Street heartbeats / Latidos urbanos

Last August, we travelled to Tartu, Estonia, to carry out an installation during Urbanfestival UIT. We wanted to visually and poetically represent the vitality of the city’s heartbeat.

To make this happen we made 1,000 hearts from simple objects such as bags, water, food colouring and adhesive tape. We also included portraits of residents taken by local photographers over several weeks,.

We filled the bags with water dyed a dramatic red colour and sealed them leaving the illuminated portraits on view. In order to achieve an organic form, we used adhesive tape and modelled each of the organs one by one. We then hung them from elastic tapes.

The place chosen for the intervention was A park next to the city’s main square which is often visited by youngsters during both day and night. We wove a structure between the trees which allowed us to hang all the elements without harming the trees.

For 15 days, people visited the installation going through corridors full of hearts with faces. Many tried to find images of themselves but found, above all, acquaintances and friends. We, who also partook with our own portraits, couldn’t find our portraits no matter how carefully we searched. That must mean something! However, we had a great time just looking at the 1,000s of beautiful faces of the Tartu citizens that had offered to collaborate.

Once the intervention had finished, it was dismantled, packed up, the materials recycled and the place left just as we found it, without a trace of our visit. We hope some of the faces who so kindly participated, recovered the heart which they lent us during the time our piece was up.

We want to thank Kadri, Marie and her family. This huge and complex intervention would not have been possible without their efforts. A big thank you also to all our friends who volunteered to help, motivated only by the desire to work collaboratively on an artistic project that everyone would be free to enjoy.
