Cuando llegó septiembre

Madrid en septiembre se ha llenado de gente, de obras y de atascos, pero aun se percibe en sus calles un cierto aire festivo y caluroso, un lejano aroma a bronceador y ecos de conversaciones vacacionales que provocan sensaciones contradictorias de caos y relax.

Algo de esto es lo que hemos querido representar con nuestra instalación luminosa Sombrillas en playa de obras, ambientando a nuestra manera, ese ambiente que captamos en la ciudad y que nos hace sentir, a ratos agobiados, a ratos con ganas de echarnos a la calle y festejar.

Para ello hemos utilizado 200 sombrillitas chinas de cocktail, a las que hemos puesto luz y situado en uno de nuestros escenarios favoritos, la zanja de unas obras que se estaban llevando a cabo en la Calle Libreros de la capital.

Al lado de este escenario cochambroso y sucio, uno de los garitos más de moda de la ciudad, el Fabuloso.

Esto pasó el domingo 5 de septiembre, y como siempre estaba con nosotros Gustavo Sanabria que hizo las estupendas fotos.

Madrid in September has filled with people, construction projects and traffic jams, but still you percieve in its streets a certain hot and festive air, the distant aroma of suntan lotion and the echoes of holiday conversations which provoke the contradictory sensations of chaos and relaxation.

Some of this is what we wanted to represent with our luminous installation Parasols on the beach under construction, bringing our own atmosphere, to this environment that we see in the city and which makes us feel, at times burdened, at times with the desire to go out into the street and celebrate.

We used 200 tropica
l cocktail parasols, which we lit and put in one of our favorite settings, the trnch of a construction project that was being done in Calle Libreros in the capital.

Beside this filthy setting is one of the more fashionable hangouts in the city, the Fabuloso.

This took place on Sunday, September 5th and as always Gustavo Sanabria was with us and took these marvelous photos.

Little birds inhabiting scaffolding / Pajarillos habitando andamios

Paseando por una de las zonas más comerciales de Madrid, la Calle Preciados, nos llamaron la atención esas bolas amarillas, que se colocan para evitar accidentes con los anclajes de los andamios.

Había tantas protesis instaladas, que la gigantesca y amenazadora estructura de tubos metálicos, había adquirido, gracias a estos puntos de llamativo color, un aspecto mucho más amable, tanto, que daban ganas de quedarse a investigar, los extraños objetos que la gente a su paso iba introduciéndo en sus orificios.

Y una calurosa noche de julio, decidimos darles visibilidad, para que la gente reparara, como nosotros, en lo que estos insignificantes y comunes objetos, aportaban al aspecto de una calle en obras.

Para nuestra instalación Nidos Urbanos, sólo tuvimos que habitar las bolas con 130 pájaros de colores, que dejamos mirando a la calle desde sus improvisadas casitas en el andamio y por supuesto les pusimos luz, consiguiendo una acogedora y cálida atmósfera en toda la zona andamida, que invitaba a permanecer dentro largo rato, contemplando tan inusual habitat.

Gustavo Sanabria estuvo presente en toda la operación y nos regaló estas estupendas fotos.

Walking through one of the most commercial areas of Madrid, Calle Preciados, our attention was drawn to these yellow ballswhich are put in place to avoid accidents with scaffolding joints.

There were so many of them installed that the gigantic, threatening metal tube structure had acquired, thanks to these striking points of color, a much more pleasing aspect and theref
ore we had the urge to stay and investigate the strange objects that people walking by were introducing into the holes.

And one warm night in July we decided to make them more visible so that people would notice, like us, what these insignificant, common objects brought to the aspect of a street under construction.

For our installation Urban Nests, we only had to populate the balls with 130 colored birds, that we left looking into the street from their makeshift homes in the scaffolding and of course light them, to achieve a warm, cozy atmosphere throughout the scaffolded area, inviting one to remain and contemplate such an unusual habitat.

Gustavo Sanabria was present throughout the operation and gifted us with these wonderful photos.

Floating Presenses / Mirando bajo el agua

Estuvimos en el Festival Rizoma a principios de julio. Se celebró en Molinicos un pequeño pueblo de la provincia de Albacete, famoso por que en él se rodó hace 22 años un mítica película del cine español Amanece que no es poco.

Allí, quisimos rendir un personal homenaje a la película, dejandos un ejercito de seres de luz, que perfectamente pudieran haber formado parte de la ambientacion surrealista de la película, y que durante una semana custodiaron los dos arrollos que discurren por el pueblo.

80 presencias iluminadas poblaron las aguas, observando sin perder detalle lo que bajo ellas pasaba, conviviendo en armonía con peces, patos, niños bañándose y vecinos en general, que se acercaban con frecuencia, primero curiosos y una vez familiarizados con los personajes flotantes, interesados en saber si todo seguía en perfecto estado.

Nuestra instalación Presencias flotantes cumplio un bonito fin, hacer que la parte baja del pueblo, menos frecuentada, se convirtiera por una semana en centro de reunión de los vecinos.

A la semana la instalación fue desmontada sin que ninguno de los seres de luz hubiera sufrido baja ni deterioro. El río quedó completamente limpio y sin contaminar.

Una bonita experiencia de convivencia en el entorno rural donde conocimos a interesante gente local y también disfrutamos de un estupendo festival de cine y música con amigos.

At the beginning of July we took part in Rizoma Festival, in Molinicos, a small village in the province of Albacete, famous for the shooting of a film 22 years ago: the mythical Spanish film called Amanece que no es poco.

There in this town in the eastern mountains of La Mancha, we set ourselves to the task of leaving an army of lit beings, which could have formed part of the surrealist atmosphere the film depicts, and they guarded the streams that flow through the town.

80 lit presences populating the water, and observing with all attention what passed by them. All living in harmony among fish, ducks, children bathing and also neighbours. The villagers came closer, first curious, and then when they were more used to the floating characters, they wanted to assure themselves all was in perfect state.

Our installation Floating Presenses achieved a lovely aim: making the less frequented lower part of the town the centre for neighbours to meet at least that week.

A week later the installation was dismantled and none of the lit beings was hurt or damaged. The river was left clean and unpolluted.

A beautiful experience in a rural environment where we met interesting local people and enjoyed this great film and music festival with friends,

Lecturas personales

El pasado mes de junio estuvimos en Eslovenia participando en el festival Lighting Guerrilla.

La instalación que elegimos fue una variación de otra que ya hicimos en el 2008 Lecturas privadas en lugares públicos, pero esta vez, aumentada y corregida.

Y aunque la ciudad de Lubiana es maravillosa, aun pudimos encontrar algunos rincones deteriorados en los que dejar nuestra luminosa llamada de atención en forma de libros.

Así, durante 2 noches, instalamos 1oo lamparas para lecturas íntimas, acompañadas de libros de poesía y comic esloveno y esta vez añadimos 100 cojines con luz para la comodidad del lector, todos diseminados por los rincones más marginales de la ciudad.

Gracias a Katerina y a la gente del festival Strip Core por ayudarnos en todo y hacernos sentir como en casa.

Last June we were in Slovenia in a Lighting Guerrilla festival.

The installation we choose for this occasion was a variation of one we carried out in 2008 called “Private readings in Public Sites” but this time bigger and better.

Ljubiana is a wonderful city but even so we were able to find some deteriored sites where we left our ‘lighting’ call of attention in the form of books.

For 2 nights we set up 100 lamps for intimal poetry reading, -poetry books and Slovenian comic books- and this time we added 100 cushions provided with light for readers to feel comfortable. All this was left in the most marginal corneres of the city.

Trap for mosquitos / Mosquitos antipublicidad

En estas noches de calor sofocante, de los mosquitos no se libran ni los guapos y perfectos modelos, de cutis impecable, que se exhiben omnipresentes en los espacios publicitarios de la ciudad. Y es que la belleza y la intensa luz, les atrae y hace que se precipiten cegados hacia ella, sin intuir que van a una muerte segura.

Así paso la noche del 29 de junio cuando una plaga, algo desarrollada de unos 200, acabó contra los cristales de algunas de las más sobreiluminadas marquesinas publicitarias del centro de la ciudad.

Gustavo Sanabria fue testigo de este curioso acontecimimento, al que hemos llamado Trampa para mosquitos y aquí os dejamos sus fotos para que vosotros también podáis apreciar, los estragos que estos mamotretos luminosos pueden causar en la vida cotidiana.

En este caso acabó con cientos de mosquitos autóctonos, pero en otras circunstancias podría atraer, con sus cantos de sirena que hablan de lujo, consumo, marca y belleza irreal e inalcanzable, a otros animales más evolucionados, incluso a algún conductor despistado o espíritus fácilmente influenciable…

On nights of unbearable heat, mosquitos feed on even the handsome and perfect models, with smooth skin, that our exhibited everywhere in the advertising spaces in the city. And it is the beautiful and intense light what attracts them and makes them fall towards it-not knowing it will be their end for sure.

This is how on 29 June a plague, of about 200, ended up against the overlit glass panels of the advertising billboards in the centre of the city.

Gustavo Sanabria was a witness of this curious event which we have titled Trap for mosquitos and here are some photos so that you can appreciate the ravages that this lit huge things can cause in our ordinary lives.

In this case the result was for hundreds of indigeneous mosquitos, but in other circunstances it could attract -like a siren’s chant showing an irreal and unreachable luxury from brands proper of our consumer society-, other more evolved animals, even a distracted driver or other easily influenced spirits…
