Upside Down / Al revés

2ª Propuesta de intervención del Jardín Central del Victoria & Albert Museum de Londres dentro del programa Garden Comission.

Todo el día estamos oyendo que el mundo está volviéndose del revés, que la crisis ha hecho que las cosas que creímos incuestionables hayan acabado dando un giro de 180º para adaptarse a la condiciones adversas que nos toca vivir.

Personalmente somos de la opinión de que revisar valores tradicionales y verdades inamovibles, para acabar sustituyéndolos por otros más creativos, humanos y sostenibles, aunque menos lucrativos, lejos de ser un paso hacia atrás es un avance grande para una supervivencia digna.

Pensando en cómo las cosas han cambiado para situarse donde nunca pensamos que podían acabar, hemos querido demostrar de una manera metafórica, que los cambios, si se hacen con sentido, no tienen por que ser malos y que además pasado un tiempo, los acabaremos aceptando como normales.

Esperemos pues, que a la vista de nuestra pieza, alguien pueda pensar, cómo le gustaría que los peces volasen y las aves nadasen, ¿por qué no?…

Esta instalación a pesar de ser llevada a cabo por un colectivo de iluminación, no pierde ni un ápice de su significado al ser vista de día y a pleno sol.

2nd Proposal for the installation in the Victoria & Albert Museum‘s Central Garden in London within the Garden Commission Scheme. October 2010.

Every day we hear the World is upside down, that the crisis has changed things to a degree we considered previously impossible and we have to adapt to current circumstances.

We think revising traditional values and truths and having more creative, humane and Earth friendly attitude, though less profitable, is far from being a step backwards for the survival of society.

Things have changed in unexpected ways, we intend our installation to show metaphorically that changes with a course do not have to be bad. After a while, everyone will end up accepting them as a matter-of-course.

So we hope this piece will enable people to think how they would like fish to fly and birds to swim, why not?

Although the installation will be lit, it will still be able to be appreciated during the day-time.

Alas de celulosa / Cellulose wings

Proyecto para Luminale 2010

Es enojoso observar cómo la publicidad cambia el aspecto de los objetos que pone a la venta, para adaptarlas a sus intereses y para que nosotros, al verlos desde su perspectiva, sintamos inmediatas ganas de consumir lo que nos ofrecen.

Este es el caso de por ejemplo las compresas, que siempre se anuncian como productos etéreo, ligeros, blancos inmaculados, sin olor, estéticamente bellos… evitando que aparezca el color rojo que es sustituido por sutiles toques azules, que son dejados caer sobre la superficie blanca, como si de lluvia se tratase.

El eslogan de una antigua campaña publicitaria de compresas, “Ausonia te da alas” en el que las chicas aparecían flotando felices, los días en los que usaban este producto, nos inspiró para nuestra propuesta Alas de celulosa en las que por una vez nos hemos creído la publicidad y hemos convertido un objeto de tan engorroso uso, en otro mucho más onírico, puro y delicado.

Proyect for Luminale 2010.

It is bothersome to see how advertising campaigns change the appearance of things so as to adapt them to their own interests, and by seeing from this point of view we feel inclined to buying the products or services advertised.

It is the case of sanitary towels, for instance, which are advertised as ethereal, light, inmaculate, odorless and beautiful. But the red colour is never present and it is replaced by blue drops that fall as if it were rain on them.

The slogan for the advertising campaign of sanitary towels called “Ausonia makes you feel free” (Ausonia te da alas) shows young women floating merrily in the air and the days on which they must use this item. It became an inspiration for our proposal Cellulose wings and for just this time we have believed the message and we have turned this object –so annoying to use- into a much more oneiric, pure and delicate.

Emptying the city of rubble / Vaciando de escombros la ciudad

Una primera versión de la instalación Vaciando el Museo, presentada al Victoria & Albert Museum de Londres en verano del 2010.

Nuestra instalación trata de imitar, mediante largos tubos formados por la unión de muchas pantallas de lámparas, con estética vintage y vivos colores, el sistema que se utiliza para vaciar de pequeños escombros los edificios en rehabilitación.

Cada uno de nuestros tubos de desescombro, terminará en un contenedor, dentro habrá instalados tubos fluorescentes que conseguirán que todo el contenedor quede iluminado.

La idea surgió al observar en los contenedores de edificios en rehabilitación, la cantidad de objetos interesantes estéticamente y cargados de historia sobre sus antiguos dueños, que se desechan por viejos e inapropiados, para dar paso a la estética renovada, minimalista y globalizada tan común en el diseño actual.

Por eso la idea de utilizar elementos de los que comúnmente se encuentran en estos contenedores para nuestra instalación y pensamos en pantallas antiguas, con la idea de sacar a la luz lo que está pasando en los edificio y también ayudar metafóricamente a que ese transito del pasado al presente no sea tan doloroso…

Queremos embellecer la ciudad esta noche y hacerlo con luz, la materia que mejor dominamos, pero no queremos dejar de hablar de la realidad que nos rodea, donde la especulación inmobiliaria permite que edificios se vengan abajo por intereses creados o que se acometan remodelaciones espectaculares en las que no queda el más mínimo rastro de la esencia del primitivo edificio y la gente que lo habitó.

An early version of the installation Emptying the Museum, submitted to the Victoria & Albert Museum of London in summer of 2010.

Our installation tries to imitate, through the use of large tubes formed by the union of many lampshades, of aesthetic vintage and bright colors, the system that is used to remove small rubble from buildings under renovation.

Each one of our rubble tubes, will finish in a container, inside there will be flourescent tubes installed which will achieve the effect of lighting the entire container.

The idea came about through observing in the containers at buildings under renovation, the quantity of aesthetically interesting objects, loaded with history about their former owners, which are discarded for being old or inappropriate, minimalist and globalized being so common in current design.

For this reason the idea of utilizing elements which are commonly found in these containers for our installation and we think old lampshades, with the idea of bringing to light what is happening in the buildings and also, metaphorically helping make this transition from past to present less painful…

We want to beautify the city tonight and do it with light, the medium which we master the best, but we don’t want to stop talking about the reality which surrounds us, where real estate speculation allows buildings to be torn down by vested interests or spectacular renovations to be undertaken after which there remains no trace of the original building or the people who lived in it.

Invented shadows / Sombras inventadas

Proyecto para Fete des lumieres Lyon 2009 también presentado a Nuit Blanche Paris 2010.

Una de las cosas que más nos gusta de la noche son las sombras que los objetos y las personas proyectan sobre las calles.

Por desgracia, en muchas ciudades, Madrid entre ellas, la potencia lumínica hace casi imposible disfrutar de ellas, ya que han desaparecido sepultadas bajo la potente luz de las farolas.

Así esta propuesta de intervención quiere recuperar sombras en la ciudad para convertir por unos días la calle en un lugar misterioso y onírico, donde nada es lo que parece.

Para conseguirlo contamos con un artista, cuyo magnífico trabajo nos ha inspirado este proyecto, que será el encargado de crear las sombras que habitarán la calle durante una semana.

En el callejón elegido, que estará completamente a oscura, colocaremos bombillas sujetas a la pared, a 5 metros del suelo. Estas bombillas incandescentes, de gran potencia, proyectarán sus haces de luz a las paredes y al suelo del callejón elegido. Bajo las bombillas irán unas siluetas translucidas, que interceptarán el paso de la luz, creando así las sombras inventadas.

Gracias a este mecanismo, de apariencia simple, conseguiremos que la calle adquiera una vida insospechada llena de personajes que habitan las paredes y el suelo de la ciudad.

Y todo esto sin llevar a cabo grandes instalaciones y sin deteriorar el mobiliario urbano ni la infraestructura de la calle.

Project for Fete des lumieres Lyon 2009 also presented for Nuit Blanche Paris 2010.

One of the things we like most about the night are the shadows that objects and people cast into the streets.

Unfortunately, in many cities, Madrid among them, the lighting makes it almost impossible to enjoy them, as they have disappeared under the powerful illumination of the streetlamps.

The proposal of this intervention is to bring the shadows back to the city in order to convert the street into a mysterious and dreamlike place for a few days, where nothing is what it seems.

To achieve this, we have an artist, whose magnificent work has inspired this project, who will be in charge of creating the shadows which will inhabit the streets for a week.

In the chosen alley, which will be completely dark, we will attach bulbs to the walls, 5 meters above the ground. These incandescent bulbs, of high wattage, will project their light at the walls and the ground of the chosen alley. Underneath the bulbs, there will be translucent silhouettes which will intercept the passage of the light, thus creating the invented shadows.

Thanks to this mechanism, of simple design, we will ensure that the street takes on an unexpected life full of characters which inhabit the walls and ground of the city.

And all this without carrying out a large installation, without damaging either structures or infrastructure in the street.

Softening the urban gray / Suavizando el gris urbano

Proyecto para el L’ Escorxador

Centro de Cultura Contemporánea de Elche.

Nuestro deseo es llevar a cabo una instalación lumínica efímera, en el entorno urbano de la ciudad de Elche para que los vecinos interactúen con ella.

Con nuestra instalación Suavizando el gris urbano queremos dar confort a un espacio público, sustituyendo el color gris, tan común, por un blanco y mullido espacio en el que los vecinos puedan jugar y relajarse, como si estuvieran tumbados en una inmensa cama luminosa.

Para ello forraremos completamente una plaza céntrica de Elche con edredones, en los que habremos insertado gran cantidad de puntos de luz, para que quede iluminado por la noche.

Los elementos de mobiliario público que existen en la plaza también serán cubiertos, papeleras, troncos de árbol, semáforos, bancos, fuentes… no dejando que nada duro e incomodo quede a la vista.

Además de los edredones, que irán fijados al suelo, lo llenaremos todo de cojines luminosos, para que los más pequeños jueguen y organicen batallas y los mayores se pongan cómodos y disfruten del espacio.

Project for the L’ Escorxador Centro de Cultura Contemporánea in Elche.

Our desire is to carry out a short-lived luminous installation, in the urban environment of the city of Elche which the inhabitants can interact with.

With our installation Softening the urban gray we want to bring comfort to a public space, substituting the ever so common gray color, with a white, fluffy space where the inhabitants can play and relax, as if they were lying on a huge illuminated bed.

In order to do this, we will completely cover the central plaza of Elche with quilts, in which we will have inserted a large number of light points, so that it stays illuminated for the night.

The public fixtures which exist in the plaza will also be covered, garbage cans, tree trunks, traffic lights, benches, fountains… so that nothing hard or uncomfortable remains in view.

Besides the quilts, which will be fixed to the ground, it will be filled with illuminated cushions, so that the youngest may play and organize battles and the elderly can make themselves comfortable and enjoy the space.
