Sombras malignas / Malignant Shadows

Siempre hemos dicho que en Madrid no hay sombras, ya se encarga el alumbrado público de esconderlas bajo sus excesivos focos, de triste color amarillento.

Así que, como primer reto del 2010, nos propusimos sacar algunas a la calle, pero sin tener que emplear para ello, sofisticados métodos de proyección.

Para realizar nuestras sombras, cogimos prestadas, las maravillosas y nada inocentes siluetas de Kara Walker y las recortamos con sumo cuidado sobre cartulina negra, intentando no perder ninguno de sus maravillosos detalles.

Con ellas construimos 10 móviles de alambre con 6 siluetas cada uno y armados con las más básicas linternas, de esas de toda la vida, nos fuimos a sembrar sobras por las calles de Madrid.

La tarea no resultó nada fácil, ya que sin querer usar métodos de proyección más potentes, en un Madrid tan iluminado, era complicadísimo conseguir más que tímidas apariciones que no se diferenciaban apenas de las manchas y pinturas que ya existían en las paredes.

Después de mucho buscar oscuridad sin dar con ella, no nos quedó más remedio que marchar a los extrarradios, para poder disfrutar de esas paredes blancas y ambiente íntimo, en el que nuestras tímidas siluetas, no sintieran pudor de mostrarse en público.

En un polígono a 20 kms de Madrid, por fin dimos con el lugar adecuado, y en un callejón sin salida, apenas iluminado con dos farolas, sobre el muro de una nave industrial, dejamos por fin nuestra instalación Circo de Sombras un personal homenaje a esas criaturas que pueblan las noches de todo el mundo, menos de Madrid.

Ahora le hemos cogido cariño a estos personajes y queremos seguir poniendo nuestras modestas sombras allí dónde el alumbrado público lo permita.

We have always said that in Madrid there are no shadows, the public street lighting charged with hiding them under their excessive floodlights, of a sad yellowish color.

So, as the first challenge of 2010, we set out to draw some out into the street, but without having to use sophisticated methods of projection to do it.

To make our shadows, we borrowed, the wonderful and bold silhouettes of Kara Walker and we cut them carefully out of black cardstock, trying not to lose any of their wonderful details.

With them we built 10 wire mobiles, each with 6 silhouettes and armed with the most basic lanterns, the everyday type, we went to sow shadows in the streets of Madrid. The task itself was not easy, given that we did not want to use more powerful projection methods, in Madrid already so well lit, it was complicated getting more that timid apparitions that could hardly be differentiated from the stains and paintings that already existed in the walls.

After much searching for darkness without finding it, we had no choice but to go to the suburbs, in order to find those intimate, white walls on which our timid silhouettes, did not feel any modesty at being displayed in public.

In an industrial estate 20 km from Madrid, we finally found the right place, in a dead end street, barely lit by two street lamps, on the wall of an industrial warehouse, we finally set up our installation Circus of Shadows a personal tribute to those creatures that inhabit the night around the world, except for Madrid.

Now we have become attached to these characters and we want to continue putting our modest shadows wherever public lighting permits.
