In 2019, we created Let’s Go Fetch Water! in Washington, D.C., a waterfall of illuminated buckets addressing the universal right to drinking water. We chose an everyday object used in many places to collect and carry the water needed to live. A simple container that holds the effort of those who must fetch water every day to supply their homes.

For those of us accustomed to turning on a tap, it is difficult to imagine what it can take to obtain a bucket of water. Elsewhere, that same act requires walking, waiting, filling containers and making the journey home carrying them. A journey repeated day after day, consuming time, exhausting the body and shaping daily life. Work that frequently falls to women.

The value of water becomes very tangible when you have to carry it. Every litre has weight; every drop spilled means losing part of the effort it took to collect it. The water brought home must be shared between needs that cannot wait: drinking, cooking, washing and caring for others. Scarcity forces people to make choices and go without.

In the original installation, the buckets received and distributed the water, passing it slowly from one to another. This journey allowed us to draw attention to something that often goes unnoticed: everything that must happen for water to reach us.

The initial sketches also included an ornamental fountain. We are now returning to that possibility, developing new compositions using the same element: the bucket used to fetch water.

We are interested in bringing this modest object into the language of the fountains that decorate our cities. Building columns, stepped volumes or large walls of water, introducing into these forms associated with abundance a container that, elsewhere, represents its absence and the work required to obtain it.

The repetition of the buckets makes that accumulated effort visible. Each can hold a small amount; together, they occupy an enormous space. Water passes from one container to the next, depending on each being carefully positioned to continue its journey. We want this movement to encourage people to look closely, listen and recognise its value.

The buckets, whole and all of the same model, are arranged on an internal structure and tilted to receive water from the level above and pass it to the next. A freestanding pool collects the falling water and returns it to a closed circuit, reducing consumption. Internal lighting reveals the containers and follows the water’s journey at night.

The proposal can take different forms and dimensions according to the space and available resources. It retains a modular construction using ordinary materials and components that can be dismantled, repaired and used again.

A fountain that invites us to pause before water and remember that having it close at hand, clean and sufficient, should be an everyday right for everyone.
