Smoke and noise as a form of protest / Humo y ruido como forma de protesta

La noche del 31 de enero nos lanzamos a la calle para «perpetrar» una intervención que llevábamos tiempo queriendo hacer y que esa noche tenía más sentido que nunca.

A esas horas, la gente se había echado a la calle de manera espontánea, para protestar contra la escandalosa corrupción política que había sido destapada por un periódico nacional y que implicaba, con nombres y apellidos, a toda la cúpula del gobierno español.

Mientras las fuerzas vivas andaban entretenidas, intentando «controlar» el orden público en la sede del PP de Madrid, nosotros elegimos una calle céntrica, próxima a la Gran Vía, y allí llevamos a cabo nuestra intervención lumínico/sonora, 25 minutos de protesta entre la niebla.

La acción fue muy sencilla, sólo unas pequeñas bombas de humo caseras, totalmente inofensivas, que colocamos bajo 9 potentísimas farolas, para conseguir que la calle mejor iluminada de la zona, se opacara totalmente, bajo una espesa niebla.

Esta ambientación, propia de una zona post conflicto o de una iglesia en horas de oración, invitaba a quedarse rato observando cómo el humo materializaba los haces de luz de las farolas, dibujando conos imperfectos en el espacio, dentro de los cuales, la niebla evolucionaba en hipnóticos movimientos.

Para mejorar la puesta en escena, el humo logró activar todas las alarmas anti incendios de la Gran Vía que sonaron durante largo rato, contribuyendo de manera perceptible, al malestar general que reinaba en las calles en ese momento.

Y la neblina se expandió por el aire, provocando que toda la zona acabara cubierta de una capa blanquecina que producía en el ánimo, una sensación de pesadez y tristeza, además de extrañeza, ya que el humo y el sonido de las alarmas, no iba acompañado de fuego ni olor a quemado.

Esta pieza nos ha servido además, para ratificarnos en nuestra idea de lo necesario que es para la contaminación de Madrid, una iluminación más tenue y sostenible, en la que la claridad perpetua, deje paso a la noche con sus sombras.

The night of January 31 we took to the street to «perpetrate» an intervention that we’ve wanted to carry out for some time and that night it made more sense than ever.

At that time, people had taken to the streets in a spontaneous manner, to protest against the scandalous political corruption that had been uncovered by a national newspaper and which implicated, with names and surnames, the entire leadership of the Spanish government.

While the powers that be were entertained, trying to «control» public order at the headquarters of the PP of Madrid, we chose a central street, close to Gran Via, and there we carried out our light/sound, 25 Minutes of protest in the smoke.

The action was very simple, only a few completely harmless, small, homemade smoke bombs that are placed under 9 powerful lampposts, in order to totally obscure the most illuminated street in the area, under a dense cloud of smoke.

This environment, belonging to a post-conflict zone or of a church during the hours of mass, was inviting to stay and watch as the smoke materialized the beams of light from the lampposts, forming imperfect cones in space, within which the smoke evolved in hypnotic movements.

To improve the scene being staged, the smoke managed to activate all the fire alarms on Gran Via which rang for a long time, contributing significantly to the general malaise that reigned on the streets at that time.

And the smoke carried through the air, causing the entire area to eventually be covered with a whitish layer that produced a feeling of heaviness and sadness, as well as being very strange because the smoke and the sound of the alarms were not accompanied either by fire or a burning smell.

This piece also served, in addition, to ratify for us our idea of just how necessary a softer, more sustainable lighting is for the contamination in Madrid, , which brilliance perpetuates, lets the night pass with its shadows.

Packaged river occupying the street / Río envasado que ocupa la calle

El pasado mes de septiembre estuvimos en Caracas invitados por la Embajada Española para trabajar en Por en Medio de la Calle, un festival urbano que celebra cada año la importancia del espacio público como lugar de convivencia ciudadana y que tuvo lugar el 1 de septiembre en el barrio de Chacao en Caracas.

Como es habitual, al plantearnos la instalación, intentamos introducir una pequeña reflexión sobre algún tema que nos preocupa, en este caso no iba a ser menos, y elegimos el agua, uno de nuestros asuntos recurrentes.

Con la pieza Río Portátil, quisimos acercar un río de agua al centro de Caracas, para lo que tuvimos que envasarla y dejarla en reposo, cosa bastante inusual ya que allí, lo que normal es verla desbordarse por las calles cada vez que llueve. Nosotros queríamos pararla por una noche para que la gente pudiera sentarse a contemplar su belleza y quizás, a pensar en el valor de este elemento esencial para la vida y el reto que supone acercarla a los ciudadanos, sobre todo en las grandes urbes.

Para conseguir nuestro río urbano, creamos un particular caudal de agua cristalina empaquetada en 2.000 bolsas transparentes, en cuyo interior, además de luz, incluimos muestras de la vida que en ella habita. Cada bolsa era un pequeño acuario efímero, contenedor de peces y plantas, que gracias a la luz adquiría un valor insospechado.

Al final de la noche, los transeúntes podrán llevarse nuestros pequeños ecosistemas iluminados, convirtiendo el río quieto, en otro que rápidamente circuló por la ciudad, en la mano de los niños y adultos que quisieron llevarlos a sus casas. Otra parte del río se desbordó, para nuestra sorpresa…

Esta pieza no hubiera sido posible sin la ayuda de muchos amigos: nuestros increíbles voluntarios y el Taller de Bicicletas, que estuvieron trabajando y recolectando hierbas con total entrega durante 4 días, para conseguir llenar las bolsas; por supuesto, las queridas María José y Anna, de la Embajada que nos trataron como si estuviéramos en casa y nos ayudaron en todo y mucho más, los organizadores del evento Cultura Cachao y Platanoverde que nos acogieron y ayudaron en la producción con la mayor profesionalidad, también los señores de la cisterna de agua que colaboraron desinteresadamente, y a la gente de la calle que, de manera espontánea, se ofreció para poder terminar en el menor tiempo. A todos queremos darles un millón de gracias.

Ahora, al repasar las fotos de esta instalación y ver el agua dentro de las bolsas, a modo de sacas de dinero, no podemos dejar de pensar en cómo algunos gobiernos trafican con este vital elemento, ofreciéndolo al mejor postor…

Last September we were in Caracas invited by the Spanish Embassy to work on In the Middle of the Street , an urban festival that each year celebrates the importance of public space as a place of peaceful coexistence and took place on the 1st of September in the Chacao neighborhood in Caracas.

As usual, as we thought about the installation, we tried to introduce a little reflection regarding an issue which concerns us, in this case we weren’t going to do any less, and we chose water, one of our recurring themes.

With the piece, Portable River , we wanted to bring a river of water to the center of Caracas, for which we had to package it and lay it at rest, quite an unusual thing, because there it is normal to see it overflowing the streets every time it rains. We wanted to stop it for one night so that people could sit down and admire its beauty and perhaps, think about the value of this element, essential to life and the challenge presented in bringing it closer to the citizens, especially in the big cities.

To achieve our urban river, we created our own flow of crystal clear water packaged in 2,000 transparent bags, inside of which, in addition to light, we included samples of the life that dwells in it. Each bag was a small, ephemeral aquarium, a container of fish and plants, which, thanks to the light acquired an unsuspected value.

At the end of the night, the bystanders could carry away our small, illuminated ecosystems, converting the still river, into another that quickly circulated around the city, in the hands of children and adults who wanted to take them to their homes. Another example of the river overflowing, to our surprise…

This piece would not have been possible without the help of many friends: our incredible volunteers and the Bicycle Workshop, who were working and collecting plants with total dedication for 4 days, in order to be able to fill the bags; of course, dear María José and Anna, from the Embassy who treated us as if we were at home and helped us with everything and so much more, the organizers of the event Cachao Culture and Green Banana who hosted us and helped with the production very professionally and also the gentlemen from the water storage tank that collaborated selflessly, and to the people on the street that spontaneously offered to help so we could finish in the shortest possible time. We want is to give a million thanks to all of them.

Now, looking at the photos of this installation and seeing the water inside the bags, as if it were sacks of money, we cannot stop thinking about how some governments traffic in this vital element, offering it to the highest bidder…

Nuestros mejores deseos a los que velan por nuestra seguridad en las calles / Our best wishes go out to all those who make our streets safe

Esta Navidad, hemos pedido a Papa Noel que nos arregle algunas cosas que andan mal en nuestra ciudad, una lista que va ido creciendo hasta hacerse interminable a medida que se agudiza la crisis y los políticos nos descubren sus peores intenciones.

El señor Noel nos ha dicho que no podía hacer milagros, que eso es potestad de otro gremio, pero que trabajaría para que una de nuestras peticiones se materializara.

Así, después del día de Navidad, las cámaras de vigilancia del centro de Madrid aparecieron engalanadas con gorros luminosos que curiosamente impedían la visión de lo que acontecía delante de ellas.

Madrid es una ciudad, en las que a pesar de la normativa existente, en la práctica, no hay un control real sobre los dispositivos de vigilancia instalados en sus calles y el ciudadano, no tiene posibilidad de acceder a un registro que le informe sobre dónde están situadas las cámaras que lo observan las 24 horas al día.

En 2007 se intuía que más de 20.000 ojos vigilaban por nuestra seguridad, pero a día de hoy, no hay dispositivos capaces de controlar a los que nos controlan, y mientras a los políticos no les importa que se registre y se utilicen las imágenes de ciudadanos comunes, parece que tienen muchos inconvenientes en que “se graben y se difundan imágenes de agentes de seguridad en el ejercicio de sus funciones… si ponen en riesgo su persona o la operación en la que están trabajando…”.

La acción Feliz Navidad a los que nos vigilan tuvo lugar la noche del 26 de diciembre y para llevarla a cabo, intervinimos 20 cámaras instaladas en el centro de Madrid, principalmente las que vigilan las calles, otras situadas en edificios públicos y algunas de propiedad privada.

Esperamos que nuestros anónimos amigos detrás de las cámaras, apreciaran los calidos destellos de luz navideña con los que les obsequiamos en sus monitores de vigilancia.

This Christmas, we asked Santa Claus to fix some things that are wrong with our city for us, a seemingly endless list that keeps on growing as the crisis becomes more serious and politicians reveal their worst intentions to us.

Santa told us that he couldn’t perform miracles, that is the jurisdiction of another union, but that he would work on our behalf so that one of our petitions would be granted.

Therefore, after Christmas day, the surveillance cameras in the center of Madrid were covered with illuminated hats that prevented them from recording what was happening before them.

Madrid is a city, in which, despite the existing rules, in practice, there is no real control over the monitoring devices installed on its streets and the citizens don’t have the possibility of accessing the record of what these cameras record 24 hours a day in the places where they are situated.

In 2007 it was suggested that there were more than 20.000 cameras looking out for our safety, but today, there are no devices capable of controlling those who control us, and while politicians don’t care about that they record and use images of common citizens, it seems that they have many drawbacks in that «they record and disseminate images of security agents in the exercise of their functions… if you put their person or the operation on which they are working at risk…».

The action Merry Christmas to those who watch us took place on the night of December 26th and to carry it out, we used 20 cameras installed in the center of Madrid, mainly those that monitor the streets, other located on public buildings and some on private property.

We hope that our anonymous friends behind the cameras, appreciated the warm flashes of Christmas light which we presented them with on their surveillance monitors.

Hace un par de semanas, Madrid se preparaba para celebrar la Fiesta Nacional Española, que como todos los años y a pesar de la recesión económica, se celebra, con gran boato y despliegue de medios, el 12 de octubre.

Ese señalado día, parecía que no había penas, tampoco crisis, ya que la ciudad lució engalanada con grandes banderas y flores, mientras las fuerzas vivas y los ciudadanos de bien, se vestían con sus mejores galas para presenciar los numerosos desfiles militares, que tratan de recordarnos donde está el poder.

Para que esta insigne celebración tuviera lugar en perfecta armonía y se pudiera transmitir por la televisión estatal sin censura de ningún tipo, previamente hubo que limpiar y esconder algunas cosillas que está pasando en la ciudad, otro tipo de manifestaciones ciudadanas también multitudinarias, aunque menos marciales, que llenan las calles diariamente y no precisamente para festejar…

Nosotros, como buenos ciudadanos que somos, quisimos contribuir al ornato de ese día haciendo limpieza en la calles por las que normalmente transitamos, con la intención de que no quedara nada que afeara tan señalados festejos.

La noche anterior a la celebración, nos echamos a la calle con 20 cubos, que fuimos llenando de agua y detergente y lanzando por una céntrica calle de nuestro barrio, provocando un pequeño río con olas, que arrastraba lo que encontraba a su paso, hasta hacerlo caer por las alcantarillas.

Lo que simbólicamente dejamos en la calle, a merced de la corriente, fue un flota de pequeños barcos de papel que construimos con el programa electoral del partido que actualmente nos gobierna

La instalación se llamó Flota de promesas electorales incumplidas y para llevarla a cabo usamos 214 barcos iluminados, fabricados en hojas impresas, con la totalidad de un programa político titulado «Lo que España Necesita» y en el que encontramos, cientos de bonitas promesas que, nos parece, nunca ha habido intención de cumplir.

Nuestro pequeño ejercito naval, acabó convertido en una sencilla metáfora, de papel mojado e ilegible, que una vez terminada la instalación recogimos y depositamos en contenedores de papel.

Muchas gracias a nuestros amigos Cris, Alex y Aurora que nos ayudarnos con los preparativos y la instalación y a Lola Martínez y Gustavo Sanabria que hicieron el trabajo de documentar todo el proceso, Agradecemos estas dos miradas personales sobre un mismo momento.

Ojalá los programas con los que se ganan elecciones, hubiera que cumplirlos…

A couple of weeks ago, Madrid prepared to celebrate the Fiesta Nacional Española, which as every year, and despite the economic recession, is celebrated with great pomp and deployment of media, on the 12th of October.

On that day, it seemed there were no problems, nor crisis, as the city shone adorned with large flags and flowers, while the living forces and good citizens, dressed themselves in their best finery to witness the many military parades, trying to remind us where the power is.

In order that this outstanding celebration could take place in perfect harmony and could be presented on state television without any censorship of any kind, they previously had to clean up and hide some little things that are happening in the city, other types of public demonstrations, also multitudinous, although less martial, which fill the streets daily and not exactly to celebrate…

We, like good citizens that we are, wanted to contribute to the beautification of that day by cleaning the streets that we normally pass through, with the intention that there would be nothing left to debase such remarkable celebrations.

The night before the celebration, we went out into the street with 20 buckets, which we filled with water and detergent and threw onto a central street in our neighborhood, creating a small river with waves, that dragged along anything in its path, until it fell into the sewers.

What we symbolically left in the street, at the mercy of the current, was a fleet of small paper boats that we built with the electoral program of the party that currently governs us.

The installation was called Fleet of unfilfilled election promises and to carry it out we used 214 illuminated boats, manufactured of printed pages, with the entire political program entitled «What Spain needs» in which you can find hundreds of beautiful promises, which it seems to us, there has never been any intention to fulfill.

Our small naval fleet, ended up becoming a simple metaphor, of wet and unreadable paper, that, once the installation was complete we picked up and deposited into paper recycling containers.

Many thanks to our friends Cris, Alex and Aurora who helped us with the preparations and the installation and to Lola Martínez and Gustavo Sanabria who documented the whole process. We appreciate these two personal views at the same time.

If only programs with which elections are won had to be fulfilled…

Árbol de navidad consumista / Consumerist Christmas Tree

Nos pidieron, para la ciudad de Buenos Aires, una propuesta de instalación navideña que ayudara a concienciar a la población del excesivo uso de las bolsas de plástico y las consecuencias que este consumo tiene para la medio ambiente.

Acabábamos de llevar a cabo una instalación, con la misma premisa, para el museo Gewerbemuseum de Winthertur y decidimos que sería interesante desarrollar algo más este concepto, en una instalación de mayor envergadura.

Pensamos en un gran árbol de navidad, construido con bolsas utilizadas durante el periodo previo a las Navidades, fechas en la que se incrementa considerablemente su uso. Ibamos a pedir la colaboración de los bonaerenses, cambiando sus mas recientes bolsas de plastico por otras más ecologicas.

Para darle forma, montaríamos una gran estructura de malla metálica en forma de cono, en la que irían sujetas tiras de luz que la repartirían de manera homogénea por toda la superficie del cono.

Sujetas a la malla metálica, cubriéndola en toda su totalidad, miles de bolsas infladas dejarían pasar la luz, convirtiendo la totalidad del cono en una superficie brillante y colorista llena de referencias publicitarias.

Una puerta, permitiría el acceso al interior del árbol en el que se habilitaria un espacio íntimo donde sentarse a visionar todo tipo de proyecciones y documentación relacionada con de la producción y consumo de plásticos.

Ojalá pronto podamos llevar a cabo esta intalación.

We were asked for a proposal, by the city of Buenos Aires, for a Christmas installation that would help to raise awareness concerning the excessive use of plastic bags and the consequences that this consumption has for the environment.

We just carried out an installation, with the same premise, for the Gewerbemuseum museum in Winthertur and decided that it would be interesting to develop this concept further, with an installation of greater scope.

We thought about a grand Christmas tree, built of the bags used during the period prior to Christmas, the dates in which their use dramatically increases. We were going to ask for the cooperation of the citizens of Buenos Aires, exchanging their most recent plastic bags for other more ecological ones.

To give it shape, we would construct a large structure of metal mesh in the shape of a cone, upon which strips of lights would be attached that would be spread evenly over the whole surface of the cone.

Attached to the metal mesh, covering it in its entirety, would be thousands of inflated bags which would let the light pass through, converting the entire cone into a luminuous and colorful surface filled with advertising.

A door, would allow access to the interior of the tree in which would create a cozy space where one could sit and watch all kinds of projections and documentation related to the production and consumption of plastics.

Hopefully soon we will be able to carry out this installation.
