The piece Hojas por Hojas (a play on words in Spanish) talks about the way. in which we are manipulating nature to turn it into a stage quite creatively designed with technology in order to satisfy the taste of an increasingly infantilized consumer.

As if it were a theme park, nature is presented to us as a carefully produced spectacle for which we pay a ticket to enjoy it comfortably, without any adverse conditions or seasonal changes.

In order to carry it out, nothing better than the early fall season where nature is transforming herself and losing her beauty as trees shed their leaves.

We used the branches that were already bare to clothe them with subtly lighted white paper sheets (‘hojas’ as termed in Spanish) attached with clamps. This gave the trees a ghostly unsettling appearance as they lost their natural form to become a pixelated version of themselves.

As the fall season advances, the lighted paper will gain presence and the natural features will almost completely fade away leaving only what has been produced. At this point, we will have achieved a visual spectacle worthy of a modern theme park where everything that cannot be controlled or is deciduous is replaced with elements that have been produced and validated to the standards of the consumer society where we have to live.

However, the light will die out eventually and the material will wear out as well. The artificial objects will lose their luster and will leave us with a shabby view which may make us reflect on whether art imitates life or life ends up imitating art …

The setting for our piece was the garden of the lovely Instituto Cervantes in Frankfurt. Our piece will stay there until all the natural leaves fall and the artificial ones expire. We expect them to lastuntil February.

We employed more than 4,000 white sheets of unbreakable stone paper and intervened a large tree and 2 smaller trees.

We want to thank our friends from the Instituto Cervantes, and Eva and María José whose effortwas essential to materialize our idea. Many thanks to Ferrando, Efraín, Laura and all the volunteers who stayed with us during setup. It has been a pleasure to be part of the life of this institution during the 10 days it took us to set it up.
