On Blank Pages / En Hojas Blancas. Málaga 2024

Last May, we were invited by the City Council of Malaga to carry out a light installation during La Noche en Blanco.

The chosen piece was On Blank Pages, which we have already presented in many cities around the world and which has become one of our favorites, as it allows for real interaction with visitors, who become the true creators of the piece, which is transformed and filled with meaning through their contributions.

The purpose of the piece has remained the same as on previous occasions: to create a large-scale, poetic installation—a wall of free expression where citizens can show their thoughts without censorship, made of light and sound. A large wall covered with thousands of white-sheet notebooks invades the public space and hosts a monumental collage of anonymous and intimate interventions, which the wind moves at random, offering the viewer millions of compositions—the result of collective contributions.

In this case, we used around 2,000 white-sheet notebooks, made from recycled paper, which we illuminated and left on display for visitors and citizens of the city to freely interact with.

Although it is a light-based piece, we couldn’t prevent morning passersby from leaving their messages. We enjoyed the interaction that took place, as many people left notes for their loved ones, which they later photographed and sent via mobile messages and social media, ensuring that their wishes and memories traveled around the world. Let’s not forget that Malaga is one of the cities in Spain with the most international visitors.

And so, such an analog piece, thanks to a digital interaction alien to us, became an improvised communication channel full of messages of affection that traveled far and wide in the virtual universe.

El pasado mes de mayo fuimos invitados por el Ayuntamiento de Málaga para llevar a cabo una pieza de luz durante La Noche en Blanco.

La pieza elegida fue On Blank Pages, que ya hemos realizado en muchas ciudades del mundo y que se ha convertido en una de nuestras favoritas, ya que nos permite una interacción real con los visitantes, quienes se convierten en los verdaderos creadores de la pieza, que va transformándose y llenándose de significado a partir de sus aportaciones.

El propósito de la pieza ha sido el mismo que en las anteriores ocasiones: llevar a cabo una instalación de gran tamaño y carácter poético, un muro de libre expresión donde mostrar los pensamientos de los ciudadanos sin censura, hecho de luz y sonido. Un gran muro cubierto por miles de cuadernos de hojas blancas que invaden el espacio público y alojan un monumental collage de intervenciones anónimas e íntimas que el viento mueve al azar, ofreciendo al espectador millones de composiciones aleatorias, fruto de las aportaciones colectivas.

En este caso, usamos unos 2.000 cuadernos de hojas blancas, hechos con papel reciclado, que iluminamos y dejamos expuestos para que los visitantes y ciudadanos de la ciudad los intervinieran libremente.

Aunque se trata de una pieza de luz, no pudimos evitar que los paseantes mañaneros quisieran dejar sus mensajes, y nos gustó la interacción que se generó en los cuadernos, ya que muchas personas dejaron en ellos mensajes para sus seres queridos, que posteriormente fotografiaron y les hicieron llegar por mensajes de movil y publicándolas en sus redes sociales, logrando así que sus mejores deseos y recuerdos, viajaran por todo el mundo. No olvidemos que Málaga es una de las ciudades de España con más visitantes internacionales.

Y así, una pieza tan tan analógica, gracias a una interacción digital ajena a nosotros, se convirtió en un improvisado canal de comunicación lleno de mensajes de afecto que viajaron a lo largo y ancho del universo virtual.

(Plastic) Full Moon / Luna Llena (de plástico). Brunswick Germany 2024

Last year, we received an invitation to present a project at the Lichtparcours 2024 festival in the German city of Brunswick. It seemed like the ideal setting to develop a piece we envisioned in 2019: (Plastic) Full Moon. Fortunately, the idea appealed to the festival jury, and last June we were finally able to see it materialize.

The piece is based on an assumption that is not so far-fetched: a not-too-distant future in which the inhabitants of Earth look up at the sky and see a different moon. It will no longer be the silver, mysterious sphere that has inspired myths and legends for centuries, but a new celestial body that shines with a dull, multicolored glow, formed by countless fragments of plastic.

For decades, oceans, rivers, and landscapes have been filled with plastic waste, a consequence of excessive consumer culture and a lack of environmental awareness. The crisis has reached such a point that if we don’t stop soon, we may be forced to send the excess plastic into space.

This piece is intended to serve as a luminous reminder of the mistakes we are making. Each night, when looking at this strange spherical artifact, hanging from a massive construction crane, reflecting in the waters of a beautiful lake, the city’s inhabitants will be able to reflect on the importance of living sustainably and respecting the environment. It is thus a luminous warning urging us to change our habits before it is too late.

To carry it out, thousands of pieces of recycled plastics were assembled, forming a large spherical structure made with metal segments. The plastics were donated by the community, and the pieces were sewn together one by one by volunteers, who dedicated much time and effort to cover this immense surface.

Supported by the large crane, which is also part of the piece, its surface reveals the remnants of bottles, bags, toys, and containers, amalgamated into a tapestry that tells the consumption history of a community that, on the other hand, is very careful about recycling its plastic waste.

Every evening, the sight of this strange moon over the lake invites one to think that true progress lies in harmony with nature and in the responsibility of caring for the only home we have: Earth.

We thank the festival organization, the wonderful volunteers who helped us shape the plastic sphere during the 10 days of workshops, the neighbors who donated their plastics daily, the companies and recycling firms that also contributed a large part of the material, the city council, the Kunstverein that provided us with its wonderful space to work, and the sponsors who supported our project.

The Moon will be shining over the lake at Kiryat Tiron Park until early October, from 7 pm to 1 am.

El año pasado, recibimos una invitación para presentar un proyecto en el festival Lichtparcours 2024 en la ciudad alemana de Brunswick. Nos pareció el escenario ideal para desarrollar una pieza que ideamos en el 2019: Luna Llena (de plástico). Afortunadamente, la idea gustó al jurado del festival y el pasado junio finalmente pudimos verla materializada.

La pieza se basa en un supuesto que no es tan descabellado: un futuro no muy lejano en el que los habitantes de la tierra miren al cielo y vean una luna diferente. Ya no será la esfera plateada y misteriosa que ha inspirado mitos y leyendas durante siglos, sino un nuevo astro que brilla con un resplandor opaco y multicolor, formada por innumerables fragmentos de plástico.

Durante décadas, los océanos, ríos y paisajes terrestres se han llenado de desechos plásticos, consecuencia de una cultura de consumo desmedido y una falta de conciencia ambiental. La crisis ha llegado a tal punto que si no paramos pronto quizás nos veamos obligada a enviar el exceso de plástico al espacio.

Esta pieza se ha pensado para servir como recordatorio lumínico, de los errores que estamos cometiendo. Cada noche, al mirar este extraño artefacto esférico, colgado de una inmensa grúa de construcción, reflejándose en las aguas de un hermoso lago, los habitantes de la ciudad podrán reflexionar sobre la importancia de vivir de manera sostenible y respetar el medio ambiente. Es pues una advertencia luminosa que insta a cambiar nuestros hábitos antes de que sea demasiado tarde.

Para llevarla a cabo, se han ensamblado miles de piezas de plásticos reciclados, conformando una gran estructura esférica hecha con segmentos de metal. Los plásticos fueron donados por la comunidad y las piezas fueron cosidas una a una por voluntarios, que han dedicado mucho tiempo y esfuerzo para cubrir esta inmensa superficie.

Sostenida por la gran grúa que también forma parte de la pieza, su superficie revela los restos de botellas, bolsas, juguetes y envases, amalgamados en un tapiz que narra la historia del consumo de una comunidad que, por otro lado, hay que decir que es muy cuidadosa con el reciclaje de sus residuos plásticos.

Cada anochecer, la vista de esta extraña luna sobre el lago invita a pensar que el verdadero progreso radica en la armonía con la naturaleza y en la responsabilidad de cuidar el único hogar que tenemos: la Tierra.

Queremos dar las gracias a la organización del festival, a los maravillosos voluntarios que nos ayudaron a dar forma plástica a la esfera, durante los 10 días que duraron los talleres, a los vecinos que nos donaron diariamente sus plásticos, a las empresas y compañías de reciclaje que también aportaron gran parte del material, al ayuntamiento, al Kunstverein que nos brindó su maravilloso espacio para trabajar y a los patrocinadores, que apostaron por nuestro proyecto.

Un agradecimiento especial a Kadriye por su inestimable ayuda logística y, por supuesto, a Melisa Hernández por las maravillosas fotos.

La Luna estará luciendo sobre el lago del Kiryat Tiron Park hasta principios de octubre, en horario de 7 pm a 1 am.

On Blank Pages / En hojas blancas. Caserta 2024

Last April we were invited to participate in Scuola Futura, an initiative of the Italian Ministero dell’Istruzione e del Merito, on the occasion of World Art Day, to carry out our piece, On Blank Pages.

It was to be installed inside the Regia de Caserta, and of course, it was impossible to resist being part of this monumental setting for a few days.

For 3 days, more than 350 schools from Campania and all over Italy used our wall as a medium to express what they think and expect from their school communities, as well as ideas about training and technological innovation. It also served as a backdrop for artistic activities related to music and dance.

Although it has been a small version of our piece, we believe it has served the purpose for which we created it wonderfully, to be a space for the free expression of ideas, thoughts, and hopes of the future generations of Italy.

Not to mention the pleasure we felt when we saw how well the simplicity of the white paper harmonised with this wonderful baroque palace.

El pasado mes de abril fuimos invitados a participar en Scuola Futura, una iniciativa del Ministero dell’Istruzione e del Merito, de Italia con motivo del Día Mundial del Arte, para llevar a acabo nuestra pieza, On Blank Pages.

Se instalaría en el interior de Regia de Caserta, y claro, fue imposible resistirse a formar parte por unos días de este monumental escenario.

Durante 3 días, más de 350 escuelas de Campania y de toda Italia usaron nuestro muro como soporte para expresar lo que piensan y esperan de sus comunidades escolares, también ideas sobre formación e innovación tecnológica. Además de servir de telón de fondo para llevar a cabo actividades artísticas relacionadas con la música y la danza.

Aunque haya sido una versión pequeña de nuestra pieza, creemos que ha servido maravillosamente para el fin que la creamos, ser un espacio para la libre expresión de ideas, pensamientos, e ilusiones de las futuras generaciones de Italia.

Eso por no hablar del gusto que sentimos al ver lo bien que armonizaba la simplicidad del papel blanco con este maravilloso palacio barroco.

Gracias al Ministero dell’Istruzione e del Merito, y al Istituto Tecnico Agrario “Emilio Sereni” por pensar en nosotros. A los estudiantes y profesores por usar la pieza y a Noir Studio por las fotos.

Plastic Gusts that Occupy the Air / Ráfagas de plástico que ocupan el aire

«We continue to work on ideas that, in addition to being aesthetically striking, put in the spotlight and in the public debate, issues that affect us all.

And among all the causes that we are interested in ‘bringing to light’, the excess of plastic and, in general, exacerbated consumption occupies much of our creative thinking and our daily concern. We all know what we are talking about, so we are not going to talk here about the danger this represents for the planet.

With the piece ‘Plastic Gusts that Occupy the Air’ we want to make visible the physical threat that the excess of plastic exerts on us, occupying our vital space and imposing itself with a threatening presence.

To this end, we will create a large tunnel of wind, light, and air through which visitors will be invited to enter in such a way that they will feel uncomfortably caressed by thousands of strips of recycled plastic, coming close to almost touching us.

This plastic moved by the wind will create a narrow passageway, like a car wash, in which the smell, the look and sound, and the time it takes to go through it, will make us come out a little more restless than when we entered.

To carry out this idea, two backlit white longitudinal structures will be created. Placed parallel, they will occupy a long space of a street or square, blocking its traffic.

The strips that form the piece will be created from all the plastic obtained from local consumption, which we will meticulously cut to form strips of exact width and length and which we will tie to a grid of the same size as the structures of the passageway to which it will be attached.

Inside the structures that form the light corridor will be housed the cold light bulbs and fans in charge of moving the plastic. The walls of the structure will be made of white micro-perforated canvas, which will allow light and air to escape from the interior.

It seems to us a simple way to get an uncomfortable feeling that causes that for a while we can not get out of our head the amount of space that occupies the plastic in our lives.

Seguimos trabajando en ideas que además de ser estéticamente impactantes, pongan en el punto de mira y en el debate público, temas que nos afectan a todos.
Y entre todas las causas que nos interesa «sacar a la luz» el exceso de plástico y en general el consumo exacerbado ocupa gran parte de nuestro pensamiento creativo y de nuestra preocupación diaria. Todos sabemos de lo que estamos hablando, por lo que no vamos a hablar aquí del peligro que esto representa para el planeta.

Con la pieza «Ráfagas de plástico que ocupan el aire» queremos visibilidad la amenaza física que el exceso de plástico ejerce sobre nosotros ocupando nuestro espacio vital e imponiéndose con una presencia amenazadora.

Para ello crearemos un gran túnel de viento, luz y aire por el que se invitará a los visitantes a internarse de manera que se sientan incómodamente acariciados por miles de tiras de plástico reciclado, acercándose hasta casi tocarnos.

Este plástico movido por el viento creara un estrecho pasadizo, a modo de túnel de lavado, y en el que el olor, el aspecto y el sonido y el tiempo que se tarde en recorrerlo, propicie que salgamos un poco mas inquietos que cuando entramos.

Para llevarlo a cabo esta idea, se crearán dos estructuras longitudinales blancas retroiluminada. Colocadas paralelas ocuparán un largo espacio de una calle o plaza, bloqueando su tráfico.

Las tiras que forman la pieza serán creadas a partir de todo el plástico conseguido del consumo local, que cortaremos meticulosamente para forma tiras de exacta anchura y longitud y que ataremos a una retícula del mismo tamaño que las estructuras del pasadizo a las que se fijará.

Dentro de las estructuras que forman el pasillo de luz estarán alojados los focos de luz fría y ventiladores encargados de mover el plástico. Las paredes de la estructura serán de lona blanca microperforada, lo que permitirá que salga la luz y el aire del interior.

Nos parece una manera sencilla de conseguir una incomoda sensación que provoque que durante un rato no podamos apartar de nuestra cabeza la cantidad de espacio que ocupa el plástico en nuestra vida.

When there are no more leaves / Cuando no queden hojas

One of our recurring concerns is the possibility that the natural world will disappear, giving way to a spectacular imitation tailored to the whimsical tastes and needs of “civilized man.”

It is true that nature has been shaped over the centuries to meet humanity’s ever-growing demands. Large populations have claimed space within it, and it has been manipulated to increase efficiency and feed an overpopulated world.

However, what is happening today is not justified for the benefit of humankind, but rather driven by the selfishness of a privileged society that thinks only of its own interests. This society is incapable of looking toward a future that does not belong to it, and to which it is denying survival.

As trees disappear, the earth warms, glaciers melt, and water becomes scarce, the few remaining natural environments are transformed into sets designed with creativity and technology. The goal is to cater to the taste of an increasingly infantilized consumer, who pays to experience a reality artificially created.

In this way, the natural becomes a carefully produced spectacle, for which we pay an admission fee to enjoy it without having to worry about adverse conditions or seasonality.

Our proposal for the piece When There Are No Leaves Left begins with a bare or leafless tree, which we will protect with a white canvas structure, illuminated and surrounded by fans.

We will fill this structure with thousands of tree leaves—either natural ones collected from those that have fallen from the tree itself, or ones drawn on paper by neighbors and visitors.

These “leaves” will be moved by the wind produced by the fans. This effect will create swirls of fabricated leaves spinning around the bare tree.

This installation is a metaphor for how we prefer to eliminate the natural and then recreate it artificially, with greater spectacle and restricted access.

We hope to be able to bring this idea to life very soon.

Una de nuestras inquietudes recurrentes es la posibilidad de que lo natural desaparezca para dar paso a una imitación espectacular, adaptada a los gustos y necesidades caprichosas del «hombre civilizado».

Es cierto que la naturaleza ha sido moldeada a lo largo de los siglos para satisfacer las demandas cada vez más crecientes de la humanidad. Grandes poblaciones han requerido su espacio en ella, y se la ha manipulado para aumentar su eficiencia y alimentar a un mundo superpoblado.

Sin embargo, lo que está ocurriendo actualmente no se justifica en beneficio de la humanidad, sino que es impulsado por el egoísmo de una sociedad privilegiada que solo piensa en sus propios intereses. Esta sociedad es incapaz de mirar hacia un futuro que no le pertenece y al que está negando su supervivencia.

Mientras los árboles desaparecen, la tierra se calienta, los glaciares se derriten y el agua escasea, los escasos entornos naturales se transforman en decorados diseñados con creatividad y tecnología. Con el fin adaptarse al gusto de un consumidor cada vez más infantilizado, que paga por experimentar una realidad artificialmente creada.

De este modo, lo natural se convierte en un espectáculo cuidadosamente producido, por el que pagamos una entrada para disfrutarlo, sin tener que preocuparnos por las condiciones adversas o por la estacionalidad.

Nuestra propuesta para la pieza «Cuando no queden hojas» comienza con un árbol seco o sin hojas, que protegeremos con una estructura de lona blanca, iluminada y rodeada de ventiladores.

Llenaremos esta estructura con miles de hojas de árboles. que pueden ser naturales recolectadas de las propias que han caído del árbol, o tambien dibujadas en papel por vecionos y visitantes,

Estas «hojas» serán movidas por el viento que producen los ventiladores. Este efecto creará remolinos de hojas impostadas, que giraran alrededor del árbol desnudo.

Esta instalación es una metáfora de cómo preferimos eliminar lo natural para luego recrearlo de manera artificial, con más espectacularidad y acceso restringido.

Esperamos poder llevar a cabo esta idea muy pronto.
