«Marcha Negra» de luz / “The Black March” of light

These last few months, we have spent  time outside of Spain, working and without much time to stay informed about the disastrous state which our beloved country was in, but one of the references that we have followed with the most interest has been the course of events of the Black March in which more than 200 coal miners from the north of Spain, on foot for 400 km, have arrived in Madrid to present their claims to the government of the nation.

The very powerful images of their difficult trip, lighting the way with their head lamps, has given us a certain hope hope, in addition to serving as an inspiration for our work with light.

Since we came back home, we have been thinking about the best way in which we could approach and receive them and make them feel our respect and admiration.

Finally yesterday, the 10th of June, at 10 p.m., we were awaiting them, carrying 200 head lamps that we passed out among friends, family and companions, who had congregated to receive them.

The lamps, were a soft red color, given that our intention was to accompany them, not to remove any of the importance of these yellowish head lamps, with which they enter the darkness of the mine every day.

While in the first few minutes of the reception, our timid lights had some presence on the scene, they were quickly diminished by the thousands of people, who like us, came to take part, bearing their own light of welcome.

As well, the massive nighttime march, passed through the centre of the city, filled with police, amid the people’s shouts, the admiration, the celebration, the lights, the chants, the tears and the thanks.

Our dear friend, Lola Martínez, in addition to photographing the event, created an impressive report that she generously gave us to illustrate what happened on this unforgettable night.

Thanks to Lola and also Alex, Nico and Efi who helped us with the set-up and accompanied us during the whole route.

But, above all, thanks to those 400 miners that brought us the most moving intervention with light that we have ever seen.
