.Last October we were invited by EXMURO Arts Publics to participate in the Passages Insolites Festival in Quebec, with our piece Literature vs Traffic, which we have already performed in many cities around the world.
The idea of this piece has not changed since the first time we carried it out:
“We want literature to take over the streets and to become the conqueror of all public places, offering passersby a traffic-free area that will, for a few hours, surrender to the humble might of the written word.
Thus, a place in the city usually dedicated to speed, pollution, and noise, shall turn, for one night, into a place of peace, quiet, and coexistence, lighted by the soft dim light issued from the book pages.
The books will be available for those who want to take them, so the installation will recycle itself and will last as long as its users decide to make it disappear.
Cars will eventually re-claim their place. However, those who walked by this place that night will hold the memory of how once books took over it, so they will have a better relationship with it.”
To raise the 11,000 books needed to complete the piece, we relied on organisations specialising in used books, libraries and bookshops. Local residents also contributed, donating books that were collected in various mailboxes set up throughout the city.
We also relied on more than 50 volunteers, citizens interested in literature and art in general, who were contacted through a public call. They helped us in the whole process of assembling and placing the books.
The piece was installed for 1 day and a local literature festival organised a participatory literary open mic, in which members of the public were invited to read fragments of books from the installation, or books that they themselves had brought, as well as texts of their own creation.
During the evening, visitors were invited to go inside the piece, enjoy the books and of course take the ones they were most interested in.
Those that were left without owners at the end of the night, were collected and kept by the organisation to give them new uses and the street returned to its normal activities the next day as if nothing had happened.

El pasado mes de octubre fuimos invitados por EXMURO Arts Publics, a participar en el Festival Passages Insolites de Quebec. con nuestra pieza Literatura vs Tráfico, que ya hemos llevado a cabo en muchas ciudades del mundo.
La idea de la pieza no ha variado desde la primera vez que la llevamos a cabo:
«Queremos que la literatura se apodere de las calles y se convierta en conquistadora del espacio público, ofreciendo gratuitamente a los que pasean, un lugar libre de tráfico, que por unas horas, sucumbirá al modesto poder de la palabra escrita.
Así, un espacio urbano reservado convencionalmente a la velocidad, la contaminación y el ruido, se convertirá por una noche en un lugar para la tranquilidad, el relax y la convivencia. Iluminado por una suave luz difusa de las páginas iluminadas.
Los libros, quedarán a disposición del que se los quiera llevar, con lo que la instalación se autoreciclará y tendrá la duración que los usuarios quieran que tarde en desaparecer.
Al final, los coches volverán a ocupar su sitio, pero para muchos de los que pasaron por allí esa noche, el recuerdo de que una vez los libros ocuparon este mismo espacio, hará que su relación con este entorno mejore».
Para conseguir los 11.000 libros necesarios para lleva a cabo la pieza, contamos con organizaciones especializadas en libros usados, bibliotecas y librerías. Los residentes locales también contribuyeron, donando libros que se recogieron en varios buzones instalados por toda la ciudad.
Contamos también con más de 50 voluntarios, ciudadanos interesados en la literatura y el arte en general y que fueron contactados a través de una convocatoria pública. Ellos nos ayudaron en todo el proceso de montaje y colocación de los libros.
La pieza estuvo instalada 1 día y un festival de literatura local organizó un micrófono abierto literario participativo, en el que se invitó a los miembros del público a leer fragmentos de libros de la instalación, o de libros que ellos mismos trajeron, ademas se leyeron textos de creación propia.
Durante la noche se invitó a los visitantes a internarse en la pieza, disfrutar de los libros y por supuesto llevarse los que más les interesaran.
Los que quedaron sin dueño al final de la noche, fueron recogidos y guardados por la organización para darles nuevos usos y la calle volvió a sus actividades normales al día siguiente como si nada hubiera pasado.
Muchísimas gracias a EXMURO por invitarnos a participar en la edición 2023 de Passages Insolites, especialmente a Michelle y Emmanuelle que personalmente se encargaron de que todo saliera tal como lo habíamos pensado.
Por supuesto, agradecimiento total a los voluntarios que generosamente nos cedieron su tiempo y a los amantes de los libros que compartieron con nosotros sus preciados tesoros.
