Drawing the Drought / Dibujando la sequía

Last October, the day after Francisco Franco’s remains were exhumed, we visited the Valley of the Fallen, the dictator’s last abode.

We wanted to find the right scenario to illuminate such a historic moment. However, there was actually very little we could add to this issue as everything had been said and said again…

The trip, nonetheless, was not in vain. At the foot of the mausoleum, we found the perfect landscape to bring to life a piece that we had intended to carry out for some time.

La Jarosa is a reservoir in Sierra de Guadarrama that is suffering a brutal decrease of water due to lack of rain and the high temperatures reached during a harsh summer. Although many fail to recognize it, this is directly related to gas emissions provoked by climate change.

The reservoir was at 30% of its capacity at the time, 26 points less compared to this time last year. The situation was bleak. There was a scarce water reserve in the shape of a harrowing lake right in front of an area of cracked mud covered with lichen and weeds produced by the timid rain that had fallen on the previous days.

The dam, which was formerly full of water, looked then distant and strange, without a practical purpose, as if it did not have anything to do with water.

We located the center of the field at dusk where we drew, with blue powder, a circle of a 10-meter diameter. After this, we carefully filled its cracks with thin strips of light.

We worked with our bare hands and this made us feel the drought in our own skin as we stirred the bottom of the reservoir, which is now broken into a million bits.

It took us 2 hours to finish the circle. It was getting dark and, as if by magic, the circle started to become clear and defined before our eyes as well as the eyes of those who happened to be there, who were surprinsingly more than a few.

We left the circle with light until the dead of night. We wanted the people who were driving on the roads around the reservoir to wonder what that mysterious circle in the middle of the reservoir was.

We finally picked everything up and left no trace behind us.

We hope for the autumn rain to return this landscape to its original state and that the wounds of the earth scar under a generous stream of water.

We want to thank Elisa for helping us with the filling and Angel for giving us the heads-up on what was going on and lending us a hand with the setup. We also want to thank Melisa Hernández for her photoreport.

We are happy to be able to go out there and set up these tiny guerrilla installations without much pressure. They require more ingenuity than means, and they allow us to freely speak about the issues we are interested in, in a format of our choice.

There will be more material soon as Christmas is just around the corner and the World Climate Summit is to be held in Madrid. There is so much work to be done!!!!!

Time of installation: and installation: 3 hours.
Damages: none.
Exhibition time: 2 hours.

———————————–
