On Blank Pages / En Hojas Blancas (version for canals)

Several months ago, we presented a project specifically designed for the canals of Amsterdam, inspired by our piece “On Blank Pages”, which we have successfully carried out in various cities worldwide, always with formal adaptations to suit the local context. Although this idea will not ultimately be carried out in Amsterdam, we believe it could come to life in any body of water that meets the necessary conditions for its development.

The theme given to us for the proposal was «Legacy,» a concept that raises essential questions: How will we be remembered? Contrasted with: How do we want to be remembered? We see this as a perfect approach to be explored through personal reflections written on blank pages.

The project would begin with the distribution of blank notebooks among neighbors, collectives, and local groups, inviting them to reflect in private on the meaning of «legacy.» Questions such as: What values are worth preserving? What inherited problems could we try to solve? What ideas do we want to pass on to future generations? would serve as a guide to stimulate their contributions.

Each notebook would be personalized with total freedom: writing, drawing, or expressing ideas in any form would be valid, with no rules or worries about doing it «right» or «wrong.» The goal would be to create a free and anonymous space where all voices could be included.

Once completed, the notebooks would be suspended over the water and illuminated to create a visually impactful installation. From afar, they would offer a magical and evocative atmosphere; up close, they would invite passersby to stop, read, and discover the reflections of the community. Walking alongside the water would provide a unique visual and auditory experience: the notebooks, swaying in the wind, would reflect light onto the water, creating a dynamic and ever-changing environment that symbolizes the living and evolving nature of ideas.

The theme of «legacy» aligns perfectly with our proposal, as it would not represent something fixed or rigid but rather something fluid and constantly evolving, like life itself and the water that sustains the installation. The piece would not only aim for visual impact but would also invite reflection on what we want to build and leave for those who come after us.

More than just an aesthetic installation, “On Blank Pages”, as in previous versions that addressed other themes, would serve as a platform for people to share what they consider essential to preserve, what they aspire to change, and what they dream of for the future. By coming together in this space, these private reflections would transform into a powerful collective testimony.

To bring it to life, simple white paper would be used. Depending on the weather conditions, basic recycled paper or a water-resistant and eco-friendly variant could be employed. This paper could be presented as illuminated sheets clipped into place, as we did with our piece «Hojas por Hojas» , or as notebooks illuminated with small internal bulbs or autonomous lights that would be easier to install and provide an intimate yet perfectly perceptible glow.

The final appearance of the installation would always adapt to the setting and the optimization of costs, as is customary in our work. We have considered some initial options, which are reflected in these images, but there are endless possibilities to explore. We even thought about the beauty of leaving the paper completely white so that everyone could imagine what they wanted to write on it.

Hace varios meses presentamos un proyecto diseñado específicamente para los canales de Ámsterdam, inspirado en nuestra pieza “En hojas blancas”, que ya hemos llevado a cabo con éxito en diversas ciudades del mundo, siempre con adaptaciones formales para adaptarla al contexto local. Aunque esta idea finalmente no se llevará a cabo en Ámsterdam, creemos que podría cobrar vida en cualquier espacio de agua que reúna las condiciones necesarias para desarrollarla.

El tema que se nos dio para la propuesta era «El legado», una cuestión que plantea preguntas esenciales: ¿Cómo seremos recordados? contrapuesto a ¿Cómo queremos ser recordados? Nos parece un enfoque perfecto para desarrollarlo a través de reflexiones personales plasmadas en hojas en blanco.

El proyecto comenzaría con la distribución de cuadernos en blanco entre vecinos, colectivos y grupos locales, invitándolos a reflexionar en la intimidad sobre el significado del «legado». Preguntas como: ¿Qué valores merece la pena preservar? ¿Qué problemas heredados podríamos intentar resolver? ¿Qué ideas queremos transmitir a las generaciones futuras? servirían como guía para estimular sus contribuciones.

Cada cuaderno sería personalizado con total libertad: escribir, dibujar o expresar ideas de cualquier forma sería válido, sin reglas ni preocupaciones por hacerlo «bien» o «mal». El objetivo sería crear un espacio libre y anónimo donde todas las voces tuvieran cabida.

Una vez completados, los cuadernos se suspenderían sobre el agua y serían iluminados para formar una instalación visualmente impactante. Desde lejos, ofrecerían una atmósfera mágica y evocadora; de cerca, invitarían a quienes paseen a detenerse, leer y descubrir las reflexiones de la comunidad. Pasear junto al agua permitiría disfrutar de una experiencia visual y sonora única: los cuadernos, movidos por el viento, reflejarían las luces sobre el agua, creando un ambiente dinámico y cambiante que simboliza la naturaleza viva y en evolución de las ideas.

El tema del «legado» se alinea perfectamente con nuestra propuesta, ya que no se trataría de algo fijo ni rígido, sino fluido y en evolución constante, como la vida misma y como el agua que sustenta la instalación. La pieza no solo buscaría un impacto visual, sino que también invitaría a reflexionar sobre lo que queremos construir y dejar para quienes nos sigan.

Más que una instalación estética, “En hojas blancas”, como en anteriores versiones en las que se plantearon otros temas, sería una plataforma para que las personas compartieran lo que consideran esencial preservar, lo que aspirarían a cambiar y lo que soñarían para el futuro. Al unirse en este espacio, estas reflexiones privadas se transformarían en un poderoso testimonio colectivo.

Para materializarla, se utilizaría simple papel blanco. Según las condiciones climáticas, podría emplearse papel reciclado básico o una variante resistente al agua y ecológica. Este papel podría presentarse en forma de folios iluminados sujetos por pinzas, como hicimos en nuestra pieza «Hojas por Hojas», o bien como cuadernos iluminados mediante pequeñas bombillas interiores o luces autónomas que serían más fáciles de instalar y generarían una iluminación íntima pero perfectamente perceptible.

La apariencia final de la instalación siempre se adaptaría al entorno y a la optimización de los costes, como es habitual en nuestro trabajo. Hemos pensado en algunas opciones iniciales que plasmamos en estas imágenes, pero hay infinitas posibilidades que explorar. Incluso hemos pensado en la belleza de dejar el papel completamente blanco para que cada uno imagine lo que quería escribir en él.

Ojalá pronto podamos verla cobrar vida y lucir sobre nuestras cabezas.

On Blank Pages / En Hojas Blancas. Málaga 2024

Last May, we were invited by the City Council of Malaga to carry out a light installation during La Noche en Blanco.

The chosen piece was On Blank Pages, which we have already presented in many cities around the world and which has become one of our favorites, as it allows for real interaction with visitors, who become the true creators of the piece, which is transformed and filled with meaning through their contributions.

The purpose of the piece has remained the same as on previous occasions: to create a large-scale, poetic installation—a wall of free expression where citizens can show their thoughts without censorship, made of light and sound. A large wall covered with thousands of white-sheet notebooks invades the public space and hosts a monumental collage of anonymous and intimate interventions, which the wind moves at random, offering the viewer millions of compositions—the result of collective contributions.

In this case, we used around 2,000 white-sheet notebooks, made from recycled paper, which we illuminated and left on display for visitors and citizens of the city to freely interact with.

Although it is a light-based piece, we couldn’t prevent morning passersby from leaving their messages. We enjoyed the interaction that took place, as many people left notes for their loved ones, which they later photographed and sent via mobile messages and social media, ensuring that their wishes and memories traveled around the world. Let’s not forget that Malaga is one of the cities in Spain with the most international visitors.

And so, such an analog piece, thanks to a digital interaction alien to us, became an improvised communication channel full of messages of affection that traveled far and wide in the virtual universe.

El pasado mes de mayo fuimos invitados por el Ayuntamiento de Málaga para llevar a cabo una pieza de luz durante La Noche en Blanco.

La pieza elegida fue On Blank Pages, que ya hemos realizado en muchas ciudades del mundo y que se ha convertido en una de nuestras favoritas, ya que nos permite una interacción real con los visitantes, quienes se convierten en los verdaderos creadores de la pieza, que va transformándose y llenándose de significado a partir de sus aportaciones.

El propósito de la pieza ha sido el mismo que en las anteriores ocasiones: llevar a cabo una instalación de gran tamaño y carácter poético, un muro de libre expresión donde mostrar los pensamientos de los ciudadanos sin censura, hecho de luz y sonido. Un gran muro cubierto por miles de cuadernos de hojas blancas que invaden el espacio público y alojan un monumental collage de intervenciones anónimas e íntimas que el viento mueve al azar, ofreciendo al espectador millones de composiciones aleatorias, fruto de las aportaciones colectivas.

En este caso, usamos unos 2.000 cuadernos de hojas blancas, hechos con papel reciclado, que iluminamos y dejamos expuestos para que los visitantes y ciudadanos de la ciudad los intervinieran libremente.

Aunque se trata de una pieza de luz, no pudimos evitar que los paseantes mañaneros quisieran dejar sus mensajes, y nos gustó la interacción que se generó en los cuadernos, ya que muchas personas dejaron en ellos mensajes para sus seres queridos, que posteriormente fotografiaron y les hicieron llegar por mensajes de movil y publicándolas en sus redes sociales, logrando así que sus mejores deseos y recuerdos, viajaran por todo el mundo. No olvidemos que Málaga es una de las ciudades de España con más visitantes internacionales.

Y así, una pieza tan tan analógica, gracias a una interacción digital ajena a nosotros, se convirtió en un improvisado canal de comunicación lleno de mensajes de afecto que viajaron a lo largo y ancho del universo virtual.

On Blank Pages / En hojas blancas. Caserta 2024

Last April we were invited to participate in Scuola Futura, an initiative of the Italian Ministero dell’Istruzione e del Merito, on the occasion of World Art Day, to carry out our piece, On Blank Pages.

It was to be installed inside the Regia de Caserta, and of course, it was impossible to resist being part of this monumental setting for a few days.

For 3 days, more than 350 schools from Campania and all over Italy used our wall as a medium to express what they think and expect from their school communities, as well as ideas about training and technological innovation. It also served as a backdrop for artistic activities related to music and dance.

Although it has been a small version of our piece, we believe it has served the purpose for which we created it wonderfully, to be a space for the free expression of ideas, thoughts, and hopes of the future generations of Italy.

Not to mention the pleasure we felt when we saw how well the simplicity of the white paper harmonised with this wonderful baroque palace.

El pasado mes de abril fuimos invitados a participar en Scuola Futura, una iniciativa del Ministero dell’Istruzione e del Merito, de Italia con motivo del Día Mundial del Arte, para llevar a acabo nuestra pieza, On Blank Pages.

Se instalaría en el interior de Regia de Caserta, y claro, fue imposible resistirse a formar parte por unos días de este monumental escenario.

Durante 3 días, más de 350 escuelas de Campania y de toda Italia usaron nuestro muro como soporte para expresar lo que piensan y esperan de sus comunidades escolares, también ideas sobre formación e innovación tecnológica. Además de servir de telón de fondo para llevar a cabo actividades artísticas relacionadas con la música y la danza.

Aunque haya sido una versión pequeña de nuestra pieza, creemos que ha servido maravillosamente para el fin que la creamos, ser un espacio para la libre expresión de ideas, pensamientos, e ilusiones de las futuras generaciones de Italia.

Eso por no hablar del gusto que sentimos al ver lo bien que armonizaba la simplicidad del papel blanco con este maravilloso palacio barroco.

On Blank Pages / En hojas blancas. Durham 2023

Last November we were invited by Artichoke to take part in Lumiere Durham 2023, one of the most prestigious light festivals in the world.

The chosen piece was «On Blank Pages», which we have already carried out in many cities around the world and which has become one of our favorites, as it allows us real interaction with the visitors, who become the creators of the piece, which is transformed and filled with meaning based on their contributions.

The purpose of the piece has been the same as on previous occasions, to carry out a large-scale installation with a poetic character, a wall of free expression where the thoughts of citizens can be shown without censorship, made of light and sound. A large wall covered by thousands of white sheet notebooks that invade the public space and house a monumental collage of anonymous and intimate interventions that the wind moves at random, offering the spectator millions of random compositions, the fruit of collective contributions.

In this case, we used some 2,200 notebooks of white sheets, made with paper derived from cement, which makes it resistant to inclement weather and totally ecological.

The festival proposed that we work on a specific theme, «The judicial system,» and of course, we thought it was most appropriate. Artichoke’s learning and participation teams organized workshops with groups from across the UK, and the participants’ responses also formed part of the installation.

The booklets explored the UK judicial process, the prison system and its impact, as well as current colonial regimes and justice-related issues. In almost all the contributions, there was a common voice, that the system has failed and that power is in the wrong hands.

An online form was also created where anyone could respond to questions about the justice system, an effective way of getting the initiative across the country. The answers were transcribed by hand into notebooks by groups of volunteers.

All this groundwork done with the communities is what gives the piece its true value and makes it unique each time. It never ceases to amaze us what people manage to convey through their writings and drawings; they are extremely generous in their contributions and sincere in their comments.

El pasado mes de noviembre fuimos invitados por Artichoke a formar parte de Lumiere Durham 2023, uno de los más prestigiosos festivales de luz del mundo.

La pieza elegida fue «On Blank Pages», que ya hemos llevado a cabo en muchas ciudades del mundo y que se ha convertido en una de nuestras favoritas, ya que nos permite una interacción real con los visitantes, que se convierten en los verdaderos creadores de la pieza, que va transformándose y llenando de significado a partir de sus aportaciones.

El propósito de la pieza ha sido el mismo que en las anteriores ocasiones, llevar a cabo una instalación de gran tamaño y carácter poético, un muro de libre expresión donde mostrar los pensamientos de los ciudadanos sin censura, hecho de luz y sonido. El festival nos propuso trabajar sobre un tema concreto, «El sistema judicial» y por supuesto nos pareció de lo mas apropiado. Los equipos de aprendizaje y participación de Artichoke organizaron talleres con grupos de todo el Reino Unido y las respuestas de los participantes también formaron parte de la instalación.

Los cuadernos exploraban el proceso judicial del Reino Unido, el sistema penitenciario y su impacto, así como los regímenes coloniales actuales y cuestiones relacionadas con la justicia. En casi todas las aportaciones, había una voz común, que el sistema ha fracasado y que el poder está en las manos equivocadas.

También se creó un formulario online en el que cualquiera podía responder a preguntas sobre el sistema judicial, una manera efectiva de hacer llegar la iniciativa a todo el país. Las respuestas fueron transcritas a mano en los cuadernos por grupos de voluntarios.

Todo este trabajo previo hecho con las comunidades es el que confiere a la pieza su verdadero valor y la hace única en cada ocasión. Nunca deja de sorprendernos lo que la personas logran trasmitir a través de sus escritos y dibujos, son extremadamente generosos es sus aportaciones y sinceros en sus comentarios.

On Blank Pages / En hojas blancas. Times Art Museum, Chengdu 2023

We are still in China presenting our piece On Blank Pages which was already on display at the Beijing Times Art Museum as part of the show Wavelength: A Momentary Spring.

We have arrived now at the Chengdu Times Art Museum for an exhibition that is taking place at the same time as the Biennale which the city is hosting. We will be there from July 15 until October 22.

The composition of the piece is the same as on previous occasions: blank pages and wind. In this case, the new interventions of the visitors will be added to those carried out in Beijing, as they will be put up again on the walls so that they may be read at the new location.

Seguimos en China, con nuestra pieza «En hojas blancas», que ya estuvo instalada en el Times Art Museum Beijing, como parte de la muestra “Wavelength: A Momentary Spring”.

Ahora hemos llegado al Times Art Museum de Chengsu en la exhibición paralela a la Bienal que tiene lugar en la ciudad, y estaremos del 15 de julio al 22 de octubre.

La configuración de la pieza es la misma que en anteriores ocasiones, hojas blancas y viento. En este caso, a las nuevas intervenciones de los visitantes se unirán a las realizadas en Beijing, que se reinstalaran en los muros de modo que puedan ser leídas en la nueva ubicación.
