We are still interested in the street works which cover Madrid with a thick layer of dust, cement debris and tar, diggers, rollers, cranes, and also all kind of street furniture, here and there, and everywhere.

Today we turn our attention to the pipes that protect the electrical wires under the streets. We had already used them before when we found a pile of them in separate groups, and awaiting their final destination in the trenches. Last week, already buried, we reused them as light holders.

This time around, we made an incursion in the street works in Chueca, to be precise in Alberto Figueroa street. We managed to enjoy the sight of several bunches of pipes which stood out of the new asphalted road.

This installation was called Museum of open-air urban sculptures and took place on 9 June in the early morning in Fuencarral street which has become a pedestrian-friendly area.

On that day we discovered that, beyond the works fences, lay a whole world of sculptures, created by the imaginative town council workmen. What was only missing were our lights just to finish them off and turn them into real monuments to public areas under construction.

The photos, as is the custom, are Gustavo Sanabria’s, who also loves staying up late.

Last week, many politicians were preparing to achieve their best results in the European elections.

Like good actors, concerned about how not to fail on their first performance, they spent the previous nights reciting and rehearsing their speeches and so that when the moment came, unexpected mistakes were avoided.

We caught two of them rehearsing. Knowing their role well, their voice pitches, their attrezo and make-up in perfect display… the general rehearsal was about to begin… and in the dressing rooms…one last moment of intimacy in front of the mirror.

This took place on 3rd June, we saw it, took photos and have called the report Next Performance: 7th June.

What a shame nobody else allowed us to immortalize them.

The seasoned photographer was Gustavo Sanabria, and we were behind the lights.

On 21st May the project was massacred by the Madrid Town Council diggers, which exercised its unlimited power and an unseen violence, and turned it into irrelevant mounds of waste. They were later carried away with the rubbish, the plants, animals, minerals, dreams and work from an empty plot in the centre of the city.

This plot of land had been closed and forsaken for 30 years and at that moment it was being used by neighbours, as a place where nature could be enjoyed in contrast with the surrounding grey and tough area in the Lavapies district.

There we went with our 30 miniature diggers to render our own heartfelt lighting tribute, by way of a parade, to this place which has been an example of neighbourhood self-management
and which now will become a barren, dry and empty plot, more appropriate for storing building materials.

The intervention was called We Are Massacring, We Are Sorry for any Inconvenience, and took place on the early morning on 26th May on the plot’s wall in Dr. Fourquet street, 24, previously known as This is a Square by neighbours.

The photos are Gustavo Sanabria´s, who else´s?

Pescando luz

From 17 to 21 June we will be in Maubeuge, France, during The Folies Festival 2009. We will share the streets sites with a lot of musicians, Le manege theatre company and circus performances.

We will make an instalation on a principal bridge of the city with rods and gold cages with light, of course.

We hope to show you soon the pictures of the real installation but at the moment we give you an appetitive made with an illustration that was painted by Marta Menacho.

We would really have liked to cover Madrid streets with hung clothes.

We have already presented this project for Open Madrid 2010 and in this we imagined the possibility to hang all our lighting clothes on Paseo de la Castellana, but It wasn´t possible.

We liked this idea so much that we are planning on hanging the same lighting clothes in the New York Guggenheim museum. This time for a paper project that will be exhibited next February 2010 in the exhibition Contemplating de Void.

Finnaly we couldn´t resist the temptation and with not many resources we carried it out at small scale. We choose Pez Street where we installed a modest clothes lines.

The night was so fun, we met a lot of neighbours and visitors who came from the pubs and they used our installation, making their own photos and also giving us white clothes that they were wearing at that moment and we were able to install a 25-metres long line in the street.

Test of hanging clothes in the inhabited city is what we called this first outline lighting installation we carried out on 19 May in the centre of Madrid. We hope we can install it in other deshumanize areas of the city, in the near future.

Thanks to Juan Divassón and Andrés Casaseca for their help to the clothes lines.
