja y más humana. Cada página escrita deja una huella visible, transformando la instalación en un archivo colectivo en permanente construcción.

A lo largo de los meses de exhibición, la obra evoluciona de forma orgánica: el movimiento de las páginas, la luz interior y la interacción constante del público convierten la estructura en un organismo vivo, siempre cambiante, siempre en crecimiento. La pieza no es un objeto cerrado, sino un proceso: un espacio de encuentro, memoria y expresión compartida.

En hojas blancas es un proyecto que hemos realizado en diferentes ciudades y contextos del mundo. La versión de Xi’an destaca por su escala, por la duración de la exhibición, por la intensidad de la participación pública y por el diálogo entre la fragilidad del papel y la potencia arquitectónica del entorno. En este contexto, miles de páginas ordinarias adquieren juntas una dimensión extraordinaria.
