Red crosses on a green graveyard / Cruces rojas sobre cementerio verde

Our dear mayor has set her mind on leaving Madrid without many of its most emblematic trees. We take this decision as an attempt to get rid of a tiny public hazard, which has come about after many years of complete idleness on the part of Madrid’s city hall as regards the city’s green areas.

As the next municipal election is just two months away and the current city’s mayor is politically doomed, it seems quite convenient to put all the responsibility for such outrage on her shoulders, thus acquitting the next candidate of all blame who, on the other hand, will most likely say during her campaign that such massive logging was her predecessor’s mistake so she cannot hold herself accountable for it.

Be it as it may, 1,439 trees are going to be chopped down all over Madrid, an event which has already materialized in the Prado-Recoletos axis. They started in Easter as Madrid was empty. They carried out the work with such diligence as we have never seen before from our municipal services. In no time, they cut and removed 297 centennial trees from this main city axis and now they are pulling out the remains of the mutilated trunks so there will be no trace left of them in a few days. Luckily, photographer Jose Manuel Ballester has left us a quite eloquent record of it.

Outraged at our local politicians, as usual, we headed out with our lights last Thursday night to carry out an intervention which shall draw the attention of night dwellers to the scarce remains of the massacre.

We used 1,000 red fluorescent sticks to make the crosses with which we built small funeral altars all along the Recoletos Axis. We intervened around 20 cut trees some of which still had part of their trunk; the others had completely disappeared so we just found the fresh soil that disguised the empty space left by their majestic roots.

While we were working, we noticed an unusual number of police patrolling nonstop. This sensation was enhanced by the shocking presence of helicopters that flew the area creating an oppressive, unsettling atmosphere.

With this modest intervention, that we have called Red crosses on a green graveyard, we want to contribute to  raising awareness as regards such an irresponsible act which will go unpunished even though it is a dangerous attack against the city’s landscape. This is added to a long list of attacks against public property carried out by the City Hall following a scorched earth scheme prior to the election. The idea: to make it hard for those coming into office and leave public property privatized and strategically distributed at a cheap price.

Many thanks to our dear friends  MariBlu, Montaña, Pablo, and Alex for their great, generous help.
