Hace un par de semanas, Madrid se preparaba para celebrar la Fiesta Nacional Española, que como todos los años y a pesar de la recesión económica, se celebra, con gran boato y despliegue de medios, el 12 de octubre.

Ese señalado día, parecía que no había penas, tampoco crisis, ya que la ciudad lució engalanada con grandes banderas y flores, mientras las fuerzas vivas y los ciudadanos de bien, se vestían con sus mejores galas para presenciar los numerosos desfiles militares, que tratan de recordarnos donde está el poder.

Para que esta insigne celebración tuviera lugar en perfecta armonía y se pudiera transmitir por la televisión estatal sin censura de ningún tipo, previamente hubo que limpiar y esconder algunas cosillas que está pasando en la ciudad, otro tipo de manifestaciones ciudadanas también multitudinarias, aunque menos marciales, que llenan las calles diariamente y no precisamente para festejar…

Nosotros, como buenos ciudadanos que somos, quisimos contribuir al ornato de ese día haciendo limpieza en la calles por las que normalmente transitamos, con la intención de que no quedara nada que afeara tan señalados festejos.

La noche anterior a la celebración, nos echamos a la calle con 20 cubos, que fuimos llenando de agua y detergente y lanzando por una céntrica calle de nuestro barrio, provocando un pequeño río con olas, que arrastraba lo que encontraba a su paso, hasta hacerlo caer por las alcantarillas.

Lo que simbólicamente dejamos en la calle, a merced de la corriente, fue un flota de pequeños barcos de papel que construimos con el programa electoral del partido que actualmente nos gobierna

La instalación se llamó Flota de promesas electorales incumplidas y para llevarla a cabo usamos 214 barcos iluminados, fabricados en hojas impresas, con la totalidad de un programa político titulado «Lo que España Necesita» y en el que encontramos, cientos de bonitas promesas que, nos parece, nunca ha habido intención de cumplir.

Nuestro pequeño ejercito naval, acabó convertido en una sencilla metáfora, de papel mojado e ilegible, que una vez terminada la instalación recogimos y depositamos en contenedores de papel.

Ojalá los programas con los que se ganan elecciones, hubiera que cumplirlos…

A couple of weeks ago, Madrid prepared to celebrate the Fiesta Nacional Española, which as every year, and despite the economic recession, is celebrated with great pomp and deployment of media, on the 12th of October.

On that day, it seemed there were no problems, nor crisis, as the city shone adorned with large flags and flowers, while the living forces and good citizens, dressed themselves in their best finery to witness the many military parades, trying to remind us where the power is.

In order that this outstanding celebration could take place in perfect harmony and could be presented on state television without any censorship of any kind, they previously had to clean up and hide some little things that are happening in the city, other types of public demonstrations, also multitudinous, although less martial, which fill the streets daily and not exactly to celebrate…

We, like good citizens that we are, wanted to contribute to the beautification of that day by cleaning the streets that we normally pass through, with the intention that there would be nothing left to debase such remarkable celebrations.

The night before the celebration, we went out into the street with 20 buckets, which we filled with water and detergent and threw onto a central street in our neighborhood, creating a small river with waves, that dragged along anything in its path, until it fell into the sewers.

What we symbolically left in the street, at the mercy of the current, was a fleet of small paper boats that we built with the electoral program of the party that currently governs us.

The installation was called Fleet of unfilfilled election promises and to carry it out we used 214 illuminated boats, manufactured of printed pages, with the entire political program entitled «What Spain needs» in which you can find hundreds of beautiful promises, which it seems to us, there has never been any intention to fulfill.

Our small naval fleet, ended up becoming a simple metaphor, of wet and unreadable paper, that, once the installation was complete we picked up and deposited into paper recycling containers.

Many thanks to our friends Cris, Alex and Aurora who helped us with the preparations and the installation and to Lola Martínez and Gustavo Sanabria who documented the whole process. We appreciate these two personal views at the same time.

If only programs with which elections are won had to be fulfilled…

Árbol de navidad consumista / Consumerist Christmas Tree

Nos pidieron, para la ciudad de Buenos Aires, una propuesta de instalación navideña que ayudara a concienciar a la población del excesivo uso de las bolsas de plástico y las consecuencias que este consumo tiene para la medio ambiente.

Acabábamos de llevar a cabo una instalación, con la misma premisa, para el museo Gewerbemuseum de Winthertur y decidimos que sería interesante desarrollar algo más este concepto, en una instalación de mayor envergadura.

Pensamos en un gran árbol de navidad, construido con bolsas utilizadas durante el periodo previo a las Navidades, fechas en la que se incrementa considerablemente su uso. Ibamos a pedir la colaboración de los bonaerenses, cambiando sus mas recientes bolsas de plastico por otras más ecologicas.

Para darle forma, montaríamos una gran estructura de malla metálica en forma de cono, en la que irían sujetas tiras de luz que la repartirían de manera homogénea por toda la superficie del cono.

Sujetas a la malla metálica, cubriéndola en toda su totalidad, miles de bolsas infladas dejarían pasar la luz, convirtiendo la totalidad del cono en una superficie brillante y colorista llena de referencias publicitarias.

Una puerta, permitiría el acceso al interior del árbol en el que se habilitaria un espacio íntimo donde sentarse a visionar todo tipo de proyecciones y documentación relacionada con de la producción y consumo de plásticos.

Ojalá pronto podamos llevar a cabo esta intalación.

We were asked for a proposal, by the city of Buenos Aires, for a Christmas installation that would help to raise awareness concerning the excessive use of plastic bags and the consequences that this consumption has for the environment.

We just carried out an installation, with the same premise, for the Gewerbemuseum museum in Winthertur and decided that it would be interesting to develop this concept further, with an installation of greater scope.

We thought about a grand Christmas tree, built of the bags used during the period prior to Christmas, the dates in which their use dramatically increases. We were going to ask for the cooperation of the citizens of Buenos Aires, exchanging their most recent plastic bags for other more ecological ones.

To give it shape, we would construct a large structure of metal mesh in the shape of a cone, upon which strips of lights would be attached that would be spread evenly over the whole surface of the cone.

Attached to the metal mesh, covering it in its entirety, would be thousands of inflated bags which would let the light pass through, converting the entire cone into a luminuous and colorful surface filled with advertising.

A door, would allow access to the interior of the tree in which would create a cozy space where one could sit and watch all kinds of projections and documentation related to the production and consumption of plastics.

Hopefully soon we will be able to carry out this installation.

Estos son algunos bocetos que presentamos para definir nuestra instalación «Literatura vs Tráfico» en Melbourne.

Como veréis, en un principio contemplamos la posibilidad de colgar muchos de los libros a modo de lámparas.

Al final los colocamos todos en el suelo y desde luego, viendo el resultado, fue la mejor solución.

These are some sketches that we presented to define our installation «Literature vs Traffic» in Melbourne.

As you can see, in the beginning we contemplated the possibility of hanging many of the books from lights.

In the end we put them all on the ground and of course, seeing the result, it was the best solution.

Nuestros amigos de 862productions nos han hecho este increíble regalo de nuestra estancia en Melbourne.

En el video se recrea cómo trabajamos en los libros, como la instalación fue creciendo y como otros artistas la utilizaron a modo de escenario para sus propios trabajos. Y sobre todo, cómo la gente la disfrutó.

Gracias a Nick y Lee por el buen trabajo con la cámara, a Tony Yap, Yumi Umiumare y sus actores por esa extraordinaria performance, a los que colaboraron de manera generosa para que todo saliera bien y sobre todo al público que nos ayudó a que la instalación se convirtiera en un acontecimiento compartido e inlvidable.

The video recreates the work we did with the books, the way the installation grew and how the other artists used it as a setting for their own work. And above all, how much the people enjoyed it.

Literature versus Traffic in Melbourne / Literatura versus tráfico en Melbourne

El pasado mes de junio, nos trasladamos a Melbourne para llevar a cabo una gran instalación, la más grande hasta ahora para nosotros, dentro del festival Light in Winter.

La temática elegida por el festival para este año ha sido «la lectura», por lo que nos pidieron que lleváramos a cabo Literature vs Traffic, una pieza que ya habíamos instalado en New York de forma subversiva y que nos ofrecían la oportunidad de ampliar y hacer crecer durante un mes.

Hasta la otra punta del mundo nos fuimos, pasando del soleado verano madrileño a un suave y lluvioso invierno, con la romántica intención de convertir la moderna y fría arquitectura de Federation Square, en un espacio acogedor, humano e íntimo, que invitara a lectura y al recogimiento.

Contábamos para ello con 10.000 libros desechados por bibliotecas públicas por considerarlos obsoletos, que el Ejercito de Salvación se encargó de recoger y donarnos altruístamente, por supuesto, también teníamos nuestras luces y la ayuda de un montón de amigos con la que convivimos durante un mes en los trabajos de ensamblaje e instalación.

¿El fin de esta pieza?, él mismo que el de la primera vez que la llevamos a cabo, que un río de libros desbordara el espacio físico de los peatones y se instalara en el asignado a los coches, robando un preciado suelo al abundante tráfico de la zona, en un gesto simbólico en el que la literatura se apoderara de las calles y se convirtiera en conquistadora del espacio público, ofreciendo a los ciudadanos, un lugar (no tan grande como nos hubiera gustado) en el que el tráfico se retirara para ceder terreno al modesto poder de la palabra escrita.

Conseguimos, después de una dura batalla contra la climatología, cambiar el aspecto de la plaza, progresivamente durante un mes, conquistamos terreno hasta que la noche del 30 de junio, un carril de la transitada Flinders Street pasó a ser una sala de lectura iluminada por una tenue luz que palidecía bajo las potentes pantallas de leds instaladas en la plaza.

Nuestra pieza sirvió de telón de fondo para muchas cosas que pasaron por allí esos días, por supuesto, fue el escenario para multitud de fotos de los curiosos y visitantes, además estuvo acompañando a muchas otras piezas instaladas durante el festival de luz, y para conmemorar el solsticio de verano fue utilizada como escenografía de la pieza de danza y performance Walking Through Words, dirigida por Tony Yap y Yumi Umiumare en colaboración con varias comunidades de la ciudad.

La noche final, el río desbordado de libros, fue ofrecido a los visitantes que se tomaron su tiempo eligiendo entre los miles instalados los más interesantes para llevarse a casa. Además 9 artistas de la compañía de Yumi, llevaron a cabo una improvisada y mágica performance que terminó en una donación de libros a los ocupantes de los coches que circulaban por los alrededores y que estupefactos abrían las ventanillas para hacerse con tan misteriosos presentes.

Aunque ha sido una instalación complicada y con un planteamiento bastante diferente a las modestas y efímeras que solemos llevar a cabo, el balance final ha sido muy positivo, sobres todo por todas las personas que hemos conocido y que nos han ayudado a que saliera adelante.

No queremos dejar de dar las gracias a todos los voluntarios que generosamente nos donaron su tiempo, a la gente de Fedsquare que nos allanó los obstáculos y que participó activamente en la construcción de la pieza, a los colegas de Guerrilla Lighting que nos acompañaron con sus linternas, a Fred Kroh que nos cedió gran cantidad de material fotográfico, a los artistas que embellecieron la instalación con sus performances… Unas especialísimas gracias a Alfonso Ruano que se fue con nosotros desde España y sin el cual definitivamente nada de esto hubiera sido posible, gracias amigo y por supuesto a nuestra querida Cristina Curiel, que consiguió que todo funcionara a la perfección.

No nos vamos a olvidar de todo ese tiempo, muchísimo, que hemos pasado mirando libros, pasando hojas y descubriendo secretos olvidados de gente que no conocemos, y preguntándonos cual fue el criterio que siguieron los bibliotecarios para expulsarlos de sus estanterías, algunos nos parecieron verdaderamente impresionantes.

Toda una experiencia esta gran instalación, hemos aprendido muchas cosas interesantes, esperamos que no se nos olviden…

In June, we went to Melbourne to carry out a large-scale installation, our largest so far, at the Light in Winter festival.

This year’s theme was «reading», for this reason they asked us to recreate Literature vs Traffic, a piece that we had previously installed in New York in a subversive manner and which they now offered us the opportunity to expand it and make it grow for a month.

To the other side of the world we went, going from the sunny summer in Madrid to a mild and rainy winter, with the romantic intention of converting the modern and somewhat cold architecture of Federation Square, into a cozy, human and intimate space, which encouraged reading and tranquility.

We had 10,000 books discarded by public libraries because they considered them to be obsolete, that the Salvation Army was responsible for collecting and donating them to us, altruistically of course, we also had our lights and the help of a lot of friends with whom we lived for a month doing the work of assembly and installation.

The objective of this piece? The same as the first time that we carried it out, that a river of books overflowing into the physical pedestrian spaces and installed itself in the space allocated to cars, stealing precious space to the dense traffic in the area, in a symbolic gesture in which literature took control of the streets and became the conquerer of the public space, offering the citizens, a space (not as big as we would have liked) in which the traffic withdrew yielding ground to the modest power of the written word.

We managed, after a tough battle against the weather, to change the appearance of the plaza progressively for a month, and that on the night of June 30, a lane of the busy Flinders Street became a space for reading and coexistence, lit by a dim light that paled under the powerful LED displays installed in the plaza.

Our piece served as a backdrop for many things that happened there during these days. Of course, it was the scene for a multitude of photos taken by the curious and visitors, in addition it was accompanied by many other pieces installed during the festival of light, and to commemorate the el summer solstice it was used as the stage for the dance and performance piece Walking Through Words, directed by Tony Yap and Yumi Umiumare in collaboration with various communities from the city.

On the final night, the overflowing river of books, was offered to the visitors who took their time choosing the most interesting to take home from the thousands installed there. In addition 9 artists from the company Yumi, conducted an impromptu and magical performance that ended in a donation of books to the occupants of the cars that were circulating in the vicinity, who, stupefied opened their windows to receive these mysterious presents.

Although it was a complicated installation, with a quite different approach to the modest and ephemeral ones that we usually carry out, the final balance was very positive, above all because of the people we met and that helped us to pull it off.

We want to give thanks for all their help, to all the volunteers that generously donated their time to us, to the people from Fedsquare that smoothed out all the obstacles for us and that participated actively in the construction of the piece, to our colleagues from Guerrilla Lighting that accompanied us with their flashlights, to Fred Kroh who gave us a large amount of photographic material, to the artists who embellished the installation with their performances… And special thanks to Alfonso Ruano who went with us from Spain and definitely without whom none of this would have been possible, thanks friend and of course, to our dear Cristina Curiel.

Neither are we going to forget the time that we spent looking at books, flipping through their pages to discover the forgotten secrets of people who do not know, and wondering what the criterion was that the libraries followed to remove them from their shelves, some were truly impressive.

A fantastic experience this grand installation, we learned many interesting things, we hope that we will not forget them…
