Last October, we were part of the 2022 Nuit Blanche Taipei with our piece On Blank Pages, which we have previously carried out in Madrid and Ghent.

The purpose of this piece is the same as on former occasions – to set up a large installation with a poetic character. This is a wall for freedom of speech where the feelings of people can be shown uncensored. It is made of light and casual sound. It is a great wall covered with thousands of notebooks with blank pages taking over the public space. This time, the piece was adapted to the circular shape of a roundabout in the city’s downtown area.

The humongous cylindrical surface was perceived as a continuous infinite space for freedom of speech, created to host a huge collage formed by anonymous private interventions which the wind moved at will offering a myriad of random compositions thanks to these collective contributions.

An essential part of the piece was the sound made by the moving pages which turned the surface into a unique constant voice composed of each and every one of the ideas and thoughts printed on the moving lighted paper. As the location was a roundabout, the air currents that built up did a better job of moving the pages and making the sound.

To shape the piece, we built a circular structure with scaffold parts, with a 20-meter diameter and 3.5 meters high. It hid inside all the elements that formed the roundabout. We placed 4,000 notebooks on this structure.

Before placing the notebooks, people were asked to participate by sending messages on the festival’s social networks. People were called on to share their feelings and emotions and whatever opinion they did not dare to express during the lockdown, and to say what this new life of relative normality represented to them. These messages were randomly printed on different notebooks so that they could be later read. During the Nuit Blanche event, visitors were invited to write on the remaining pages whatever they wished to share.

El pasado mes de octubre participamos en La Nuit Blanche de Taipei., con nuestra pieza «En páginas blancas», que previamente hemos llevado a cabo en Madrid y Gante.

El propósito de la pieza ha sido el mismo que en las anteriores ocasiones, llevar a cabo una instalación de gran tamaño y carácter poético, un muro de libre expresión donde mostrar los pensamientos de los ciudadanos sin censura, hecha de luz y sonido casual. Un gran muro cubierto por miles de cuadernos de hojas blancas que invadan el espacio público. Esta vez la pieza adaptada a la forma circular de una rotonda del centro de la ciudad.

La gigantesca superficie cilíndrica blanca se percibía como un espacio continuo infinito de libre expresión, creado para alojar un monumental collage de intervenciones anónimas e íntimas que el viento movía al azar, ofreciendo al espectador millones de composiciones aleatorias, fruto de las aportaciones colectivas.

Parte esencial de la pieza es el sonido de las hojas en movimiento, que convierte la superficie en una voz única y constante, compuesta por todas y cada una de las ideas y pensamientos plasmados en papel Iluminado en movimiento. Al ser una rotonda, las corrientes de aire que se generaban hacían mejor el trabajo de mover las hojas y producir sonido.

Para dar forma a la pieza, construimos una estructura circular con piezas de andamio, de 20 metros de diámetro y 3,5 m de altura, dejando ocultos en su interior todos los elementos que formaban la rotonda, en esta estructura colocamos 4.000 cuadernos de papel reciclado.

Previamente a la instalación de los cuadernos, se pidió la participación ciudadana para que mandaran mensajes a través de las redes sociales del festival. Se hizo un llamamiento para que los ciudadanos compartieran sus sentimientos, emociones, y cualquier opinión que no se hubiera atrevido a expresar durante el confinamiento, y lo que representaba para ellos esta nueva vida de relativa normalidad. Luego, se imprimieron aleatoriamente los mensajes en diferentes cuadernos para que se pudieran leer, y durante el evento de la Nuit Blanche, se invitaba a los visitantes a escribir en el resto de las hojas lo que libremente se quieran compartir.

Queremos dar las gracias a todo el equipo del festival que desde el principio se pusieron a trabajar para plasmar la idea y aportar resoluciones técnicas que ayudaron a la que quedara perfecta.
