Plastic Stuck in the Landscape / Plástico enganchado al paisaje

It’s been a while since we swing by here and say hello, an eternity it seems.

We stayed at home, taking that necessary break, thinking and trying to be safe. We found no reasons to leave the creative quarantine during the break though.

It’s time to get back to the world although we still are in a whirlwind of emotions and aren’t yet ready to artistically shape what we are experiencing.

However, we certainly think we need to go back to issues we left off that were themselves quite concerning and are still current unfortunately. We are of course talking about plastic consumption, a recurring issue in our work.

It consumption has alarmingly gone up during these months of lockdown due to the sanitary demand for protection material, the packaging of the food that arrived home, the massive online shopping… together with a widespreade lack of recycling awareness.

The idea “Plastic Stuck in the Landscape” isn’t new. It came to us while we were traveling and visited those marginal places that form the blurry limits between the country and the city, home of the countless amount of waste trapped in there and abandoned, mostly light plastic material carried by the wind. The climate degrades it and turns into shreds that are easily carried by the air until it gets stuck in something and stays there forever.

The effect is beautifully sad and alarming above all. One cannot escape its motion and sound although it is an unhealthy unnatural scene that evinces the damage this plastic waste causes in any environment which makes scared animals flee leaving the flora wither as there are no insects to pollinate.

This piece is easy to carry out. We just need a tree or a forest, a lot of plastic waste like bags, tarps or large pieces collected from neighbors, some powerful fans, and lights to illuminate the trees.

The plastic will be shredded in all sizes to be tied to the branches of the trees so that, when the fans are turned on, the wind will move it all and make it sound creating a beautiful unsettling soundtrack.
We hope to make it as soon as everything gets normally new and we can safely return to our activity in public places so everybody can join us.

Mucho tiempo desde que no pasábamos por aquí, tanto que parece una eternidad.

Estuvimos en casa, haciendo esa pausa necesaria, pensando e intentando cuidarnos. Durante el parón, no encontramos motivos suficientes para salir de la cuarentena creativa.

Es momento de volver al mundo, pero seguimos subidos a una montaña rusa de emociones, y no nos encontramos aun preparados para dar forma artística a lo que estamos viviendo.

Lo que sí nos parece necesario, es retomar lo que dejamos pendiente, cuestiones que ya eran muy preocupantes, y que desgraciadamente no han perdido un ápice de vigencia. Nos estamos refiriendo, por supuesto, al consumo de plástico, uno de los temas recurrentes de nuestro trabajo.

Y es que en estos meses de confinamiento, ha aumentado alarmantemente su consumo, debido a las necesidades sanitarias de material de protección de un solo uso, del envasado de alimentos que nos ha llegado a casa, las masivas compras online… junto a cierto grado de despreocupación generalizada por el reciclaje.

La idea “Plástico enganchado al paisaje” no es nueva, se nos ocurrió cuando viajábamos y nos encontrábamos en escenarios marginales, esas fronteras difusas entre lo rural y lo urbano en las que acaban varados miles de deshechos de los que nadie se ocupa, especialmente material plástico ligero, transportado por el viento. La climatología se encarga de degradarlo y acaba convertido en jirones que el aire transporta con facilidad, hasta que encuentra un obstáculo, y allí se queda, enganchado para la eternidad.

El efecto es tristemente bello, pero sobre todo alarmante. Uno no puede sustraerse a su movimiento y su sonido, pero en realidad se trata de una escena anómala e insalubre, ya que pone en evidencia el mal que esta basura plástica causa en un entorno, en el que los animales han desaparecido asustados y con ellos la flora, que se empobrece hasta morir, al no haber insectos polinizando.

La pieza es sencilla de llevar a cabo, se necesita: un árbol o un bosque, gran cantidad de material plástico, tipo bolsas, lonas, o grandes piezas, recolectadas del uso de los vecinos, varios ventiladores potentes y focos que iluminen los arboles.

El plástico se cortarán en tiras de todos los tamaños que se atarán a las ramas de los árboles y cuando los ventiladores funcionen, el viento lo moverá y hará sonar, generando una banda sonora bella y escalofriante.

Esperamos poder llevar a cabo esta idea en un futuro próximo, cuando todo sea ya normalmente nuevo y podamos retomar con seguridad nuestra actividad en el espacio público, junto a todos a que nos acompañen.

Plastic Vomits / Vómito de plásticos

We have spent some time placing our artistic novelties over our heads. The reason for this is that, from our viewpoint, future wars on pollution will not only take place on water and land, but also in the sky, the only place that stays clear of plastic. However, it is also full of other toxic substances that are equally dangerous. 

Thus, besides our Plastic Full Moon our Constellations for Polluted Skies and Permanent Constellations for Polluted Skies, we are introducing now Plastic Vomits, a cascading installation that will bury an entire building as it flows.  

For its creation, we will make a curtain that will cover the facade of a high building on a main city street. The piece will be obviously made of plastic waste obtained from local consumers. It would also be lighted at night.

This miscellanea of plastic materials will be sewn to a metal mesh the size of the chosen building. It will be fastened to the top of it, and it will smoothly fall all the way down to the sidewalk. 

This large lighted surface will turn into a luminous backdrop which will dramatically display the amount of plastic that invades us day to day. It will interfere with the city’s daily life with its annoying presence.

Passersby will be able to approach it. We would like to create an access into the building to complete this claustrophobic experience to recreate the asphyxiating feeling of staring and breathing through this unhealthy material.

We hope to materialize this idea soon.

Llevamos un tiempo en el que el escenario elegido para nuestras nuevas artísticas se sitúa sobre nuestras cabezas, la razón es que pensamos que las futuras guerras contra la polución, además de situarse en el agua y la tierra, habrá que batallarlas también desde el cielo, el único espacio que aun se mantiene libre de plásticos, pero que ya viene bien cargado de otros tóxicos igualmente peligrosos. 

Así, a nuestras Luna Llena de Plásticos, Constelaciones para cielos contaminados y Constelaciones permanentes para cielos contaminados sumamos ahora Vómito de plásticos una instalación en cascada, que al caer sepulta todo un edificio. 

Para llevarla a cabo, crearemos una fachada cortina que cubrirá completamente el exterior de un edificio de gran altura de una calle principal de una ciudad. La pieza se hará por supuesto con deshechos de plásticos consumidos localmente, y también estaría iluminada por la noche.

Materiales plásticos de todo tipo, se coserán a una malla metálica del tamaño exacto del edificio elegido, e irá fijada a la parte superior cayendo limpiamente hasta llegar a la acera. 

Esta gran superficie iluminada se convertirá en un telón de fondo luminoso que visualizará de manera dramática la cantidad de plástico que nos invade e interferirá con su presencia molesta en la vida cotidiana de la ciudad.

Los viandantes podrán acercarse y sentirla y nos gustaría que se pudiera acceder al interior del edifico para completar una experiencia claustrofóbica, en la que sentir la asfixia que produce mirar y respirar a través de este material tan insano.

Ojalá pronto la veamos construida.

(Plastic) Full Moon / Luna Llena (de plástico)

We saw how a giant moon was made in China to light dark nights. We also know other artists whom we respect who have used large celestial bodies in their work. That means that, for this occasion and this occasion only, we shall not be completely original in our proposal for a large moon. Hence, we’d better make it quite “in our style.”

Our moon shall also be quite present in the city’s profile. However, it won’t be kind. On the contrary, the idea is to make it look menacing in order to experience an unsettling feeling when staring at it. This shall serve as a warning for the environmental threat hanging over our heads.

For it is not such a dystopian fancy to image the moon full of our plastic waste… we feel that the next space trips will be loaded with everything we cannot or do not want to recycle in our civilized countries.

For its creation, we will start from a giant ball structure made of chicken wire. We think it can be created with the triangular sections of a geodesic dome. Every separated part will be filled with plastic waste of all kinds sewn to the mesh with wire. Once all the parts are ready, and with the use of a crane, they will be attached together until obtaining the intended round shape.

The ball will be covered by a net that will prevent any container from falling out and will hang from a high crane that will raise this recycle moon to the top of the city.

It will be lighted with beams which will change their color temperature to turn it into a golden sun during the daytime.

We hope to be able to materialize this soon because 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of the first humans landing on the Moon on July 20.

Vimos que en China se habían hecho una luna gigante para noches oscuras, y conocemos a otros artistas a los que respetamos, que han empleado astros de grandes dimensiones en su trabajo, eso significa que, por una vez y sin que sirva de precedente, no estamos siendo totalmente originales al plantear una gran esfera lunar, así que mas nos vale que la nuestra sea muy «a nuestro estilo».

Nuestra luna también debe estar muy presente en el perfil de la ciudad, pero no va a ser amable, al contrario, la intención es mostrarse como amenazante, para que al mirarla nos intranquilice y sirva de aviso sobre el peligro mediombiental que pende sobre nuestras cabezas.

Y es que imaginar la luna, llena de todos los residuos plásticos que no nos caben en la tierra, es una hipótesis no tan distópica… presentimos que los próximos viajes al espacio irán cargados de todo lo que no podemos o no queremos reciclar en estos paises civilizados en los que vivimos.

Para llevarla a cabo partiremos de una gigante bola hecha con una ligera estructura metálica de malla de gallinero. Hemos pensado que ésta se puede crear a partir de los módulos triangulares de una cúpula geodésicas. Cada pieza, por separado, se llenará de residuos plástico de todo tipo cosidos con alambre a la malla. Cuando estén todas las piezas listas se unirán unas a otras con ayuda de una grua hasta formar la buscada forma circular.

La bola, ira protegida por una red que evite que se desprenda ningún envase, e irá suspendida de una gran grúa que elevará esta luna de reciclaje a lo mas alto del cielo de la ciudad.

Estará uniformemente iluminada con focos, que cambiarán de temperatura de color para convertirla en un sol dorado durante las horas diurnas.
