Politicians under surveillance / Políticos bajo videovigilancia

Los políticos están bajo sospecha, no sólo por parte de los ciudadanos que observamos estupefactos sus maniobras para intentar atajar una crisis de la que no paran de echarnos las culpas.

Pero en realidad, los que de verdad les mantienen bajo estricta vigilancia, son los mercados, cargados de un poder ilimitado que consigue derrocar gobiernos legítimos, para imponer en su lugar una raza de tecnócratas de pasado sospechoso, al servicio de la crisis.

Pensando en éstas cosas, nos echamos a las calles de Madrid, el día 19 de noviembre, jornada de reflexión de las pasadas elecciones generales, para hacer un simulacro de vigilancia a los políticos, con la intención de generar debate o simplemente un pensamiento entre la gente que paseaba por las calles de vuelta a casa.

Para nuestra instalación Políticos bajo videovigilancia, llevamos con nosotros 75 cámaras de seguridad falsas, de las que detectan el movimiento y llevan una luz roja intermitente y las fuimos colocando en los soportes publicitarios empleados por los partidos para hacer campaña electoral, observando de cerca las caras retocadas para la foto, de los políticos electos.

Fue una interesante noche y como siempre, la gente nos preguntó… esperamos haber logrado hacerles reflexionar durante un momento sobre esta alarmante situación de acoso a la democracia.

Politicians are under suspicion, not only by the citizens that we see as being astonished by their manouevers to curb a crisis for which they do not stop trying to put the blame on us.

But in reality, those that truly keep them under strict surveillance, are the markets, loaded with unlimited power which allows them to overthrow legitimate governments, imposing in their place a race of technocrats of suspect past, in the service of the crisis.

Thinking about these things, we took to the streets of Madrid, on the 19^th of November, a day of reflection before the general elections, in order to present a simulation of the surveillance of politicians, with the aim of generating debate or simply a thought among the people who strolled through the streets on their way back home.

For our installation Politicians under video surveillance, we carried 75 fake security cameras with us, of the type which detect movement and possess an intermittent red light and we trained them on the advertising used by the parties in their electoral campaigns, observing from close up the faces that were touched up for the photos, of the politicians elect.

It was an interesting night and as always, people asked us… did we hope to have made them reflect for a moment about this alarming situation of the harassment of democracy.
