Bringing recycling closer / Aproximación al reciclaje

El pasado junio visitamos Varsovia, invitados por la Galería Starter, para llevar a cabo nuestra instalación Domingo de reciclaje.

Inscrita en unas jornadas sobre reciclaje que van a desarrollarse durante los próximos meses en la galería, pensamos este proyecto, con la idea de familiarizar a los vecinos, con los colores que internacionalmente se utilizan para separar la basura.

En Varsovia, los habitantes no están obligados a reciclar y los contenedores tampoco están preparados para hacerlo, por lo que este concepto es bastante lejano para la mayoría.

Para llevarlo a cabo utilizamos 1000 bolsas de basura de colores verde, amarillo y azul y sus luces correspondientes y llenamos la plaza con ellas, algunas formando un cielo azul al alcance de la mano, el resto, flotando misteriosamente esparcidas por la plaza.

Muchos vecinos se acercaron a visitar la instalación y la interacción fue sorprendente, los niños jugaban  con las bolsas como si de los más atractivos globos se tratara y los mayores se las llevaban como un precioso regalo.

Al final de la noche la mayoría de las bolsas flotantes, dejaron la plaza para invadir la ciudad con su extraña presencia. Así pues, la instalación se acabó reciclando de manera expontánea.

Esperamos que todos los que se las llevaron, además de reciclar los componentes, aprendieran que en sitios públicos, las bolsas azules se utlizan para reciclar el papel, las amarillas para los envases y las verdes para el vidrio.

Muchas gracias a Marika y a sus compañeras de la galería, por facilitarnos nuestra estancia en la ciudad y ayudarnos en todo momento para que la instalación se llevara a cabo. Sin ellas hubiera sido imposible.

Last June we visited Warsaw, invited by the Galería Starter, to carry out our installation Recycling Sunday.

Included in a number of days regarding recycling that the gallery is going to have in the next few months, we thought of this project, with the idea of familiarizing the citizens with the colors that are internationally used to separate garbage.

In Warsaw, the citizens are not obligated to recycle and the garbage containers are not prepared for it either, meaning that this concept is not commonly known to the majority of the people.

To carry this out we used 1000 garbage bags of the color green, yellow and blue, as well as their corresponding lights and we filled the plaza with them, some forming a blue sky within hand’s reach, the rest floating mysteriously, scattered across the plaza.

Many people came to visit the installation and the interaction was surprising, the children played with the bags as if they were the most attractive balloons and the adults carried them away as if they were precious gifts.

At the end of the night, the floating bags left the plaza to invade the city with their strange presence. Thus the installation finished by recycling itself in a spontaneous manner.

We hope that all those who carried them away, aside from recycling their components, learns that in public places, the blue bags are used to recycle paper, yellow for metal containers and green for glass.
