Last September we went to Besançon (France) invited by the Lux festival which asked us to carry out Radioactive Control – an old, dear piece produced in 2011 for the Dockville Festival in Hamburg.
Althouth 4 years have already passed since we first conceived it – shocked by Fukushima’s dramatic leak – it looks like nothing has changed at all – quite on the contrary, the use of nuclear energy is on the rise. So our past claims are still current, especially in France, the second largest producer of nuclear power in the world in terms of volume after the United States – or the first, if this is production is compared to the number of inhabitants.
Besides, 2015 marks the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, while the first cancer cases directly connected with Fukushima’s leak have been diagnosed. In spite of all this, the Japanese government still recommends nuclear energy against climate change and keeps 54 active reactors in its 17 nuclear plants.
For this and many other reasons, we thought it was appropriate to give life again to our menacing army of radiactive creatures and place it in the vicinity of the Lux festival – a festival that is all about light, science and art.
The army counted on 150 soldiers which were handcrafted with the help of many volunteers using poor quality materials assembled by hand which were later recycled after the event.
During the 4 days of the festival, our luminous figures martially marched propelled by the wind. And, though they offered a much more dramatic spectacle at night, they also interacted with all those who visited the event during the day.
Several institutions made this work possible: the Université de Franche-Comté, which invited us and helped us with a provision of volunteers; La Grosse Entreprise, that produced the piece; and the Bien Urbain team, who recommended us and helped us throughout all the stages of the project.
Special thanks to Laura, David, Chloé, Emilie, Julie, Claire, Céline, Eloise, Gabrielle, Agathe and all the people that stopped by the workshop to lend us a hand; many thanks also Stop Nucléaire Besançon which, besides working, gave us the heads-up as to what is going on in France. This piece took many hours of communal work in the best company.

El pasado mes de septiembre estuvimos en Besançon, Francia, invitados por el festival Lux que nos propuso llevar a cabo Control Radiactivo una antigua y querida pieza, producida en el 2011 para el Festival Dockville de Hamburgo.
A pesar de que han pasado ya 4 años desde que la concebimos, impresionados por el dramático escape de Fukushima, parece que nada ha cambiado, muy al contrario, la tendencia al uso de energía nuclear sigue en aumento, con lo que nuestras pasadas reivindicaciones siguen plenamente vigentes, sobre todo en Francia, país que constituye el segundo productor de electricidad nuclear más importante en el mundo en términos de volumen, después de Estados Unidos, y el primero si se compara esta producción por número de habitantes.
En el 2015 además se han cumplido 70 años de los bombardeos de Hiroshima y Nagasaki y han sido diagnosticados los primeros casos de cáncer directamente relacionados con el escape de Fukushima. A pesar de todo esto, el gobierno de Japón recomienda el uso de la energía nuclear contra el cambio climático y mantiene activos 54 reactores en sus 17 plantas nucleares.
Por estas y otras muchas razones, nos pareció apropiado volver a dar vida a nuestro amenazador ejercito de seres radiactivos y situarlo en las inmediaciones de Lux, festival que se habla de luz, ciencia y arte.
Esta vez el ejercito contó con 150 soldados, creados con la ayuda de muchos voluntarios de manera artesanal, usando modestos materiales ensamblados a mano, que después del evento se reciclaron para otros usos.
Nuestras luminosas figuras, marcharon marcialmente, movidas por el viento durante los 4 días que duró el festival y aunque de noche ofrecían un espectáculo mucho mas dramático, también interactuaron con quienes visitaban el evento en horario diurno.
Varias instituciones hicieron posible este trabajo, la Université de Franche-Comté, que nos invitó y proporcionó la ayuda de voluntarios, a La Grosse Entreprise que produjo la pieza y el equipo de Bien Urbain que nos recomendaron y nos ayudó en todas las fases del proyecto.
Gracias especiales a Laura, David, Chloé, Emilie, Julie, Claire, Céline, Eloise, Gabrielle, Agathe y el resto de personas que pasaron por el taller a echarnos una mano, también a la asociación antinuclear de Stop Nucléaire Besançon, que además de trabajar, nos puso al corriente de lo que pasa en Francia. Fueron muchas horas de trabajo conjunto bien hecho y en la mejor de las compañías.
